Since they lost last night, I need to tell you what I REALLY feel about the 2021 Sox!

The 1946-1949 Red Sox were eerily similar to the 1975-1978 Red Sox.

1946-lost WS in 7

1947-won 83 games, finished 3rd

1948-lost one game playoff to Cleveland

1949-lost last 2 games to Yankees to finish 1 game behind them

1975-lost WS in 7

1976-won 83 games, finished 3rd

1977-finished T2nd, 2.5 games behind Yankees

1978-lost one game playoff to Yankees

That's a very cool bit of history!

Good comparison, but fans forget how bad the collapse of 1974 really was: 70-54 on August 23 -- egads, almost identical to today -- except that record in '74 had Boston in first, seven games ahead... then the Red Flops only won 14 more and finished third, seven games back.

In '74 Rice and Lynn were September call-ups and not part of the problem. Their best player, Fisk, broke his arm in Spring Training and only played in 52 games; I remember going back to school and one of my friends commenting how the Sox couldn't have had a better summer even with Fisk (his back-up was Bob Montgomery).

Suddenly, Boston completely stopped hitting, scoring three runs or less in 13 of 18 straight games (predictably, they went 5-13). The whole slump started when All-Star starters Tiant and Lee lost both ends of a double-header to Baltimore, 1-0 and 1-0... back when they played nine innings.

Always blame myself for the 1974 collapse. After living within walking distance from Fenway Park for seven years when we could get into the bleachers for free after the sixth inning, my apartment lease was up at the end of August and I was expecting to start work in NYC a couple of months later. I moved out of Massachusetts when the Red Sox were in first.

Also blame myself for 1986 because I was sitting in Shea Stadium during the seventh game of the World Series, hoping that I’d witness the end of the Curse of the Bambino.

I didn’t attend another Red Sox game until July 29, 2012 when I sat through a two-hour rain delay for a late Saturday afternoon game at Yankee Stadium, but stayed until the end to see the Red Sox blow a five-run lead and win it in the ninth, 8-6 on a triple by Pedro Ciriaco.

Nice memory,

That was heartbreak hill before the 75 WS heart ache.

I went back and looked at the game logs from ‘74. They had actually lost 6 of 8 before that doubleheader.

Many remember the 1978 collapse as being worse, and in some ways it was. We were up 10 games on July 8th and shortly later won 5 in a row to be up 9 on July 19th, but the the wheels came off, all at once.

We lost 5 in a row and 9 of 10 to get down to a 4.5 game lead, then won 6 in a row at the end of August to get back to 7 up.

We then went 3-13 to fall back 2.5 games, and everyone, and I mean everybody counted us out. Amazingly, we finished 12-2 to force the tie with the Yanks., yet that team was always thought of as big chokers.

Which math is wrong?

All of it.

There is a repeated theme that (-3) = 26.

I think you’re using the wrong symbols because it looks like you’re trying to say:

1946 minus 1949 plus 29 is equal to 1975 minus 1978…

The symbol '-' is representative of 'minus' and also 'thru.'

If used in a math example, to avoid confusion, it might be better to just write the word thru.

Thank you for correcting those goobers.

If that's how you work PEMDAS, no wonder I don't trust IFRS.

You and notin are full-fledged GOOBERS on this one. The math was fine.

Or, simply write out the equation for the years involved, like 1946+1947+…

Yeah what kind of moron thinks they should subtract when they see a minus sign…

What kind of Sox fans on a Sox website sees 1975-1978 and thinks it's a subtraction math problem?

When you start adding "+29=" to it.

Exactly.

It’s not as if math doesn’t have symbols for series summations….

I'm not saying we shouldn't have put 1975 to 1978, but did you honestly not get the point?

Do you not get rudimentary math?

1946-1949+29=1975-1978

How about:

1946+29=1975

1947+29=1976

1948+29=1977

1949+29=1978

So you’re saying if two years are 29 years apart, the years following each one are also 29 years apart?

Call Ripley!!

No.

Was he saying 1946+1947+1948+1949 + 29 = 1975 + 1976 + 1977 +1978? Because that’s also not true.

Doesn't seem to be true.

I think MVP was tongue in cheek, but Notin thinks he was doing accurate fact checking. Just my opinion.
