Fiddlesticks.

Well, his chance of coming back went down significantly when the Sox settled on Marwin Gonzalez for some reason....

Plawecki is on the IL. I don't think they have to DFA anyone yet. They'll have another week to decide about that.

The will also put Sale on the IL, right?

Yes.

Pawecki is already off the roster, but Sale is still on it. They also already added Perez and Hernandez. So add Gonzalez when the place Sale on the IL.

However, the still have Marcus Walden, Marcus Wilson and Austin Brice. I would have no issues with signing 3 people to replace these guys. Especially since I still think the Sox need a LHH outfielder, and another arm or two would not hurt...

Yeah, there are more guys they can get rid of if they need to. I think one of Brice or Walden is gone by the end of ST and replaced by another arm, even if it's just a prospect who starts in AAA.

Heyman said Red Sox still make most sense for JBJ.

So he has no clue “ possible” -or the Sox will have to move some salary to get him (not sure who it would be)

In a surprising move, the A’s have agreed to a one-year deal with free-agent righty Trevor Rosenthal, reports MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (via Twitter). The Boras Corporation client will earn $11MM in 2021 and presumably slot in as Oakland’s primary closer before returning to the open market next winter.
This seems a bit pricey.

1. It DOES make the most sense.

2. The Sox have the money, but would rather not go over just for him.

3. If everyone else passes on JBJ, doesn't that mean his market value just isn't there? Can they sign him for like 5 AAV?

JBJ can always see how much they are paying overseas...

The only salary they might be able to move is Vazquez. But then that creates another hole (and it might not actually be enough). And Ronaldo Hernandez, while a good pickup for waiver wire fodder, is NOT making the jump from A ball to MLB this year.

Notin they can get him no problem hell I’d lock him down for 3 years mysef knowing now Duran maybe hits 10 hr a year with low average and lesser skill than JBJ .3 years 21 million gets the player and puts CF issue to bed and hell no this is not an overpay he’s worth more here than anywhere else .I am tired of Bloom nickel and diming this player .JBJ will always scuffle have a red hot streak cool off and rake when we absolutely need him in the playoffs .I have said this for years he’s got the best arm I’ve ever seen in CF in Boston and he tracks a hard hit fly ball like he’s got a GPS in his ass .I love this player and hate this player at times but he’s unquestionably the best I’ve ever seen .21 million for the GOAT of a franchise in a pivotal position as CF is NOTHING .

Isn't there a limited amount that Japanese teams can pay foreign players?

He'd be better suited to sitting out and waiting for someone to get injured.

JBJ already has diminished defensive skills. He's not the same as he was 3-5 years ago. The eye test and defensive metrics both show he was about average the last 2 years. He's only getting older.

His bat is as hot and cold as ever there was one. Let's nit be fooled by a decent 60 game season, last year.

He's not worth $7M/1, let alone $21M/3.

I would pay him $5M/1, but we'd be right at the tax line with no flexibility to add pitching, later.

If we sign JBJ, I'll be shocked.

Note: before anybody goes off on me for not showing enough love for JBJ, nobody defended him more than I did over the last few slump-ridden seasons. NOBODY!

The guy WAS a great defender. I love defense up the middle. Personally, I think E Hern is a better defensive CF'er than the 2021 JBJ, and certainly will be by 2022.

We need pitching. Second is pitching. Third is pitching or maybe a 2Bman, so EHern cam play CF, and Cordero can platoon with Renfroe in LF.

Just say no to JBJ. He's not taking $3M/1, which is about all we have to spend, right now.

Maybe there is a reason JBJ has not signed, yet.

Either he is not as good as we think he is, or he and his agent think he is worth more than what any GM thinks he's worth.

(I wonder what his top offer has been, and if it is still on the table.)

He's worth 2/12, which I think is what I said the Sox should give him earlier in the offseason. If you're $1M over, that gives you enough wiggle room to either go for it at the deadline or trade off salary.

They can get back under if they want to.

Red Sox claimed RHP John Schreiber off waivers from the Tigers. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox placed LHP Chris Sale on the 60-day injured list.

Definitely the latter. I love the man, but until he can prove that he can hit consistently, teams will pass on him. Doesn't matter how good his defense is. Hard to see him starting anywhere at least, and he must be asking for starting CF money

@redsoxstats

Schreiber has had two short stints with the Tigers in 2019 and 2020 with a poor ERA but was 10% better than league average in FIP and xFIP. 26% K, 6% BB, and a strong minor league track record. He slings it from the side.

In 2019 between Double-A and Triple- A, he posted a 2.31 ERA in 53 appearances with a 11.1 K/9

GMs will pay for superb D and touch and go offense, but it's his D that has slipped to the point where his O comes under even more scrutiny.

After all, we paid him a lot to play in 2020, thinking he was still a big plus on defense.

He wasn't and isn't anymore.

Could be more of these types of players available in the next few days/weeks.

I gotta think some will be better than Brice, Wilson, Walden or even Brewer and Valdez.

I also wonder, if the Rays gave us something for Mazza & Springs, does Brice & Co. have trade value?

I would think maybe Valdez & Brewer do.

Maybe we can get more players to be named later.. How many are we owed now? Four?

Lmao awesome .Quesion why are we not seriously letting players like Thad Ward get a real look when he’s 24 has very good stuff and cost controled ? I hope to see Houck and Ward spend serious time on the Big club Thisbe year .All these PTBNL seem like a grab bag .

Houck? Yes. Ward? No.

Ward hasn't pitched since 2019 in High A ball. He's not going from A ball to the Majors after a season off...

Isn't it 3? Two from KC and 1 from NYM?

As long as the prospects we get do not need to be on the 40 man roster, keep 'em coming!

(We even have room for a couple on the 40, if Bloom would end his love affair with Brice.)

Yes, just because he's 24 does not mean he's ML ready.

He will likely start the year in AA, so there is a chance he could jump from there to the bigs much later this year, but he'd have to really turn up his game.

He also has several pitcher ahead of him-some of which are better than him.

Mata and Seabold will surely get their chances before Ward, unless they get hurt.

Houck is likely the #7, right now (#6 with Sale on the IL).

Whitlock is a fixture on the 26 man roster, so he may get a look before Mata, Seabold or Ward do.

There is also Gossett, Hart, Weber as well as Politi, German and Winckowski who could see a look before Ward.

Schreiber is like Chad Bradford, but without the effectiveness...
