Look, even Chaim Bloom obviously has a fancy for bringing back over the hill Red Sox players...

Namely Travis Shaw and Jose Iglesias…

I spoke in general terms: "I don't get the fixation..."

Don't pretend you've never heard others wish we had JBJ back.

Beni back.

Kimbrell back.

Betts back (has merit).

Even Porcello back.

Hell, some were bummed we traded Price.

Wonder why people would want to bring back players that could be better than what the Sox have now?

A lot of this is just silly.

For example, the only reasons people advocated for Porcello were the assumption he'd come very cheaply and his ability to eat innings would have some value.

Yes.

Posted
Some of it had to do with the fact that he was still out there with no apparent interest being shown in him.

Yes. It was only because he was available.

Reggie Jefferson for hitting coach.

Ellis Burks is a good guy on the telecasts, but so far offers little fresh insight. I don't know why NESN doesn't try Bill Lee... with Eck... nevermind, yes I do: too happy. I think the last time they gave him the mic was during an old-timer's game a few years ago -- face flush, pupils dilated, laughing through half his (loud) words.

Burks is pretty dull and boring.

Like Masterson was?

Nobody was asking for Justin Masterson. He had a 5.88 ERA the year before he came back. People thought he could maybe be a 5th starter. Nobody was asking for him to come back in 2015.

Nobody?

Almost every year there was pining.

I'm guessing only in his good years.

I seem to recall it being a yearly ritual, but that was before I was on this site.

His 2012 season was his only awful one in CLE. Posters seem to pine, even during and after bad seasons.

JBJ is at .502, and we are hearing pining.

Beni wads at .624, which in fairness was better than Cordero, on May 1st, and the pining occured.

Kimbrel in 2019- mostly before he got to 6.53 and 5.28 his first 2 yrs after BOS, and some at this recent deadline.

We all know ex-Sox players are mentioned more often that similar players, and I can understand why.

I guarantee if you start a poll "Want JBJ back next year?" the no votes will be much higher than the yes votes.

You're picking on one or two posters who brought him up as a way to make the defense better next year.

You mean from 2010 - 2013?

Ok. Who had the most fWAR in that time period: Justin Masterson or any Red Sox pitcher?

However, I don't think anyone wanted Masterson after he fell off a cliff in 2014.

His 2014 in CLE was pretty bad.

Nobody is pining for JBJ. It was just an idea to add DEFENSE in RF. If someone can point out a similar player that is available in FA, let me know. Instead of listing similar players yesterday, you just provided a list that included a bunch of bat first no glove guys that don't fix our OF problem.

And I spent all of 2 hours talking about it. Not sure that's "pining" for someone.

I just made a simple point about some posters mentioning getting ex Sox players back, when similar players are available and sometimes for less money.

I get why.

You can argue semantic over "pining" or just mentioning names. It doesn't change my point.

The use of the word "pining" was intentional by you. It infers that we are sitting here holding out hope that our rescuer JBJ will come back in 2022. Nobody thinks that. It was just an option to help the defense that you've been complaining about.

JBJ's name was brought up a lot over last winter. My comment was not just about the most recent comment.

After the JBJ name came up, this time, there were several posts about bringing him back.

Maybe "pining" has a connotation not appropriate for your comment, but it certainly was for many made over the winter and even into early 2021.

He was brought up last winter because he was on last year's team..................

I know, and I said I understand why, but even after he signed with Milwaukee there was pining.

I'm not sure why you are making such a big deal out of the semantics. The point I made is obvious to all. We hear a lot of posters wanting ex-Sox players back. It's natural and understanding. It wasn't meant to be some earth-shattering discovery.

After he signed, who brought up JBJ again before yesterday? I don't remember that at all.

I don't remember specifics, but several times, people pined for Beni, JBJ and Betts back in the OF.

This isn't worth going on and on about. I don't get it.

I think it's reasonable to wish Betts was still on the team.

It's reasonable to want the others, too.

I think you are reading too much into my statement.

The Sox did win a ring with that outfield. It is reasonable and understandable to want them . It is also reasonable to realize that nothing lasts forever. Things change.

Yes, it is reasonable, except for maybe JBJ's .502 OPS.

I never even implied it wasn't reasonable. I just pointed out that many posters pine for ex-Sox players when equal or better options aare out there- sometimes for cheaper. I didn't think that statement was going to be dissected, inspected and debated so much.
