If Pivetta had been scheduled to start game 2 I suppose Richards would have gone longer than 1 batter last night. I know rest makes a difference for a starter, but except for rare occasions pitchers don’t throw as many pitchers anymore. I think Sale got the start more for his name than anything else.

Sale's ERA this season in 9 starts was 3.16, the lowest on the team, so he is not just a name. That said, he has certainly faded badly in October, I think because he's lost his changeup and is trying to get by on his fastball and slider.

It might make the next couple days itchy for the Rays if the Sox do pull this one fully out and win.

Houck is doing his job, and the big question is how much longer can he go.

Just thinking that Cash might have trouble managing in a city with nutso fns and media. He pulled GS Luplow out in favor of Choi last inning because the Red Sox went from LH to RH pitching. As was said by others, he follows the analytics closely.

New game, and Houck has gone three perfect innings -- so that's ONE time through the order. If my math is right, he can throw three more perfect innings before he gets to THIRD TIME ORDER issues.

The Sox can score at least one more by then and steal this one.

Oh, stop it with Sale and watch the game already!

Oh, you mean like 2 pitch Houck. The difference I see tonight is that Houck's pitches have more movement than Sale's and he kept it low. Vaz must have noticed too.

Both Houck and Sale would be devastating with a change up

Lots and lots of mistake pitches from all but one pitcher tonight so far. Fortunately, he is wearing a Red Sox uni.

True on the stats, but like I said what I saw Sun was all I needed to see. I like Sale, and I know he’s giving it all he’s got, and it’s probably killing him that his results the last two games were as bad as they was. Hopefully he can come back next year, and at least be a serviceable pitcher.
