Ok but the Sox still need a reliever (or two, IMHO) and a CF.

Now if the $30 mill budget was accuate, that leaves $13 mill plus whatever was deferred in Hernandez’ deal...

It could be that they sign a reliever and call it a day. Perhaps they go with what they have in the OF and reassess midseason.

Or perhaps we are all assuming that the Sox will stay under the cap when no such mandate exists.

They're going over, I think. Bloom has been working on JH to loosen up and have fun.

I'm not so sure that Bloom is necessarily on board with going over. He may prefer to have the reset intact in the upcoming years.

The second sentence was attempted humor.

I'd rather have an extra RP'er of Marisnick.

Why get both Pillar and Marisnick?

I could see Almora (BABIP-fueled bounce back/breakout?) over one of them. But if the Sox need a 4th OF, Arroyo or Chavis can be used to push Kike out there...

Because I traded Beni for a RP'er, and we'd need OF depth. (Maybe Miller would be better.)

We happy about this seriously??? My God how Paethetic Chaim Bloom has made this 4 th place team .Tell me Guys and Gals how is this walking injury going to improve this team from a team on pace for 100 loss season last year to what ??... tell me please .This is a 79 win team as constructed and I’m pissed off .What happened to Boston sports ? Overnight they are door mats .Have at it celebrate another s***** castoff injury prone player .Yikes and Meanwhile the Yankees get Even better .Delusional if you think We are better than the Yankees Rays and Blue Jays ....what a GM .I say blow the damn Budget up and get an actual legit threat to other teams ....Osuna and elevate our young pitchers might as well .I am hopeful his medicals are so freaking bad we drop him like a hot pocket strait out the toaster oven . Robert Osuna and his torn UCL are not part of the solution.

Bloom reportedly has no budget. This means he is not allowed to sign Springer or Bauer...

Sign Puig!

He’s like Ozuna, but less money and more crazy!!

Hang’em Chaim blew his wad on Hernandez for some bizarre reason!

If “his wad” was a $7mill AAV contract, then maybe expectations need to be lowered in the face of an obvious budget crunch...

Since this is the first official Bloom offseason, I have no idea what to really expect.

Painful as it is, the 2021 season duration, fan attendance, CBA chnages in negotiation along with lux tax reset make this off season the wrong time to react spasmodically to trying to fix this team overnight . Play out 2021, get better results from guys on the roster already (JDM, RD) and get Sale fully back in 2022. It's not that hard to see Bloom and his ownership's pattern here.

Maybe Bloom's moves don't appear flashy enough to some but personally I like them all to date. I don't think that he is apt to make a knee jerk move based on what we have seen so far and I don't think that he is going to get outsmarted.

soxprospects.com has Brice as being out of options.

I'm not sure what Bloom sees in him, and I doubt they DFA him, but I agree with your idea.

I'd start Houck and Valdez in AAA.

Let's get an extra year of team control on Houck and limit his IP at the same time.

If Houck has a good solid spring, it would make no sense at all to keep him at the AAA level regardless of what it might mean contractually down the road. Doing business this way isn't good for either side.

If Houck is pitching well, he's on the opening day roster in the pen.

Maybe.

I like him over Brice and Valdez, too. But if they keep him in Worcester actually starting games, that's probably better. Our rotation features both Nate Eovaldi and Garrett Richards. Houck will be starting at Fenway before mid-May. Book it...

With our fragile rotation?

If they move Houck down to Worcester to start the season, he should just rent, not buy...

Using him to piggy back an opener is a fine option to stretch him out.

His moves are not bad, but he is in a tough spot. The team has too high of a payroll to simply take steps backwards. (Re: losing money). But not enough room left to add significant pieces without going over while still potentially missing the postseason.

If Sale had gotten his surgery immediately after the 2019 season and was ready to return a lot sooner, this team would be in a much, much easier spot to determine what path to follow...

Ok, but who would be a good opener? The idea of the opener is to use one of the better , if not the best bullpen arm to take out the opponents' best hitters one time through the lineup...

Agreed, but as soon as ERod or Sale return, I can see Houck being sent down. His innings need to be limited anyways, so the main reason is not to extend his years of team control, but if this kid does very well, one more year can be golden.

By the time ERod and/or Sale return, Eovaldi and/or Richards will be injured.

If ERod is not on the team by opening day, then Houck is probably in the rotation. If not, I agree with soxprospects.com that he should spend a few weeks in Worcester pitching the "lighter" innings and waiting for his inevitable return to the rotation...

Disagree 100%. Bloom and TB were experts at managing service time. You demote Houck to AAA, let him burn his clock, bring him up midseason and get an extra year out of him

The Sox don't need to worry about service time. Especially not for a guy who isn't even a top 5 prospect.

And if some guys recoup value to the point where they can be moved, you do so. You no longer team build based on your money between cap and salary. You team build internally or via trade and supplement on the market. The more cap space you have, the more you can supplement or really splurge on a dire team need. But you don't splurge until your team is ready and it's the one missing piece
