Looks good to me, but do we know for sure that Pivetta would come out of the rotation?

This is just my take. Stop overanalyzing. (LOL)

Pivetta may start, instead of Houck, and maybe we use Houck as one of our closers.

Next game is an elimination game, and we'll likely see another elimination game in the ALDS, so it's hard to know what roles our pitchers will have in the next week.

I’m not the one over analyzing, but I’m wondering who said Pivetta was going to the pen. If I was over analyzing I’d say Pivetta was going to the pen. We’ve to get to that point first, and beat the Yankees.

I was joking.

I think we know Eovaldi, ERod and Sale are starters. We might not need a 4th starter until game 4 vs TBR. I think Houck & Pivetta are the 2 choices. I guess we could go with the 1st game starter (ERod?) on short rest, if we are down 2-1 in game 4.

Simple thoughts- no overthinking anything.

I was following today’s game on radio and game day. The ebbs and flows were very emotional. The guys on the radio didn’t sound that dissimilar from these game threads over the final 6 games of the season. The team bent but didn’t break and came through on the final weekend in an NL park. They achieved more than I thought they would. I had them pegged for a 4th place team. They were tied for 2nd place but only 1 game better than the 4th place team. So, I wasn’t too far off on that prediction, but I was really off on the win total and the competitiveness. I didn’t think this was a 90 win team when they broke camp. Most of all, I didn’t think they had much of a shot to pull themselves out of the post trading deadline death spiral. My thought was that Erod would have to turn around his season to stop the spiral, but he didn’t do much of a turnaround and they still didn’t collapse. They showed a lot of fortitude. Overall, it was a ton of fun.

It looks like I will have to retire the quotes from Kimmi in my signature. She was right on both counts. And it looks like “the cliff” is a myth after all.

The Sox will compete with the Jays.

The Red Sox will make the playoffs. Book it.

It's called hypothetical thinking.

We do know Pivetta is not starting the Yankee game, so when you commented on us not knowing if Pivetta was going to the pen, that wasn't about the Yankee game.

Everybody is "in the pen" for the Yankee game, except for the starter, Eovaldi, right?

ERod did okay after the deadline:

6-2 3.26 (3.07 FIP) despite the .353 BAbip.

He actually turned it around in mid June.

6.07 ERA in first 13 starts.

3.66 ERA next 18 starts.

Well, that would make prediction correct. I guess overall my predictions weren’t as off as I thought with the exception of win total.

I think ERod's turn-around is the most unnoticed part of the second half of 2021.

He can't bunt but he can win. ERod officially won two of the last three games of the season to lead the staff with 13 Ws. Only four AL hurlers won more.

Sure, victory totals can be overrated for pitchers. But if Cole wins the Cy Young Award, it will be based on his league-leading 16 Ws, because Robbie Ray had better ERA, Ks, WHIP and WAR. Then again, if you value FIP, the top pitcher this year was Nathan Eovaldi...

1st Half: 5.52 ERA, 4.98 K/BB, 1.41 HR/9, 1.37 WHIP, .361 BABIP, 3.37 xFIP

2nd Half: 3.71 ERA, 3.12 K/BB, 0.66 HR/9, 1.41 WHIP, .365 BABIP, 3.52 xFIP

Seems like his 1st half was just really unlucky.

I guess expecting the naysayers to come clean was expecting too much.

Don't pat yourself on the back too hard there old man. I only started the game thread on Friday because even you were down in the dumps and being poopy.

The HR/9 rate drop was very noticeable, but yes, much of the rest looks pretty similar.

These point to more improvement...

OPS Against

.728 2nd half

.793 1st half

If you split the season after his first 14 starts...

3.03 FIP 2nd half

3.67 FIP 1st half

It's one thing to be down n the dumps and poopy than to say things like, "we're done," "we have no chance," "we suck," "we don't deserve to make the playoffs..." (and worse)

No, it's actually the same thing.

Not even close, but I will admit to sounding like a defeatist for a second or two.

I would say everyone is guilty of twisting in the wind, and turning on that so called dime sometime pitch to pitch. It is pretty comical, and is pretty much all the same thing, and I’m sure it will be the status quo on Tuesday. Can’t wait.

Saying outright, "This team sucks," "We have no chance," and worse, not just in one game, but for weeks and months is not the same as several posters feeling down in the dumps in one or two games and sounding like we likely lost our chance.

Yes, we've all had our highs and lows, but there is a wide range on the level of negativity and defeatism.

I'm not claiming I was a believer every second of the season, and I have pointed out I was one of the first to jump ship in 2019, so I'm not trying to claim I'm "holier than thou.]," but I weirdly expected a little more contritions from some posters than I've seen.

Perhaps, I should stop expecting or wishing for the impossible.

It's hard not to, right?

Also, tone and word policing is dumb.

Why do you think you are owed contritions (which isn't even a word)?

You said I hated Cora, and I’m still waiting for you to show me where I said that, or is it exaggerating at its best.

You never said it, but you did and might still want him fired.

Yes, "hate" is a powerful word, so I apologize for using it.

You've roasted him alive, so I'm not sure it was wild exaggeration on my part, but I apologize for making an inference that may not be correct.

When a team goes from 98% playoff odds on 9/23 to 60% a week later, I think you can give a pass to posters complaining that the teams was sucking. In fact, they played like dogshit against the Yanks and struggled against the worst team in their division.

60% is still odds on making it, yet some totally wrote us off.
