Arroyo to the IL. Houck has a flexor strain and has been shut down

How serious is flexor strain?

Worst case scenario, it's a precursor to Tommy John.

FWIW Cora says this isn't serious. We'll see.

Way off topic....but I see that both Vanderbilt starters are pitching well this spring.....I was hoping we'd get one. Matta, now Tanner (ok it maybe minor). I was looking at 3 starters from this group for 2023.

Cora's job is to downplay it. They said the same thing about Clarke Schmidt and he hasn't thrown a pitch in anger yet. If I were the sox, I would over-extend his rest if I knew his injury was not serious just to ensure he doesn't rehab and then return for a game as a precursor to TJS. Either fix it if it needs fixing or rest it til it's healed

Well, Houk is a reliever long term anyway.

Would not have minded short term as well...

Me, neither, but with so little starter depth, we're kinda stuck with this, now.

I seriously doubt we make it all the way to Sale's return without needed a 6th starter.

They keep saying they want to stretch out Whitlock, but they aren't doing it.

Do we know if it is a strain or is it a partial tear?

I would hate to have houck in the denial zone that sale put us through for over a year!

Can't ya just feel the "concern?"

Getting out more now that we're over .500? Good to see yours was just a strain & not a full blown sprain.

Another poster with 75 in his name approves of this rip roast post!

We all know defenses in both Boston and New York aren't quite championship caliber this year (not to mention rotation depth)...

...but now that the Sox are #1 in MLB's power rankings, we just need the Ghost to start a Deadline Trade for Scherzer thread.

One could claim the team put us and Sale through it.

No, but did they want him to?

I have no idea exactly how the discussions went. I suspect the medical people involved couldn't absolutely say that surgery was required or was the best option.

I get the impression that the team is usually the one who wants to put off surgery, especially for players with just 1-2 years left of team control- not Sale in this case.

Any examples in mind?

Not really, but maybe notin can fill in some blanks.

No, but then medical discussions are not made public.

I do think everyone thinks of surgery as a last resort, just like any of us prefer it be when it comes to ourselves. But with ballplayers, we tend to think they need t rush into it faster then they prefer...

With medical breakthroughs, rest and rehab can take longer and have more deleterious results than operative repair and rehab

If I'm the owner, the question is when will he back surgery vs rest? Obviously you don't want to perform surgery on healthy body...

That said, what I'm afraid is we wait and situation isn't improved and have the surgery in October. Then his 2022 season is shot and probable return of summer of 2023.

If he has surgery today, he'll be back summer of 2022.

I guess as long as he's not accumulating major league time, his absence won't really matter, unlike Sale where he's under major league contract and he's getting paid.

I think they have to determine if there is a tear first.

When I had my knee injury in college, I tore my acl, mcl, pcl and the patella tendon, they had to wait for the swelling to go down some before taking the pictures. But the pictures were definitive once they took them,

Maybe that is what they are doing with houck!
