Kickham, Triggs, Godley, Leyer, Lin, Puello, Peraza, Covey, Hall, Hart, Weber, Stock, Tapia, Aybar, Munoz, Grullon, Chatham, Mazza and Springs gone off the 40-man since the end of the year.

Puello, Hall, Hart, Weber, Munoz remain in org. Mazza/Springs pending DFAs.

19 down, 21 to go?

I bet they get to 39 guys on the roster at the end of Spring Training and hope to snag someone on the wire.

Certainly an idea.

Can't we just cut someone the day we add someone?

Gives us less to talk about.

PLUS WHAT IF THE GUY YOU WANT TO KEEP NEEDS TJ, BUT THEY GUY YOU DFA DOESN'T NEED IT. BAD MOVE BUCKO!

The bottom of our 40 man roster was atrocious at the end of the 2020 season- something I had hoped Bloom would have improved in his first year.

It seems like he has, this winter.

Here's my list of the bottom of the roster in order of who I wouldn't mind seeing traded or DFA'd:

DFA'd:

Wilson (if we add an OF'er)

Brice

DFA's/Traded:

Walden

Brewer

Traded:

Valdez

Chavis

Arauz

Wong ?

Taylor ?

We also kept Weber, Munoz & others (from 40 man to non 40 man).

Red Sox and Rays are close to swinging a trade that would send Jeffrey Springs and Chris Mazza to Tampa Bay for C Ronaldo Hernandez and another prospect.

@alexspeier

Both Mazza (RHP) and Springs (LHP) were recently cleared off the 40-man roster by the Red Sox to open spots for recently signed players. Hernandez, a 23-year-old, spent 2019 in High-A, hitting .265/.299/.397 with 9 homers in 103 games.

Chaim staying busy with the little moves.

There's also this rumor:

@ChrisCotillo

Source: Red Sox have some interest in reliever Ben Heller, who the Yankees released last week. 29-year-old has had injury issues but has been good (1.48 ERA in 24.1 IP since 2017) while healthy. Should be popular on FA market. Red Sox still looking at bullpen options.

Also, Catcher is a big weakness in the organization. If you can spin off guys like Springs and Mazza for a lottery ticket at C, I'm all for it.

Heller was never short on talent or stuff, just health. It makes tons of sense for the Sox to go after him. He’s got back end pen talent

@adamdberry

Source confirms this Rays-Red Sox trade is in the works. Other prospect going to Boston will be Nick Sogard, the Rays’ 12th-round pick in 2019.

And he would immediately leap to the top of the Sox catching prospect list by default, especially if Connor Wong cannot stick at catcher (which he struggled to in LA)...

Hernandez was a highly ranked prospect at one point, but both his hitting and fielding took a step back in 2019. He was on their taxi squad last year, so maybe there could be something there.

Rays fans are talking themselves into the deal because they like Springs k/9 and Hernandez was on the 40 man but probably not close enough to MLB to be called up anytime soon.

So Hernandez will have to be put on the Sox 40 man, right?

@IanCundall

Hernandez will be inside the top 20 when he makes his debut in the @SoxProspects rankings.

Wong is #21 currently.

Trading Mazza and Springs for the org's best C prospect seems like a coup to me.

The Rays did get Mejia in the Snell trade, though his stock has dipped since the Pads got him in the Hand trade. Mejia is regarded as more of a hitter than catcher, but when I saw him at Citi Field in '19 he was hacking at everything.

I was inferring that Hernandez would be the Sox' best C prospect. The Rays have other C's that are better than Hernandez.

@BaseballValues

The #Rays acquisition of RHP Chris Mazza ($0.2M trade value), LHP Jeffrey Springs ($0.0M) and cash ($0.1M) from the #RedSox in exchange for C Ronaldo Hernandez ($13.8M) and IF Nick Sogard ($0.1M) is rejected by our model as an overpay by Tampa Bay.

When fans return to Fenway, Sogard is going to think they're chanting his name every game in the seventh inning stretch song.

@BaseballValues

We're scratching our heads on this one. We know Hernandez's stock has fallen, and it's possible it's tanked more than is publicly known. But this still seems like a massive drop-off for a player who was a Top 100 prospect a year ago, considering both Mazza and Springs were DFA'd. One other possibility - this could be something of a two-part trade. We've seen that in the past, where two teams make two separate lopsided trades - one in favor of each team - and they ultimately even out when combined. We'll have to wait and see if that's the case here.
