Robles is probably one of the dumbest in a box of rocks but he shut down the .167 hitter. Congrats. And there are still 6 more outs to get, how many walks is that, oh and then, there is another game to play today . Better be a complete game win

Cora played this game as if it was a 9 inning game and Houck was about to enter the 7. I f***ing hate how games are managed these days. Too much analyzing

They do not expect Houck to be perfect after 5. Wonder how many pitchers are perfect after five min a regular basis.

yeah, They need to stop this nonsense.

I sit corrected.

You have to admit there is a lot of 20-20 hindsight here though.

Oh I completely agree.

The bullpen has had. A huge load of work this year. Just wish our starters could go longer. Frustrating but it’s always easier to say that at the end of the inning I agree lol.

Regardless. This isn’t looking good for us :(

'Babying' is Cora's middle name.

It's not babying. Houck has repeatedly shown he is ineffective the 3d time through the order.

Whitlock, on the other hand, has shown he is great anytime he goes in and that he can do it for 2 or more innings.

Bringing Taylor in vs. lefty Gallo was also the right move until he walked him;

I would have sent Houck back out there because I thought he was pitching well and because the bullpen has gone sour recently. But I support Cora's decision.

It's a simple fact that, if the bullpen is busted--and it certainly appears to be with Whitlock and Taylor stinking recently, Barnes and Ottavino the same, and Hernandez on the IL--the Sox are in big trouble the rest of the way.

As I said on another thread, the rotation has averaged 4.1 innings per start this year, and the bullpen has been crucial to many of the Sox wins.

The instant 3 up/down puts more pressure on Cora to make the right call but we are down to 3 outs with no life signs present.

The Yanks are 5-3 in their last 8 games and 4-1 in their last 5.

We are 5-3 in our last 8 games and 4-1 in our last 5.

To be fair we beat Baltimore lmao.

Yankees have played the white Sox. Significantly tougher team.

Well said, both of you. I wanted Houck back out there because he was doing so well and because I have been suspicious of the bullpen.

To be honest, I think the Sox lose this game if Houck doesn't go 7 innings while giving up no more runs. The bullpen is that bad.

Whoops. You caught moonslav once again being the cockeyed optimist, which I have to admit is overall a good quality.

How many pitchers are effective after the 3rd round? They are very few.

It's really so simple. The Yankees have a bullpen and we don't--and good pitching, especially by a bullpen, routinely beats good hitting.

And, when we were losing we played tougher teams. (Maybe. I didn't check- lol.)

Sox bullpen is which of the following movies:

Big Trouble in Little China

Nothing but Trouble

Agreed :( it’s a shame, the bullpen which was a strength for us through the first half has been atrocious through the second. I figured if they had to go half the game today it wouldn’t go well :(

Well, Eovaldi is more effective the 4th time through than the third, so go figure.

Sale is slightly better the 3rd time than 2nd. (career .652 to .653.)

Hahahah. I love Moon. He’s extremely optimistic. It’s great. I admit I get a bit too down, but damn I had a bad feeling about this series. Yankees look like a totally different team this second half. Sox do too…. But for the wrong reasons

Though it’s been a very close game. I thought we would score 3-5 against Mont and their bullpen. I was right. I just wasn’t totally sure how our pitching would hold up.

This was not the day to take out Houck after 58 pitches. You never know what you are going to get from the pen these day. In a 7 inning game, the manager has the luxury of shortening his pen to 2 innings maybe even 1.

Absolutely. And that's my point. No way, no how do I see Houck going 7 innings, which means the Sox bullpen always gets a chance to give the game away.

My goodness, 10 days ago Barnes--our closer who just got a big pay raise-- gave a game away on just 1 stupid pitch. He's gifted that way. And the next day, because he has only thrown 1 pitch the day before, he came back out and gave up 2 more runs, but this time needed 18 pitches to do it.

Season long, Whitlock has been our best reliever, and today he was just awful.

point is they have to let him go deeper, otherwise they will never develop him.

IMO Houck does not make this walking carousel that our BP just did in the 5th.

The good news from this game is that Cora has not used Sawamura, Ottavino, or Barnes.

The bad news is that Ottavino and Barnes will be available for the night game.

Even if Houck struggles, at least the hitters earn their hits…

Schwarber got lucky, and I'm glad he did.

Actually, that was a smart swing, which JDM and others would do well to copy.
