Who gets the win? (Isn't this a case to invoke the denial of a win to a guy who pitches "briefly but ineffectively.")

I'd give the win to Valdez. Houck pitched 5 shutout innings, but baseball can be so unfair.

It is strange that the guy who pitched worst and for 1 inning gets the win. On the other hand, we can't go to the same guy every night. We need some others to come back of the IL. It's about time for D-Hern. Every little bit helps.

Looking at the schedule didn’t know we had to head out west this late in the year. 3 with the damn Mariners.

At CWS will be no easier.

I'm just glad I didn't mention before this game that Ottavino hadn't given up a home run all season...

I would have sent Valdez back out for the 9th and sent in Ottavino only if needed. Even though the Sox won, it was costly in bullpen usage. If Valdez gets thru the 9th, Ottavino and Robles get some rest.

The Sox have a somewhat depleted bullpen, but it is anchored by 3 pretty good long relievers: Whitlock, Richards, and Valdez.

The Sox lineup was also hit, but Arauz, of whom I have never been a fan, has come through with hits and--surprise, surprise--highly competent bunts. Yesterday the Sox had three successful bunts in a game for the first time--according to WEEI--since 1993. Sabermetrics can stuff it.

Well, Valdez not pitching the 9th should mean they can use him again sooner than if he did.

Kind of a zero sum game thing there...

Pivetta on Covid list. Ugh

Who goes ? Bullpen day?

Seabold pitched 6 innings yesterday, so he's out.

My guess would be Richards will get the start. He's the best bet to go multiple innings.

Edit - Looks like the Sox called up somebody named Kutter Crawford; he's a starter with Worcester, so I'll assume he's getting the nod. Okay numbers at Portland in 10 games, not so great at Worcester in 6. He's only thrown 75 innings this year so far, but all but one appearance have been starts.

Pivetta has been awful lately. Maybe it’s a good sign idk.

He's only had 2 good starts out of his last 9.

5.91 ERA since July 5th. (.780 OPS against was fed mostly by the 22 BB/HBP in 43 IP, but the 8 HRs didn't help either.)
