Red Sox trade Hunter Renfroe in trade involving Jackie Bradley Jr

Maybe so. But given the litigious nature of both agents and owners, I am still skeptical.

If they were talking against some sort of legal agreement, it would hardly be the first time. They’ve all skirted around the rules to gain advantages in the past…

It seems obvious, to me, it happens.

How many times do players sign the first day of allowable signings? Did the agent really not talk to other teams while the player was still legally under contract to the player's previous club?

Could be.

There aren't really any encouraging signs, right now.

Don't expect anything at all until January, and it doesn't look good even then.

Probably February things start heating up.

Nearly three weeks ago MLB Network insider Jon Heyman reported that "nearly every West Coast team is in on the Japanese star."

MLB.com is keeping track of all the latest news and rumors surrounding Japanese outfielder Seiya Suzuki, who is available to Major League Baseball clubs via the posting process.

The Mets were the only East Coast team mentioned in that Seiya Suzuki roundup posted at MLB.com on December 1.

Heyman is the least reliable source in the business.

There's no incentive to getting anything done until February. They are going to drag this process out for a while. I'm not sure it will impact Opening Day. I would guess that offseason begins again around 2/15.

MLB proposed an NBA-style lottery with lowest 3 teams. Players want lowest 8 teams.

Seems like some sort of lottery system for the draft will be put into place. I'm fine with it being somewhere from 3 - 8 teams in a lottery. I just don't want it to be a lottery like the NBA where every non playoff team gets a chance for a high pick. I really don't see a big issue with the current practice though.

And I'm hearing that the MLB Rule 5 draft is expected to take place soon after whenever the lockout ends/new CBA is agreed to. So two Rule 5 drafts, one offseason. Here we go.

Makes sense.

On the other hand, the only way to prevent tanking for draft position is to use a lottery and I would favor putting all 32 (or so!) teams in there: you can weight their chances however you want (32 balls for the last place team, 31 for the next .... 1 for the first? or all the same). There's nothing quite so annoying as teams in the NBA scrambling to avoid the playoffs or to drop to last place. Teams should not be rewarded for failure.

I've heard from multiple sources that the initial error was calling it "cancelled" when it was truly just "postponed."

I don't believe the problem is as rampant in MLB. The teams that are at the bottom are trying to rebuild, but it's hardly ever going to be turned around by one draft selection. I don't think MLB's draft is comparable to NBA or NFL. Picks are almost always years away from helping a team. The difference in pick #1 and pick #2 is usually miniscule. With NBA and NFL, there are typically standout players that teams are trying to actually tank for. In MLB, teams are tanking to save money, not to acquire a certain pick in the draft.

Heyman is the least reliable source in the business.

Less reliable than Sean McAdams' unidentified "one major league source" who reportedly said the Yankees, Blue Jays and Red Sox were the most aggressive suitors for Seiya Suzuki?

https://www.bostonsportsjournal.com/2021/12/04/making-sense-of-flurry-of-sox-moves-before-lockout

As of December 9 the market reportedly had not narrowed:

https://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2021/12/9/22825267/mlb-free-agent-seiya-suzuki-powerful-outfielder-japan-high-demand

Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto is a rare source who has spoken on the record, saying the Mariners met with Suzuki via Zoom:

SEATTLE -- Beyond introducing his new ace in front of the bright lights and finalizing a four-year contract extension with a promising reliever on Wednesday, Jerry Dipoto held court with reporters at T-Mobile Park to discuss a variety of topics ahead of the 8:59 p.m. PT expiration of the Collective

The tone of the quote was not optimistic but this would not be the first time the Mariners landed a premier 27-year-old outfielder named Suzuki coming off nine stellar seasons in Japan.

Who is?

Those in the industry whose predictions sometimes come true. Today's bowtie is cut by Chris Sale scissors in dishonor of the knights (and daze) of the keypads... because anyone is gooder than us.

That's certainly true. And it wasn't baseball that caused my antipathy toward the whole system. The money-saving tank might be addressed in the new CBA, no?

The ones who said the Rule 5 Draft was "cancelled," instead of postponed.

Did they say that out did they report MLB saying it?

MLB Trade Rumors doesn't break news. They are just a news aggregator. They are only as reliable as whatever tweet they are getting their info from.

No mention of West Coast teams involved.

Hmmm....

And no new news on the Red Sox, Yankees and Blue Jays (only a link to the old anonymous speculation).

I heard from reliable sources the Red Sox are interested.

Does reliable actually mean liable to be libel, over and over again? Or to lie once more?
