So far, no HRs and few extra base hits.

I've seen maybe a half-dozen at-bats. In what I've seen, he is being hammered by the low outside pitch, which he cannot hit, even waves at a half foot out of the zone.

That is what I am seeing as well. To me he seems to have lost some bat speed. His swing seems sluggish compared to years past

And the ones who do opt out often get overpaid in the next contract. Like Sabathia did.

Only when the Yankees bid against themselves, and that hasn’t happened since the Boss died.

Garrett Whitlock a lock for Boston Red Sox roster after posting 1.00 ERA in 9 spring innings: ‘We have a good one,’ Alex Cora says

Speaking of team control coup, Whitlock's six year service starts in couple of weeks.....3 years at less than $3M....accountants approve...I didn't realize he could be a starter

material in future...

Are we all jumping on board the Whitlock train? What role is it that our posters project him to fill? Rule V guys almost always get returned.

Math teachers also approve.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I think our pitching staff, both starting and relieving, is coming together pretty nicely. If they can stay healthy, which is a big if, they should be solid. I'm not talking about a lights out staff, but solid. They should be good enough to give our offense the chance to win a lot of games. Our depth looks so much better than it did last year.

i think our staff is lights out. Turn off the lights and the TV. This staff isn’t worth watching when ERod isn’t on the hill, and I will also be turning off the radio when the parade of pigs starts from the pen.

Are top 4 rule 5 picks usually returned or moth-balled?

Your optimism is refreshing.

Of all seasons, I am least worried about the sox in this one

Once you knew Sale & ERod were out, you should have been less worried, last year.

Like Johan Santana and Brad Keller?

i am keeping my expectations low.

The Sox are without their ace, so not surprising.

But why are you so opposed to them taking chances in a year when they’ve already lost Sale?

I would have rolled the dice with Duran instead of Codero. One in the hand is worth two in the bush. But I enjoy betting the ponies, so probably am not the best of advocates.

I guess it's time to be officially worried about JD.

Duran is really looking good. He and Dalbec are two reasons to have some excitement for the next few years.

Thanks Dave!

I want to see what he looks like the end of May before I jump overboard.

I’m concerned, but not much more than I am about Sale, Eovaldi, Richards, ERod, Barnes, DHern, Cordero and many others.

I’m expecting at least .800.

If he’s at .650 by the end of May, yes..

Exactly.

I remember 1994 when Jon Valentin looked completely lost at the plate. On April 30, he was hitting .160 (with a .501 OPS!!).

But then he somehow turned it around quick and wound up hitting .306 on the season...

How many times did we have to endure pages and pages of “JBJ looks lost at the plate” posts?

I am looking forward to the day that Whitlock and Ottavino combine to shut down the Yankees in the ALCS to send the Red Sox to the 2021 World Series.

Well at least you will have the opportunity to be pleasantly surprised.

My concerns about JD are age-related and bat-speed-related.

These are legitimate concerns, for sure.

JD and Cora seem to think it's a mechanical issue.

Okay, I'll drink to them being right. :)

Nothing mechanical is going to allow him to reach pitches low and away outside the strike zone, unless he uses an extension taped to the end of his bat.

p.s. this is why I fear there may a vision issue, because you know he knows they're going to keep throwing the same crap every time he has two strikes.
