Theo Epstein Steps Down As Cubs’ President

By Mark Polishuk | November 17, 2020 at 11:04am CDT

Theo Epstein has stepped down as the Cubs’ president of baseball operations, as per a team announcement. The move is effective as of November 20. General manager Jed Hoyer will step into Epstein’s role.

Epstein issued the following statement:

For the rest of my life, I will cherish having been part of the great Chicago Cubs organization during this historic period. All of the things that have made this experience so special — the fans, the players, the managers and coaches, ownership, my front office colleagues, the uniqueness of the Wrigley experience, the history — make it so tough to leave the Cubs. But I believe this is the right decision for me even if it’s a difficult one. And now is the right time rather than a year from now. The organization faces a number of decisions this winter that carry long-term consequences; those types of decisions are best made by someone who will be here for a long period rather than just one more year. Jed has earned this opportunity and is absolutely the right person to take over this baseball operation at such an important time.

Hire him!

He always said that it is best to move on after ten years or so. Wonder if he has a new destination already in mind ? Edited by dgalehouse

Any reason why he stepped down other than speculation about the 10 years thing?

He feels he is ready for the biggest challenge in all of sports.

He's going to try and fix the Jets. Maybe even get them a win.

Maybe...

Don't the Mariners need him most of all?

I was going by longest active streak. Padres and Brewers would be in before the M's.

Well what about the Mariners' active streak of not even making the post-season? Both the Padres and the Brewers have at least done that as recently as 2 months ago...

He's burnt out and wants a year off.

"Next summer will be my first in 30 years not clocking into work every day at a major league ballpark."

Only titles matter. I don't think Sox fans after 2003 were thinking, well at least we've been to the WS in the 40's, 70's and 80's.

Yes but we have loftier goals than the Mariners fans. All they have to watch in October is the Seahawks...

@JeffPassan

Epstein says in the letter he will spend time with family and work with non-profits, including his Foundation to Be Named Later and The Players Alliance.

"I do plan on having a third chapter leading a baseball organization someday, though I do not expect it to be next year."

Theo left both teams in similar situations.

He got both teams their much needed and long-awaited ring(s).

He left both teams with some salary & roster issues.

I'm not bashin' the guy. He's the G.O.A.T.!

The dream GM wins championships and leaves the team in great shape too.

I'm not sure that man exists in reality...

Some pundits have speculated Epstein may transition into a career of a different type of public servant. If he runs in '24, do we still get to type about him -- at least as a Red Sox Hall of Famer?

Ah. Totally understandable. I can relate

Who leaves on top?

Jim Brown and nobody else.

This will make some of our anti-analytics people happy:

Mazz: Even Theo Epstein thinks the MLB product stinks

By Tony Massarotti, 98.5 The Sports Hub

“It is the greatest game in the world but there are some threats to it because of the way the game is evolving, and I take some responsibility for that because the executives like me who have spent a lot of time using analytics and other measures to try and optimize individual and team performance have unwittingly had, you know, a negative impact on the aesthetic value of the game and the entertainment value of the game. I mean, clearly, you know the strikeout rate is a little bit out of control and we need to find a way to get more action in the game, get the ball in play more often, allow players to show their athleticism some more and give the fans more of what they want.”

I can’t argue with that.
