Since they lost last night, I need to tell you what I REALLY feel about the 2021 Sox!

ERod becomes a FA after the year. He has made 25 or more starts exactly once in his career. He is more Eovaldi than iron man.

WRONG!

He's neither an iron man or injury prone. Is there no gray area for you?

Not all 20-24 start seasons are due to injury. Surely, you know this.

2015, he started 8 games at Pawtucket then 21 in BOS. That's 29, not less than 25.

2016, 20 BOS + 7 Pawtucket = 27 and again, not less than 25.

2017, 28 starts in majors (25) and minors (3)= 28. You guessed it- not less than 25.

2018, 27+2=29.

2019, led the league in GS'd with 34.

2020: COVID is not an injury.

2021: 7 starts, already.

True, he's missed a few games here and there, and had to rehab in the minors. He missed some time with a knee injury but in all but 2020, he's started 27 or more games since 2015. (5 of his previous 6 seasons.)

Look again at Eovaldi vs ERod.

Try Taillon, Kluber, Richards, Sevarino and more...

He's also never made less than 20.

With jacko, you’re either Cal Ripken or you’re Mickey Klutts. Nothing in between.

(For those unfamiliar with Gene Ellis “Mickey” Klutts, he’s often called “the most appropriately named player in baseball history.” In his 8 year career, he spent more days on the Disabled List than his career at bats total. He also might be the most glaring omission from the “Fun With Baseball Names” thread...)

The pen gave up ANOTHER run last night. Can't expect the Sox to win consistently when they are pitching like that!

I don't care how many starts he got in the minors. It is about the majors. He has made 25+ starts in the majors once. A single time. And he is about to be a FA

That's fine, but the "missed" ML starts were not due to injury. Does that not matter when labelling someone "injury prone?"

Argue he was not good enough to start 27+ games, but don't argue he's always hurt.

I'm interested to hear your take when he signs with the Yankees.

We all tend to highlight the good in our own players and the bad in our rivals, but we know we do it, and some of us don't usually go to jacko's extreme (or we don't realize we are.)

ERod is not an ace. That really isnt a slight, it is a fact. He is an injury prone player who's production fits in the good category. He is a low 2 high 3, IMO in today's game. There are no 1's on the sox currently. Maybe Sale gets back to that with his elbow reconstructed. Maybe his shoulder is still a wreck and he doesn't. But the sox have a dire need at the head of the rotation and nobody has grabbed it.

The Sox are not in dire need of anything right now. Our pitching staff has kept us in pretty much every game except for 2 or 3. There is nothing in the peripheral stats to suggest that the rotation has been lucky or that they are not pitching as well as their results are indicating. The rotation always had the potential to be quite good. It's a matter of staying healthy.

Gotta go with you on this issue. When jacksonianmarch says the Sox are in dire need of an ace, he is thinking like a Yankee fan who loves ownership spending tons and tons of money. As moonslav reminds us, the rotation is doing their share in both innings pitched and results. The bullpen, except for Barnes and probably Ottavino, is a little dicey.

Sale is an ace. Our 5 guys are all pitching like solid number 2's or 3's.

A few years ago I realized that when fans talk about 'aces', the names they raise are almost invariably Hall of Fame shoo-ins or candidates.

"Justin Verlander, now that guy's an ace."

"No freaking kidding there, Sherlock."

Some people don’t even think Ottavino is solid.

Whitlock is being stretched to a starter.

Barnes is on pace for 77 IP, which is about 7 more than his career high.

We need another solid set up man and maybe two.

Maybe a couple guys we already have can improve enough to fill those roles, and I know I’ve been calling them all “sucky” of late. Some will likely be okay, but as 4-9 men not top 4 pen arms.

Bazardo, Brasier, Houck and maybe a starter who is sent to the pen when Sale returns or Whitlock is promoted to the rotation, but I’d say we have a high need area in our pen.

Then the next question is who do we think could be available for trade and what assets do we have to trade?

I have no idea who will be available for what little we are going to offer.

I’m thinking Chavis and maybe someone like Groome for a decent RPer who is overpaid.

Red Sox offense is struggling so hard right now they didn't even put a ball in play last night. Embarrassing.

But our pen did not allow a runner or run scored.

And, we gained on the Yanks.

So far--in these two games--the Jays bullpen does look better than ours. It is also true that both games were won--and lost--by the starters. Bullpens were incidental.

Ottavino and Taylor looked fine to me.

By WAR, BOS BP is at T4. TOR? 11.

I feel very confident if the game has to be decided by the BPs, not to mention our offense has been better as well according to wRC+ rankings — 4 vs 7 (111 vs 106)

Being fair, last night he didn't get a call to a marvelous down in the corner sinker. Same happened vs Texas. Those bad calls were taxed in ERs.

Not to mention he is already sporting a ERA around 2 and his run prevention indicators look good specially xfip and SIERA —3 and 2.7.

Not an excuse at all but IMO kid has a very encouraging future. IMO just kinda bad luck lately.

There is an old axiom in baseball that you can not tell the team you have until they have played fifty games. Well with forty five in the bag, this team is better than the one I thought they would be in February. Yes they still have some holes, I do not expect Cordero to be on the big club much longer, but help in on the way. If they continue to play this way Bloom will definitely be a buyer come the trade deadline. I think it is reasonably to expect this team to contend for a playoff spot. Whatever happens I look forward to every game they play. I could not say that about last years team.
