This year's draft could really make a big difference going forward.

MLB fans should never count on the draft to make a difference...

Certainly not right away.

Who in America looks beyond today, let alone 4 years from now?

Even if our farm team ranking goes from around 20-25 to 10-15, that difference means little to most fans.

Well, they better get that #4 pick right. Can't Trey air-Ball it.

This is a tough year to draft, since play was reduced, last year, but you are right.

While Trey Ball was a 7th pick, 4th is even more important. We HAVE TO score bigly!

Top Sox picks:

3 Mike Garman '67

4 Ken Brett '66

5 Billy Conigliaro '65

7 Beni '15

7 Ball '13

7 Trot Nixon '93

12 Groome '16

12 Adam Everett '98

12 Tom Fischer '88

We haven't had a pick higher than 7th since 1967!

Thanks, Dave!

While Brett was never a star, he had a 14 year MLB career and was an excellent hitting pitcher. Garman was in the bigs for 9 years. Ball is the standard for failure for Red Sox picks higher than #10. Edited by a700hitter

That first round wound up being one of the worst ever. The number one overall pick never pitched an inning in the majors. And four of the pitchers taken in the top 10 combined for less than 40 IP, all but one of those IP from Kohl Stewart...

Yeah DAve really ruined those 1968-2000 drafts for the Sox ;)

You can't honestly say they were trying to field a competitive team in 2020.

Yes, 99.9% because of the situation Dave left us in.

I get the fact that this is a year after the reset, but we are still spending more than 27 teams, have no farm help for 2020 and would have to go $30M over the lux line to even be the third most favorite team in MLB.

You can say that's on Henry, because he is refusing to spend. I say, had Dave left us with a better roster or a better budget, we'd be spending, right now.

99.9% on DD.

Don't take that to mean I hate what DD did. I'm thrilled with 2018 and 3 straight AL East fist place finishes. This down time is worth it. That doesn't change whose fault it is.

Baseball Prospects Journal projects we draft

Jack Leiter RHP Vanderbilt with the 4th pick.

1. Kumar Rocker, RHP to PIT

2. Jordan Lawlar, SS to TEX

3. Jud Fabian, OF to DET

Leiter would be an awesome pick if he falls that far. I could have sworn it would have been Rocker-Leiter or vice versa 1-2

Me, too, and I bet some services have it that way.

Fabian might be a good get, too.

Please, no HS kid.

Scouting Report Update: Josh Winckowski

On Thursday, the Red Sox traded Andrew Benintendi to the Kansas City Royals in a three-way trade that also involved the New York Mets. In return, the Red Sox received outfielder Franchy Cordero and two PTBNL from the Royals and RHP Josh Winckowski and a PTBNL from the Mets. For a detailed breakdown of the trade, check out the latest episode of the SoxProspects Podcast. The only prospect we know about so far is Winckowski, who was only just acquired by the Mets in January as part of the Steven Matz trade. Winckowski slots in at 32 in the current SoxProspects Rankings, and it was announced on Friday that he got a Non-Roster Invitation to Major League Spring Training.

Here is our initial report on Winckwoski, compiled from data and reports as well as our scouting sources across the game. Please note that the report will be updated after we have seen him in person.

Physical Description: Tall, sturdy frame. Minimal remaining projection.

Mechanics: Throws from a high-three-quarters arm slot. Delivery is on the stiff side and lacks fluidity. Arm gets out of sync with his delivery and he does not effectively utilize his hips and lower body.

Fastball: 93-96 mph. Tops out at 97 mph. Fastball command is below-average and needs refinement. Pitch lacks movement and does not miss as many bats as you would expect given his velocity. Will also show a sinker. Potential plus-to-better offering with refined command.

Slider: 84-88 mph. Pitch will show hard, late break at its best. Struggles to consistently locate the pitch and get on top of it due to his delivery. Potential average offering.

Changeup: 88-90 mph. On the firm side and lacks separation from his fastball. On occasion, will show good fade. Flashes average potential.

Split-Finger Fastball: Reportedly started throwing at the 2020 Fall Instructional League.

Career Notes: Acquired by the Red Sox from the Mets as a part of the three-team Andrew Benintendi trade in February 2021. Mets acquired him from the Blue Jays in January 2021 as part of a trade for Steven Matz. Originally drafted out of Estero HS (Ohio) in 2016 and signed away from a commitment to Florida Southwestern State. Spent three seasons in short-season and another in Class A, while still being relatively young for his level, as he climbed the ladder. Missed time in 2019 with a finger injury that lingered and impacted his stuff throughout the year. Was left unprotected and went unselected in the 2020 Rule 5 Draft.

Summation: Intriguing arm who needs to work on his arsenal and command. Has the velocity you look for, but still learning how to pitch and harness his stuff. Secondary pitches lag behind and need significant refinement. Slider shows the most potential right now. Fastball/slider combination could profile well in a bullpen role. Needs to refine his arsenal and find a consistent secondary to have a chance to remain in the starting rotation.

Duran & Arauz Named to Carribbean All-Yourney Team

The Red Sox organization featured the leadoff hitter for two of the four squads in the 2021 Caribbean Series, and both were honored with All-Tournament Team recognition. Jarren Duran continued to build upon his strong finish to the season in the Roberto Clemente (Puerto Rican) League, going 10 for 25 with a homer out of the leadoff spot for Caguas. He was 2 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base in a semifinal victory over Culiacan of the Mexican League. Duran followed with a 1-for-2 effort that included two walks in a 4-1 loss in the final to Aguilas. Jonathan Arauz was 7 for 26 from the top of the order for Chiriqui, representing Panama. Jeremy Rivera (2 for 11) and Jack Lopez (2 for 6) joined Duran getting playing time for Caguas, while Joey Meneses submitted a strong .261/.375/.478 line for Culiacan.

College baseball starts up today, which is of extra interest to Red Sox fans this year with a top five pick. Some players to watch: Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter at Vandy, Jud Fabian at Florida, Adrian Del Castillo at Miami, Jaden Hill at LSU, Matt McLain at UCLA.

Posted
Rocker and Leiter fill an org need and would be fast tracked to the bigs. Both of them have major league arsenals. I would probably lean towards Leiter due to pedigree. A college kid from a big program who grew up around baseball and has a big league arsenal, he's the surest bet to hit the bigs. The sox need pitching. If the dummies ahead of them leave Rocker or Leiter for the sox, they would be absolutely stupid to pass

Makes me wonder why either will last to the 4th pick.

In an attempt to get an idea of the chances of choosing an actual future star in the draft, I looked up the history of MLB drafts from 2000 to 2015 (I stopped there because players in '16 and beyond are just beginning to make an impact). I counted all pitchers and position players chosen, and noted whether they became at least good starting regulars in the bigs.

Pitchers were drafted most often in the Top 10: out of 160 picks, 87 were pitchers... and so far, 14 can arguably be considered aces. Of those 14, only 4 were the first pitchers picked in their year, including Price, Strasburg and Cole at Number 1 overall (Mark Prior, who had one great year before getting hurt, was a Number 2).

In comparison, 21 of the 73 position players picked in the Top 10 are considered studs in the majors. My ratings are conservative; for example, in '15 I counted Bregman the lone star over other regulars like Swanson, Benintendi, Kyle Tucker, Ian Happ, Brendan Rogers.

The math (if done correctly) reveals these odds: for teams picking a pitcher in the Top 10 -- finding an ace is at 16%. For those clubs picking a position player, the odds of choosing a great regular is 29%...

Overall, the odds of drafting a future ace pitcher in 16 years of Top 10 picks is 8%, while the odds of drafting a great regular is 18%.
