Wong and RHern have been basically alternating playing catcher and DH at Woo.

Both are around .750-.775. Wong went 1-3 w BB (.777), while RHern went 2-4 w HR (.756.) Almonte walked twice and went 1-2 w a 2b. Casas went 1-4 in today's loss. Keller 6IP 4H 3ER 3BB 2K, German 1 IP 0H oER 0BB 1K.

Greenville won 9-4. Ferguson went 2-4 w HR and 3RBI. Jimenez is waking up a bit (2.4.) Sikes walked 3 times, scored twice and got an rbi, all without a hit. Hickey got another walk and a rare K.

At Portland, the amazing Kavadas went zero for one.

But got hit twice, not once, by pitches. And wait for it…… yes, that’s right………. totally amazing….. he got another walk today.

Despite not getting a hit, he was on base 3 times today. The man is an on base machine.

My only concern about Kavadas is he doesn’t really have a defensive home, his defense is below average anywhere, reportedly.

I have a hard time believing a non obese young man can’t learn to play at least an average 1B or LF but I know very little of such things.

If you can hit, you can find your way on an MLB team, so Kavadas might have a fine MLB career in front of him, but not having a defensive home puts a ton of pressure on his bat. He HAS to hit.

Our next DH?

Our next DH?

There used to be an old scouting phrase that went something like:

You can shake a tree and dozens of guys that are good with the glove fall out!

Yet regardless of what tree you shake, guys that can hit almost never fall out!

If Kavadas can hit, all 30 teams will fall a spot for him.

My only labeling a young prospect as the "next DH" is that he is a guy who HAS to hit. The bar for offensive production is set so much higher, It also takes away from being able to rotate and rest guys, which is fine when your DH is David Ortiz.....but then again Ortiz could HIT. I like Kavadas, and think he could be great, but the bar is set high for him. He could be a nice trade piece too, would like to see him develop into at least and average defending 1B.

Indeed. he has to prove he can hit at higher levels, before he even gets a MLB look.

His .295 BA may not transfer well to the bigs, but so far, he looks like he can hit and is not all about walks, despite Larry's emphasis on BBs.

24 HRs in 322 ABs shows he might make in the bigs, even if his BA drops significantly.

If he can keep his OBP over .340 (It's .460, now) and hit over .275, or hit over 30 bombs, or hit .250 with 25+ bombs, he can be a good DH in MLB.

It's a long way away. Maybe he can play 1B, too.

DH only profile

I guess he's probably too small to play 1B, but from what I've heard about his defense, maybe DH is his only realistic ML landing spot.

I wonder what team has an open DH slot, next season.

Murphy got shelled at AAA. (3Ip 7 ER)

Casas is a homer short of a cycle and may get up in the 9th.

Koss is 3 for 4 in AA.

Hickey's 4th HR at A+ was a 3-run job.

In A ball, Simas went 3-4, Miller & Meredith 2-4. Paulino 2-5 w a 2B.

Report from Portland, 8/24/22: The Sea Dogs got crushed by the Yard Goats, but shortstop Christian Koss shined in defeat. Batting clean-up, Koss had three hits and drove in two runs, but impressed most in the last inning, with a head-first hustle double on a liner over second.

Note to all Renfroe trade haters -- hopefully, by now, after the Sox cut Bradley, you understand that JBJ was only included in the deal so Bloom could receive two actual prospects from the Brewers. Last night I saw them in person.

David Hamilton, the Sea Dogs' starting second baseman, led off, singled, walked and scored twice, and stole two more bags - second and third easily; he now has 56 stolen bases in 100 games this year.

Alex Binelas, the Sea Dogs' starting third baseman, launched the most awe-inspiring home run (we've seen live in five pro ballparks this summer): a rising rocket to right-center that left the premises in a heartbeat, a reported 420 feet missile... to anyone who's ever been to Portland, 20 more feet to the left and the ball would've killed the big dumb blue bug that sits atop the roof of Hadlock Field.

I'm not saying either of these guys are locks to make the majors, but each has one bonafide skill that can help a big league club...

Unfortunately, Boston doesn't appear to have anyone in Double A that is can't-miss like Rockies' outfielder Zac Veen or even shortstop Julio Carreras, who both just got promoted from A ball, had three hits each and flew around the bases. Veen is tall, skinny, and loving life as a pro at age 20 -- every time he took another extra base (twice on line doubles, once on a steal), he jumped up, whooped and smiled at his coach and the crowd. Before the game, Veen posed with fans for pics and even thanked the kids that asked him for autographs. He was the first high schooler picked in the 2020 draft, 9th overall... which should give some hope to Sox fans already looking ahead to the '23 draft.

Thanks for the eye test report.

Only time will tell. These two both seem to have some holes in their games to repair before making it to the bigs, but neither is too old for their level or seem destined to be AAAA players, despite the lies one Yankee posters keeps spouting about Binelas.

Seabold continued his downward slide, last night. 5IP 6H 4ER 2BB 4K while Connor Wong (3-5) continues making his case for a legit shot at winning the back-up catcher slot in 2023. I'm pretty sure, he'll be a September call-up. Stewart his the most quiet 19th HR in the system. Nobody ever talks about him.

Portland won 8-0, and Mata is really impressing me. 6IP 5H 0ER 2BB 9K His ERA is now 1.85 on the farm. 2023 ready? Rafaela went 2-5 w a 3B to improve his AA OPS to .839. Recently acquired Wilyer Abreu also went 2-5, but Potts did most of the damage going 2-4 w a HR and 5 rbi. Story went 0-1 w a SF & rbi.

Lugo continued mashing w GRE. I think this was his 5th HR in 4 games. Hickey went 2-3 with a BB. (57 BB & 63 Ks in 216 ABs). Rosier and Ferguson walked twice, each.

Bonaci went 3-5 with Salem. He has 80 BB and 80 Ks on the season and had none of either, last night.

Santos is off to an awesome start, tonight with WOO.

5 IP

1 H

1 BB

9 Ks

Wong is still on fire: 1-3 with his 11th dinger. (I'll let Larry call it a "tater.") Castellenos has one, too. Casas is currently 2-3

Posted

GRE saw a couple nice feats:

Yorke hit his 10th dinger.

Wikelman went 4 shutout innings with 3 hits, 1 BB and 5 Ks. (His A+ ERA is now 3.38.)

Posted

At Portland, Wilson with his 9th tater of the season.

Northcut with his 3rd Portland tater of the season.

Story with his 1st Portland tater of the season.
