They’re dumbasses. It’s not like the Sox benefitted from an easy division or anything, lol.

We did get fortunate on the injury front, until COVID protocols hit us hard for a stretch.

What I find amazing is that no established players, except Eovaldi and Renfroe exceeded expectations.

Whitlock pretty much came out of nowhere, but more than these three can be found where one could argue the did not reach 2021 expectations-led by Vaz.

We had 56 players on the active roster, at some point, this year.

We had 19 batters get over 48 PAs, including some real bomb outs like Marwin (.567), Cordero (.497), Santana (.597), Duran (.578), Chavis (.549) and Arauz (.643).

We had 37 players pitch, this year, 21 over 12 IP. We had 18 pitchers with 20+ IP.

Four of our SP'ers with more than 60 IP had these ERAs:

5.22 Richards 22 GS

4.77 Perez 22 GS

4.77 ERod 31 GS

4.56 Pivetta 30 GS

Our pen saw Barnes implode as badly as about anybody ever has.

Out of our top 16 RP'ers by IP (12+), only 3 had a WHIP below 1.350.

Six of those 12 had a WHIP over 1.450.

Yes, MOY. Period.

To throw another name out there: Scott Servais of the Seattle Mariners.

With an Opening Day payroll of $81.8 million, the Mariners finished with 90 wins despite preseason projections of 74 wins*. The M's lost 2020 Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis and 2020 Gold Glove winner Evan White, plus James Paxton and two others from the six-man rotation that opened the season. Seattle finished with a 19-15 record against the AL East but a 9-11 record against the NL West.

With 92 wins the Red Sox exceeded their preseason projection of 85 wins. Despite an Opening Day payroll of $182.5 million, the Sox posted a 15-18 record against the AL West but a 16-4 record against the NL East.

Congratulations to the Red Sox on a successful season.

Compare those numbers to those of the 2021 Seattle Mariners:

https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/SEA/2021.shtml

63 players on the active roster, including 38 pitchers, 21 with at least 22 innings

Baseball writers may be ready to move on from Alex Cora's suspension stemming from the sign-stealing scandal.

Or not.

At the All Star break CBS Sportsline writers voted Cora the Manager of the Year (to that date), surmising that the suspension would not hurt Cora in the ultimate voting. Seattle manager Scott Servais finished third in the midseason voting.

FWIW after the All Star break the Red Sox posted a 37-34 record and the Mariners a 42-29 record.

Cora has been absolutely terrific .The man has a calming soul to him even in the most turbulent times .I appreciate him for. This partly because I’m more of a Hurricane . I do hope we can extend him and Iglesias this winter along with Devers and maybe Xander ?.Been a very memorable summer .Bobby D to me has to be the Redsox comeback player of the year along side Erod in a joint trophy .Cora is our Glue .

Oh, I'm not saying baseball will name Cora MOY. I stopped paying attention to awards long ago.

4 words: Derek Jeter Gold Glove.

Nuff said.

I'll stick with my own beliefs.

And yet, Cora was forced to use all four of those guys in relief in Game #162, because his bullpen was so unreliable and/or exhausted (ironically, in part, because those same four couldn't be trusted to pitch effectively nor go long in most of their starts).

"Playoff" Cora started scrambling over a week ago. And it worked, just barely. Amazingly, the Blue Jays -- who looked stronger than both Boston and New York down the stretch, will be home watching the WC game.

Well, we spent a lot of time talking about how we faded after a great start.

But it was that great first half that gave us just enough of a cushion.

The Jays paid the price for a disappointing first half.

Cora also gets the edge over other skippers by making it to the postseason despite two second-half factors that eroded his cushion: 1) overcoming the Covid crap, losing important players for 10-day quarantines and however many games it took guys to get back in the groove (and don't blame AC for the MLB and union for not mandating player vaccines); 2) surviving the front office decision to not add another arm at the deadline (Robles has contributed, but we've posted for months how another impact reliever or even legit starter that preserves bullpen usage could've helped).

Our PR was bit skewed by non performing money. Price, Pedey and Sale added up to $55M. In a way our PR was not bloated. Just think what we could have done with $30M.

SEA can have the MOY as a consolation prize for another year where they miss the playoffs. An award like that is their version of the World Series. They may even put a banner up for it.

Also, the argument that a manager needs to win the MOY because James Paxton got injured is hilarious. I guess every manager that James Paxton has played with should have one of those in his closet.

I would go with Cash. He always seems to get the most out of his teams and maximizes the strengths of everyone on his roster. Plus I don't think they would allow Cora to win so soon after coming back from suspension, regardless of if he deserves it.

FWIW Alex Cora did not finish among the top four in the AL Manager of Year voting at CBS Sportsline:

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/2021-mlb-awards-picks-juan-soto-edges-bryce-harper-for-nl-mvp-unanimous-selections-for-al-mvp-cy-young/

Tampa Bay's Kevin Cash finished first and Seattle's Scott Servais second.

I'm fine with using the overall team salary--lower is better--as one of the barometers for manager of the year. I also don't mind the voters holding the sign-stealing against Cora. Plus I am usually clueless about the brilliance of lack of it of opposing managers.

But I do know something about what Cora does game to game and will not hesitate to second guess him--and will nevertheless take him over any other manager.

In a more interesting question, Nathan Eovaldi leads all AL pitcher in fWAR. But at 11-9 with a 3.75 ERA, does he get even a single Cy Young vote?

Nathan Eovaldi should get votes.

A first place vote? No.

If Cora doesn't get MOY - and I can certainly see Cash getting it - it won't bother me one bit...

It's probably the most meaningless award of them all.

They generally give it to the guy whose team seemed to 'exceed expectations' the most.
