My guess is any of these top players will be thrilled to be picked by the Sox (not a bad team).

My guess is anyone selected by the Pirates, Rangers or Tigers will be equally thrilled, if not more so. Especially anyone who grew up around any of those teams. (Like Lawler and the Rangers.)

I doubt the thrill will be equal.

So far, the talking heads have the Sox selecting either Davis, Leiter, Lawler, Watson, Jobe, and probably someone else. Considering Bloom took Nick Yorke last year, maybe we need to write off all of the obvious candidates and count on him doing something off script. Madden? Fabian? Who else would you suspect he would never pick?

Sticking with Rocker here for two reasons 1. Bloom is unpredictable 2. I'm stubborn…

I'd be happy with Rocker.

More happy with Leiter or Davis.

It's not just about pitch-framing. It's also blocking wild pitches, avoiding passed balls and to me, getting the most out of the staff- not necessarily just by calling a good game.

If the guy can hit, it won't matter where he plays.

My point is the part of his game where his defense really lacks is his pitch framing. That’s not going to matter in a few years with Robo umps.

I think you have to throw away the Yorke pick. Big difference picking #4. Also, they didn’t have a 2nd round pick last year in a shortened draft and we’re trying to maximize their other picks.

This doesn’t mean Bloom won’t look to cut a deal with the guy at the top, but I wouldn’t look much into 2020z

Yes, I understood your point.

Coming around to Davis as a hitter. Judging by the highlight video, he's not a pure masher, but an all-fields line drive guy. This is the kind of approach that can lead to consistent offense at levels going forward.

I was sour on Davis in the beginning too but really came around on him. It appears he’s ranked high not because he’s a catcher with plus offense but rather he has plus offense and happens to be a catcher.

He might be the most likely guy to hit in the middle of your lineup, and by the time he reaches the majors we may have Robo umps, and with his 70/80 arm controlling the run game he could be a stud.

Still like Leiter, would be happy with the top high school short stops too.

It’s looking likely that Pitt will cut a deal with someone at the top.

Jordan Lawlar was flown to Pitts just several days ago.

If one can deduce Mayer goes 2-3 then one of Leiter/Davis will be there if those are the Sox preferences.

Been some rumors of Sal Fredrick cutting a deal at #1. Please let Pitt be that dumb

Big moment for Ben Cherington?

I'd be happy with a HS SS, too, but my top 3 hopes are:

1. Leiter

2. Davis

3. Rocker

If we end up with Jobe or Watson, I'll be surprised but not upset.

It’s a tough spot for Cherington or any Pitt GM. How do you sign a high school kid for $8.4 million today and then tomorrow go to an actual Major League ballplayer asking for $4million in arbitration and tell him that’s too much money?

But the $8.4 million secures the player's rights for X number of seasons, doesn't it?

Odds are they’re saving 1-2 million off that first pick, but I’m sure they’re fine spending the money. Lawlar won’t be the first Hs bat to go first.

The slot value for #1 is $8.4mill (per my extremely cursory research consisting of one Google search. Please correct me if necessary).

If Pitt were to sign a player for slot value, he would be the second highest player on the team this year, behind Gregory Polanco, whom they would dump yesterday). Even going way underslot down to $4.4 million would make their pick the third highest player behind Polanco and the imprisoned Felipe Vazquez (who I’m pretty sure isn’t getting paid) and just ahead of All Star Adam Frazier, who won’t be a Pirate in 3 weeks.

That whole scenario with that team is pretty effed up…

You draftniks are amazing. Every time I think of myself as an obsessive baseball nerd, I come to this thread and realize I'm the equivalent of a bench player compared to some others. :D

No!!!!! Everyone roots for the game in there own way. I’ve always loved watching the farm and the kids come up, many fans take the “call me when they’re in Boston approach” to each their own.

It’s easier to get wrapped up in all this when the Sox have the #4 pick

So true. I'm very much a “call me when they’re in Boston” guy. But having the #4 pick is a big deal for sure.

We have not picked this high since the 60's.

There is good reason for some excitement.

Having the best AL record and picking 4th is a special thing that has never happened in Red Sox Nation.

Yeah, that's a pretty nice combo package.

But if you have 3-4 seasons in MLB facing actual Major League pitchers, don’t you think you might find it a tad insulting that some kid whose never faced pitching at a higher level than 12th grade is getting more money than you?

I get how the system works, but these negotiations have to be rough/delicate on small market GMs…

I’m more of a “they mean nothing until they get to AA” kind of guy….

Someday -- maybe in the next CBA -- teams will be able to trade their draft order picks; then it will be even more fun.

It seems strange not to have already happened.

I don't know, maybe it's good that baseball isn't exactly like football...not quite as much of a meat market, so to speak.

Since the draft is so much more hit and miss, one would think it is less important and therefore less reason to disallow trades of picks.

The NFL actually counts on the drafts for ticket sales for some teams. When you draft first and suck, that high pick is somehow treated like a marketable glimmer of hope. MLB just can’t do that, since many players that get drafted are still years away…

If you could trade picks, would you trade the 4th pick for the 10th and a second rounder?

It seems hard to place value on draft slots.

Leave that stuff to Belichick LOL
