JBJ at 12 is completely asinine!!! Stupid stupid move to bring that payroll back along with his .163 avg!

The worst part is the insane $8M buy-out for 2023- all but assuring he's on the books for next year!

Binales and or Hamilton better earn that money!

We'll have lots of cap room to work with considering all the guys who will be out of here in November. Hiding JBJ's salary will be the least of our concerns.

It still counts against the tax line, and with so many huge shoes to fill, every dollar may be needed.

I’m just concerned about 2022 right now, and at the moment JBJ, and his $12M is a big deal.

Yup. We have $18M available, assuming Bloom is given enough to approach the limit. Add $12M and we might have been able to sign Suzuki and McHugh.

I meant $16M available. The edit function is still messed up.

They already reset the cap. His current salary shouldn't be an issue for a large market team like the Sox.

Just, because there is a cap doesn’t mean the Red Sox will spend up to that amount.

You do realize that if the trade for JBJ is what prevented Bloom from signing those two, that would make him incompetent at his job?

It was MIGHT have prevented, and not what prevented the signings. I don’t think Suzuki was coming either way, but who knows on McHugh.

Should not and will not are not the same.

My guess is, Henry would be okay with going a little over, if he felt like it greatly increased our odds for a ring. I just think top brass does not think we are at that point.

I think last year was the same thing.

You don't think a $72M/5 offer to Suzuki brings him here? Or maybe an $82M/6 offer?

Did he ever visit the Sox like he did other teams?

As was reported, he only visited teams with AZ Spring Training sites. Seems like the Sox were never an option for him?

That’s why you never listen to interest, and rumors.

Don't think so. Early on, he seemed open to the Sox.

Other signees at doable numbers (assuming no JBJ)- not saying I wished we signed any of these guys to $1M more:

OF

$19.8M x 4 Schwarber

$19.5M x 4 S Marte

$15M x 4 Chris Taylor

$13.3M x 4 Avisail Garcia

$13.3M x 2 M Canha

SS

$25M x 7 Semien

$23.3M x 6 Baez (maybe the closest I'd come to taking this deal)

$5.5M x 3 L Garcia

$5M x 1 Iggy (2B)

2B

$10M x 2 E Escobar

$5.5M x 1 Josh Harrison

SP

$23.6M x 3 Stroman

$23M x 5 R Ray

$22M x 5 Gausman

$22M x 2 Rodon

$21M x 1 Syndergaard

$20M x 1 Morton (just 1 yr)

$15.4M x 5 ERod (maybe?)

$14M x 4 Jon Gray (maybe?)

$12.5M x 2 A Wood

RP

$14.5M x 4 R Iglesias

$10M x 1 Knebel

$8M x 3 Graveman

$8.5M x 2 Neris, Kelly & Loup

$7M x 2 Melancon

$6.5M x 2 Chafin

$5.5M x 2 Y Garcia

$5M x 2 McHugh (yes) & Raley

$12M x 3 Kikuchi

$12M x 3 DeSciafani

$10M x 2 A Cobb

$11M x 4 S Matz

$9M x 2 E Rosario

The rumor was that he was only visiting AZ sites and that he'd sign with one of those teams. I correctly posted a long time ago that he wouldn't sign with the Sox.

Posted
But "interest & rumors" said he wanted AZ ST'ing sites.

Wasn’t supposedly at one time the Red Sox were the front runner to land Suzuki? Were the Cubs even mentioned back then?

I don't recall.

Then, we heard only west coast teams.

I'm still thinking he might have chosen us, if we offered more. I just think Bloom has a lower value placement than other GMs or his limited spending budget is forcing his frugality.

@alexspeier

Cora said Dalbec will get work in the OF and at 2B in addition to 1B/3B. Cora also said he wants to see Duran bunt and hit more to all fields in order to make greater use of his speed.

I like both of these ideas.

Sounds solid.

With Chris Sale out indefinitely, I'm guessing Wacha will get an opportunity to start. He should be familiar with that role considering he's started 184 games out of 202 games pitched.

Based on recent trend in Bloom's spending, it would have been an overpay to have Wacha in the pen and pay him $7M, topped only by unfortunate contract extension given to Barnes.

But who knows what was discussed during negotiation.

I think would probably be starting, even if Sale was healthy.

1. Eovaldi

2. Sale

3. Pivetta

4. Hill

5. Wacha
