I saw a news story the other day where someone stated their neighbor was 2 acres away. The was unacceptable to me.

An acre as a unit of area can also be used as a unit of distance if you assume a square acre, but yeah, it's ambiguous. It could be a long acre, it could be a tall acre.

So after previewing the various Red Sox off-season plans from a variety of talking heads aound the Internet, here is what I have learned.

C: Vazquez - universally determined to be returning. So we should probably bid him adieu.

1B: The Sox are going to re-sign Schwarber. Or not, as he will clearly be testing the market and the Sox are satisified with Dalbec and his second half. Except that they view it as fluky.

2B: Everyone agrees Arroyo is too fragile. Will it be Kike or Iglesias or another?

3B: Devers. And here I agree.

SS: Bogaerts. The sox will deal with his inevitable opt out after the season. Again, I can see that.

LF: Verdugo.

CF: Kike or Duran, assuming Kike moves to 2B.

RF: Renfroe

DH: JD, although there is no consensus at all about whether or not he opts out. Apparently he either definitely is or definitely isn't. It's all very educational.

I hope that clarifies this for everyone...

No. That's wrong. Even in Canada...

What do you mean? We do it with Yards all the time in the US, and Canada isn't as Metric only as they pretend to be because they have to do business with Americans every now and then

An acre is a measurement of area, not distance. The guy might as well have said the neighbor was 2,500 gallons away...

In Canada we use a hilarious mishmash of the metric, Imperial and American systems.

No one ever does that right.

I have a pet peeve with scales that display your weight in both pounds and kilograms. Those two units do NOT measure the same thing...

Sir notin, Dojji would prefer all measurements be taken in the standard Che-Hsuan Lin. Lins can be expressed in one dimensional, two dimensional and three dimensional units. It's truly a blessing.

Go ahead and explain, Professor. I need the enlightenment.

You're trying to argue with a guy who definitively said all metric heights should be expressed in either Angstroms or hectometers...

Now what are you talking about?

A kilogram of marijuana equals about 2.2 pounds of marijuana. Same weight, differently expressed.

I think notin is referring to his HS Physics class.

i think he's being technical about the difference between mass and weight.

A kilogram is a measure of mass. A pound is a measure of force.

Mass is the amount of matter you have, but force is a measure of push or pull one object has on another, and, according to Isaaac Newton, is measured by the expression F=ma or "Force = Mass times acceleration". Weight is a force that needs to fit that expression.

To make it worse, some dope somewhere conceived of the "kilogram-force" and somehow made it so it does not fit into F=ma.

I was right tho.

And like I said, it's a pet peeve of mine.

I know a lot of people like to live in ignorance about this kind of thing...

and bear in mind, being "too technical" with me is an occupational hazard. If you think kilograms vs pounds is too much, then you will probably lose it if you ever realize where the "25,689 acres away" comment came from. (Hint: It's actually based on you living near Tampa and that all acres are square acres.)

I live approximately 168,100 Che-Hsuan Lins away from Tropicana Field.

Google refuses to help me convert Che-Hsuan Lins to acres. Just another flaw with Google...

I think there's 3,600 Lins per acre.

Since notin has been floating lots of A's trades lately:

Bob Melvin was hired by the Padres today.

As to why the Athletics would allow such a successful manager to leave, Bob Nightengale of USA Today suggests a financial motive. He reports that Melvin was making “about 4MM a year” and that the club intends to slash payroll for 2022. MLBTR’s Steve Adams recently looked into the fact that the club has a tremendous arbitration class this winter that will push the organization into uncomfortable financial territory, and the fact that they are seemingly willing to let a fruitful decade-long partnership with their manager come to end for a few million in cash savings certainly casts an even darker cloud over that situation.

Also:

The Alameda County board of supervisors voted (by a 4-1 margin) Tuesday to join the Athletics and the city of Oakland in the team’s attempts to construct a new ballpark at the Howard Terminal site in Oakland. The county’s agreement is non-binding, and as Annie Sciacca of The Bay Area News Group explains, many steps remain before construction can or would actually begin on a new A’s stadium, or how financing for the development project would break down between the county, city, and the team.
