Hopefully this doesn't come across as racist, but some of these Japanese relievers have a long shelf life.

Fun non-racist fact: the two longest careers for Japanese pitchers in MLB belong to Hideo Nono (12 years) and Tomo Ohka (10 years).

Of course, many are already 30 or close to it when they come to the USA...

Can someone bring up the collective ERA of Japanese Red Sox relievers? I know it's damn good. Leave out starters, Dice-K messed that up.

Just kidding about the stat dig part...

While not difficult, it’s somewhat biased in that we only get their best relievers/pitchers in the first place.

It would be like asking for the ERA of all the All Star pitchers from Texas as evidence about the superiority of pitchers from Texas...

Or Dice-Zzz, because you had time to take a full and restful nap in between pitches...

We're probably within days of swapping Dalbec and Chavis.

Chavis only has a 758 OPS in AAA. What do we expect him to do differently here? The last time he was up he had a 39.4 k% and a 0.0000 bb%.

Sox may do better finding some veteran retread to bring in.

“Hey there, Mr. Beane. What would it take to pry Mitchie Two-Bags from your roster?”

.758 is like 200 points better than Dalbec and Santana, especially of late.

.422 Dalbec in his last 54 PAs

.595 Dalbec this year

.188 Santana last 27 PAs

.530 Santana this year

Chavis is no savior, but if he can just hit .650, it would be a big plus.

I also think he has the potential to hit .750 to .780.

Yep, he always wanted to pitch with bases full. Walking was part of his strategy.

Yup. Should have signed him in the offseason.

758 in AAA. That's not better than what Dalbec is doing right now. Chavis hitting .650 is not a plus. Dalbec has the higher ceiling. Either roll with Dalbec or find a vet to bring in.

Stoutly reasoned, to steal a Samuel Beckett line.

Cordero had a .502 OPS in MLB. He's not OPSing 1.248 in AAA.

.758 in AAA is NOT better than what Dalbec is currently doing.

He's now up to 1.254. Slugging .810, which is a good OPS on its own...

Dice-K's career 4.45 ERA was not really horrific. (4.52 with the Sox)

It was 4.14 his first 2 years with the Sox and 4.18 his first 4 years (to age 30).

How about these forgettable names and their ERA with the Sox:

6.52 Jin Ho Cho (58 IP)

6.50 Sun-Woo Kim (71 IP)

Not so forgettable:

4.50 Hideo Nomo (198)

3.72 Byung-Hyun Kim (97)

The Memorable:

3.58 Tazawa (312)

3.09 Okajima (250)

2.19 Uehara (226)

Dice-K was fine in the back of the rotation, the problem was he was advertised as the next great thing in the majors.

If Dalbec gets demoted, the Sox might be better off just letting Marwin start at 1B.

With all these super versatile guys, the Sox should not have to rely on the AAA team to fill positions...

It's .758 in MLB, this year, not AAA. Granted, it was just 33 PAs, but his career MLB OPs is .730 over almost 600 PAs- a bigger sample size than Dalbec's.

I say, fill Worcester with guys that can mash. Let them win the AAA title and fill that stadium in its inaugural year.

Chavis hitting .650 is a plus over Dalbec hitting .450 or Santana hitting .200, recently.

Sorry, his OPS is 469 in AAA. Yes, bring that guy up! He's deserved it!

Dalbec has a .610 overall. Not sure what "recently" even means here.

I thought Santana was hitting well enough for you???

Even .469 is better than Dalbec, recently. That's the point.

It's not about having confidence in Chavis, who has actually done something in the bigs, already- and pretty recently, too.

Not sure? You already responded to my post that listed this...

Santana did start off well, for a few games, and he did deserve a shot, especially because we'd have lost him had we not called him up, and 2 guys went on the IL, but he has tanked recently.

He's the next guy on the hot seat, or we could have a double hot seat for Dalbec & Santana.

You're looking at 40 at bat sample sizes. The difference between .400 and .600 OPS at that size is like two doubles and a walk...

I just don't understand how you used different sample sizes to mean "recently" (54 PA vs 27 PA). Seems haphazard to me.

You're all over the map.

It's career MLB OPS for Dalbec, but AAA 2021 OPS for Chavis that counts?
