There is zero dilemma. If and when Mayer is ready to play SS, they guy there can be moves to 2B, 3B or traded.

I think the real dilemma Larry is raising is about retaining Bogey.

But, Mayer has nothing or very little to do with that choice. You move Bogey to another position (3B, if Devers is gone) or trade Bogey, Story or Mayer, if a logjam ever occurs.

Or move Raffy to first base.

Somehow I don't think a dream infield of Devers, Story, Mayer and Bogaerts is a possibility in the real world though.

No, because this IF would mean trading the Messiah Casas.

what hang’em Chaim does this offseason for the 2023 season at short stop has consequences down the road. How he solves this dilemma will have a huge impact on our organization for years to come.

I’m not sure moving athletes to other positions or trying to work a trade is an ideal or practical solution.

But the other side of the coin is there is no guarantee that Mayer ever develops into a major leaguer.

Mayer is too far away, and Bogey will be ready for a position change when he is ready.

Bryan Mata has not gotten much talk coming back from surgery.

He was ranked pretty highly a couple years ago and has almost 70 IP, so far, with these numbers:

.576 OPS Against

2.23 ERA

81 Ks

The 38 BBs is concerning, however, but the WHIP is a respectable 1.24.

Although soxprospects has him ranked 7th, they don't seem to think too kindly of him in their summation:

Projects as a back end starter or multi-inning relief arm with premium stuff to handle a late inning role if necessary. Ceiling of a mid-rotation starter. Still has a wide range of outcomes as he makes his return from Tommy John surgery. Raw stuff is back, but feel for secondaries and command come and go within outings. Might be able to start, but could be more effective in shorter bursts out of the bullpen. Delivery still has effort and we need to see how his stuff holds up over longer, 5-6-inning stints and when pitching on a consistent starter’s schedule. Will show the potential for a true four-pitch mix with two potential plus offerings. Has shown the ability to miss bats with all four pitches at various points in his career. Harnessing command of his arsenal will be key for his development. Injury risk had become a concern even pre-Tommy John surgery, as he last made it through a full season healthy in 2017. Tommy John Surgery in April 2021 clouds future starter profile.

Yorke with his 11th tater of the season.

Injuries really took a toll in this guy's season. I hope he can turn it around next year. Unfortunately, he already had the injury knock on him as a highschooler.

I haven't been paying as much attention to the MiLB lately, but since heading to Salem, draftee Chase Meidroth has a 980 OPS, 3 HR, 12 BB, 6 K in 17 games. He's not a power guy, but his noted bat to ball skills are showing up in A ball and he's still just flat out walking a ton. He'll probably keep walking a shitload until he gets to AA at some point.

From soxprospects,com...

The Red Sox completed their trade with the White Sox where they acquired catcher Reese McGuire for a PTBNL and left-hander Jake Diekman. Taylor Broadway has been announced as the player to be named. Broadway is a 26-year-old right-handed reliever who made 40 appearances in the White Sox system this year. A majority of that came in Double-A, where he posted a 4.74 ERA in 49 1/3 innings. His strikeouts numbers were extremely impressive, punching out 74 hitters with just 14 walks. He was taken in the sixth round by Chicago last year out of Mississippi and has reported to the Sea Dogs.

Way too short of a sample size, but catchers are notorious for developing late, and McGuire has the D to be a big league catcher.

This Broadway kid looks like he could have the stuff to be a bullpen stud if everything breaks right.

Would be assume This turned out to be like the heathclifd slocumb trade 2.0

Dalbec and Seabold are sure making a case for being career AAAA players.

Abreu walked for his 105th time, tonight (3 BBs). Kavadas #99.

Hamilton stole his 64th base.

Drohan moving up the charts: 5 IP 3H 1ER 3BB 3K

Bonaci now has 89 BBs & 87 Ks.

Romero went 2-5 (.959)

Meidroth 1-5 (.955)

Wikelman 5 IP 3H 1ER 1BB 4K (2.65 ERA) should be in POR, next season.

Ward had a good night: 5IP 4H 0ER 2BB 5K (2.43 ERA)

Abreu walked again! I think that's 105 or 106 on the season (2 Hits, too)

Kavadas 3Ks (0-4) down to .723 in AA

Mayer's HR and 2-4 brought him to .753, so far.

Binelas and Wilson with their 11th Portland taters in the season!

Binelas has hit in 6 of the last 7 games after being absolutely atrocious in AA. (8 H, 5 2B, 1 HR, 2BB, 6 K)
