I wonder who's going to bite the bullet and give Marcus Semien a huge contract next year with this career year he's having. He'll be 31 and absolutely no way he duplicates what he's doing this year for years to come

The division races are more or less over in the AL, though Seattle could still mathematically catch Houston. However, with about 1 week to go, the WC race will be exciting and nerve-racking. An advantage to the Red Sox is the head to head games between the Yankees and the Jays and between the Mariners and the As.

In the NL, the WC race is more or less over, though there are still a couple of division races going on. The NL East race is the one carrying the most significance because whoever doesn't win the division goes home.

Go Red Sox! Go baseball!

Giants up 2.0 on Dodgers.

If Giants can send Dodgers to a WC game that will be a monumental achievement in itself.

Giants are up 2.0 again. Amazing stuff.

The Dodgers could win 105 games and still have to win a one game play-in with the red hot Cards. That could start some talk about changing the playoff rules.

Dodgers with 106 wins to play a winner take all wild card game. And then if they win that game immediately have to play the Giants. They need to fix this playoff system they have.

Almost worse than that is that the Giants will likely have to play the Dodgers in the first series.

Yes exactly. Winning the top record is supposed to get you to play the team with the least wins. This system is broken

So… awards?

My thoughts.

AL

MVP: Vlad Guerrero JR.

Cy Young: Gerrit Cole

ROY: Randy Arozarena

MOY: Kevin Cash

NL

Cy Young: Corbin Burnes

MVP: Trea Turner (Bryce Harper gets all the hype but did you see that season Turner had?)

ROY: Jonathan India

MOY: David Bell. (It’s going to be Kapler, but Bell was equally impressive and deserves some love.)

How about Cincy ending up with 3 of the top 8 OPS finishers?

6. Winker .949

7. Castellanos .939

8. Votto .938

450+ PAs

TOR had 3 in the top 28:

2. Vladdy

27. Semien .873

28. Hernandez .870

Sox had 3 in the top 32 (4, if you count Schwarber)

9. Schwarber .928

22. Devers .890

30. JD .867

32. Bogey .863

LAD had 4 in the top 46 (5 if you count Trea Turner)

15. T Turner .911

19. Muncy .895

34. Smith .860

36. Betts .854

46. J Turner .832

I might go...

MVP: Ohtani/T Turner

Cy: Cole/ Burnes

ROY: Adolis Garcia/ J India

MOY: Cora/Kapler

You guys are right. A huge flaw in this new wild card system.

There used to be one division in each league, now there are three.

What MLB values is the dollar bill.

I know this.

There used to be far fewer teams, too.

Once they hit 3 divisions per league, they valued division winners over wild card teams with better records. That part had nothing to do with money.

Yes, it's always been about money- as is much of what goes on in our lives.

Ohtani is winning MVP. As much as Vladdy had a great season you could argue he wasn't the best player on that team. His teammate semien had a better WAR than he did. Ohtani almost had the same production at the plate than Vladdy and Semien and added 150IP of great pitching. No way he doesn't win this hands down

And, it's not just the novelty of pitching and hitting: he was very good to great at both.

Vlad had higher fWAR than Semien.

7.1 to 6.8 in favor of WAR for Semien ESPN leaders

Fangraphs has vladdy at 6.7 and Semien at 6.6

Like I said, you could argue that Vladdy wasn't the best on his team.

Let's just call it a dead heat between Vlad and Semien.

MVP awards typically go to the player with the better offensive numbers. A lot of Semien's value rests in his defense.

If you combine Ohtani's pitching and hitting, you get 8.1 fWAR. He's barely a top 20 fWAR guy for batting and worse for pitching.

I could be sold on a few different guys for the MVP this season, especially since I don't care all that much about it.

Wow, Kimbrel has turned into a pumpkin since his trade to the White Sox

Too bad, Bloom settled on Robles, instead of Kimbrel and Schwarber over Rizzo.

I'm sick of the playoff format. That series should have been the NLCS. How can MLB let the 2 top teams face off this early in the playoffs? It's a f***ing joke of a system. People might say , but yeah this doesn't happen often. It happened just a few years ago with when the Sox won the WS. It happens more frequent than people think

Agreed, and if they want more money from more playoff games, do away with the play-in game and make the first round 7 games.
