Sounds like it’s down to Mets and Dodgers. Not entirely sure why the Yanks haven’t jumped in here. Most recent reported offer was 4 yrs $120+ mil with a series of opt outs. If the Dodgers get him, it could be repeat city here.

Kershaw

Bauer

Buehler

May

Price

Ferguson

Urias

Gonsolin

That’s entirely ridiculous.

The Yankees are keeping under the luxury tax threshold, everyone and their mama knows that.

Anyway I don't think Bauer is a $30M/yr pitcher. Guy had one dominant season in 2018. Sure he looked great last season in what, only 11 starts? He wasn't good in 2019, and prior to 2018 he consistently pitched to a middling 4 ERA.

I agree. Bauer is taking advantage of great timing here. And maybe a little of that sticky stuff...(his spin rates were crazy last year and he pretty much told everyone why).

Bauer to the Mets

Are you saying it happened or just predicting?

I cannot find this actually happening anywhere...

Trevor Bauer’s decision could come today, as we discussed a short time ago on #HotStove.

Bauer to the Dodgers now. Book it...

@mlbtraderumors

#Mets have reportedly given Trevor Bauer a deadline to decide on their offer:

That's not much of a threat.

If they do not hear in time, who are they going to move on to? If they say the deadline is 4pm today, and Bauer's agent calls them tomorrow or Sunday and says they have a deal, you can bet Bauer is headed to the Mets...

Unless, the Mets sign Odorizzi at 4:01 pm, today.

Mets offer to Trevor Bauer said to be frontloaded with the opt-outs. About $40M at least in 1st year, via

@Joelsherman1

with opt-out. Dodgers Bauer offer unknown but they offered similar structure — $40M/year with rolling opt-outs to Bryce Harper. They can compete.

Red Sox tweet offer $40M to Odorizzi, Ozuna, Rosenthal, Marisnick for '21... then delete it, because it might make them a wild card contender, and they'd have to spend more as buyers at the trade deadline.

Dodgers sign Bauer!

Good for them. Only one NL team in a hundred years has won back-to-back rings. And standing pat -- especially on the pitching staff taxed from a title -- is not the way to do it (ask the '19 Red Sox). Adding an elite arm, especially connected to a guy who hasn't won -- and should be hungry -- is a smart move.

Bauer and the Dodgers agreed to a three-year deal with opt-out provisions after year one and year two of the contract, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand adds that Bauer is guaranteed a total of $102MM on the deal, which includes a $40MM salary in 2021 and a $45MM salary in 2022. Both marks establish new records for the highest single-season salary, though the contract’s overall $34MM average annual value is still a bit shy of Gerrit Cole’s record $36MM.

The 3 year length is something that really lowers the risk factors.

Dodgers fans are so relieved that Mookie's albatross contract didn't prevent LA from upgrading their defending champs.

The Dodgers don't seem to have many limits to spending. They have become the Yankees from the 90's and early 2000's.

With ex-Rays man Friedman at the helm. Kind of destroys that narrative that some have tried to apply to Bloom.

I remember saying the same thing about Dan Duquette coming from Montreal- back in the day.

I like the 3 year length for the Dodgers. Still a crazy amount of money though.

The Dodgers reset their tax penalty in 2018 and they have a very strong farm system.

Not saying that that makes spending all that money the right thing to do, but it certainly opens up more flexibility for them to do so.

The opt outs may make it an even shorter deal.

The AAV is 34 mill for 2021. It looks to me, though, that if Bauer opts out after Year Two, the Dodgers will get stuck with a 51 mill tax number for 2022, because the final figures will be 2 years and 85 mill.

The short length is the only saving grace of this contract. I have always said that I prefer a shorter deal with a higher AAV (Hey Bell, weren't we looking for examples of this earlier?), but this AAV is a bit too much for my liking.

With the contract being so heavily front loaded, Bauer is sure to opt out after the 2nd year if he pitches halfway decently.

Did the Dodgers go over the threshold in 2019?
