Red Sox trade Hunter Renfroe in trade involving Jackie Bradley Jr

Yes, certainly there is a significant chance he ends up as a net plus, even if his defense may slip a little as he ages.

The question is, what does he have to hit to break even (or out net Renfroe?)

.625?

.650?

.675?

.700?

It's a good question.

2018 OPS .717 fWAR 2.8

2019 OPS .738 fWAR 1.4

Obviously his defensive numbers were much better in 2018.

His defensive numbers were much better in 2021 than they were in 2019 BTW.

A 2022 OPS of .700 should result in an fWAR of 1 to 1.5 depending on the D.

So, maybe .660 to break even and .700 to be a nice plus?

There were a couple points that do make me disagree with this.

1. The team defense last year was, to be kind, subpar. Bradley absolutely helps there.

2. Bradley had an insanely low BABIP relative to his batted ball profile. His line drive rate was one of the best of his career, for example. There was evidence of a lot of bad luck on his part…

Both good points.

I still believe that the deal was about the prospects, obviously with the hope that JBJ would improve the defense (which he will) and that he would bounce back from last year (which he very probably will).

If you take the prospects out of the deal, would the Sox have made the trade? I'm thinking not a chance.

Hamilton and Binelas are both off to great starts in very limited sample sizes.

Good to hear. Of course, it's far too early to know if they will amount to anything.

The more prospects you acquire, the better chance you have that some will make a significant impact to the team.

Yes. This can be a win-win. The idea that Bradley has no potential value is kind of absurd.

Just to clarify, I am not suggesting that Bradley has no potential value.

The more I think about this deal, the better I realize it was.

I mean, we dealt a player who was non-tendered by a small market team that didn’t want to pay him $3mil. In return we received a player than another small market team did want to pay $36 mill over 3 years. And they included prospects.

As fans, sometimes we get a better idea when we remember the last season isn’t the only season…

Maybe they saw it as 6M for JBJ and 6M for the prospects?

It’s possible the prospects were thrown in to entice the Sox to take the entirety of Bradley’s contract.

If this deal was all about the prospects, why did Bloom settle for two guys ranked so unimpressively in Milwaukee’s farm? Undervalued or not, these are not prospects you take on a $12mill AAV multi year contract to acquire…

Like you, the more I thought about it, the more I liked the deal. Yes, the recency effect often does play a big part in our reactions.

It's possible, but I don't think the prospects were throw ins. I think getting the prospects was the impetus of the trade.

JBJ will have a considerably better year than he had with the Brew Crew.

Hard not to improve on historical lows.

As of today he is batting .222, which is almost 60 points better than last year.

We should extend him now, before he reaches .245!

Bloom drawing align in the sand:

"it was fairly clear early on that we weren't going to align. If we were seeing the world exactly the same, we would've aligned. But those guys are still here, and we didn't find that alignment this time..."

And the other prospect, David Hamilton off to a great start. 2 homers, 8 RBI, 12 steals and .387 average. At Portland. This trade looks like a win for the Sox at this point.

Bloom's moves so far are looking very good. I like what I have seen. Obviously it is too early to make any kind of major judgement call on him but he has an eye for good talent. You can't keep them all though and when and if the big trades do come the judgements will come flooding in then.

He swung and missed a bit, last winter.
