Already hearing it quite a bit.

Yeah, well I haven't. I've switched to football, or do I have to wait until the end of the World Series? :P

He should be fine for the back end of the rotation.
The bar for our 5th slot is very low right now, but I am not optimistic that he can pitch to an ERA under 5, and that is just not acceptable.

I feel like over time, he will prove to have Big Dick Rick syndrome

I tend to think that bringing Cora back would be great for PR reasons.

Varitek for bench coach.

Roenicke was Cora's bench coach. Maybe firing Roenicke is not a good sign for Cora's return?

What do you have against Varitek?

In part, The Captain thing (which is why I like Crawford so much for calling him out on it). Also the way RS fans go ga-ga over him: He's not Fisk, (but ok, maybe a cut about Sammy White). And particularly his reputation as a tough guy, for going after A-rod, while completely suited up in body armor.

Your first two points are fair points. But, as for the last one, are you saying he shouldn't have gone after A-Rod? As a catcher, there's not much he could have done differently in that situation. I suppose he could have gone after him while he was hitting, so he wouldn't have his gear on. Hit a HR and then punch A-Rod while rounding third base. Is that what you're saying? That he picked the wrong situation to do it in?

Maybe he sees the same thing he saw in Tyler Glasnow, who had an ERA+ of 71 in 141 IP with Pittsburgh. Pivetta is a bit older at the time of the deal and lacks Glasnow's prospect pedigree, but he had an ERA+ of 78 in 396 IP with Philly. So expecting the same level of turnaround is probably unrealistic...

Plus he isn't Glasnow's size. I was 5'8" when I was 12, and I didn't pitch much, but when I did, they told me to wear my pants up, because showing your socks makes you look even taller and more intimidating

LOL Nothing like a Little League coach who delves into playing psychological games with 10-12 year old hitters...

It's a kids game that continually gets ruined by middle aged whack jobs.

Only thing sadder than that is the fact that I'm still 5'8" :(

I certainly concur. If Bloom were going to rehire Cora why go through all the drama of discharging RR the way they did? ESPN's Buster Olney is the leading advocate for Cora's return to Boston.

They originally brought Roenicke in because Alex Cora was a brand new manager and needed an experienced bench coach to coach him up. Maybe they believe that Cora would like to pick a different bench coach going forward? Maybe the Sox see Varitek as next year's bench coach? I don't think Cora was hired and then stated "I want Ron here."

I know.

Here in Chicago, we had that Jackie Robinson West Little League team that made a big splash in the Little League World Series 6 years ago, until someone discovered the kids were recruited from out of region. I will never figure out why someone would want to cheat to try to win the Little League World Series.

After that team was disqualified, Cardinal Blaise Cupich of Chicago tried to speak out in favor of the team by comparing them to the Super Bowl Champion Patriots, who had their own scandal, with Cardinal Cupich saying "Both teams cheated and only one was disqualified. As far as I can tell, the only difference is one team is black."

Which leads to a few interesting questions:

1) Had Cupich ever seen the Patriots? Yes, Brady, Gronkowski and Edelman were not black, but they did have other players. Lots of them.

2) Is he really trying to justify cheating by saying "But someone else did it?" Remember, this man is a Cardinal. Not a priest. Not a bishop. A Cardinal. As in , one step below the Pope.

And of course

3) It's the #$%^#!! Little League World Series! Why are you comparing it to the Super Bowl? Is race really the only difference here?!!?

Roenicke was Cora's AA manager back in 1997, but they did not work together again until Cora was hired by the Sox.

Also, he didn't have to play the race card. It drives me crazy when people play the race card for everything, especially for things that clearly didn't happen because of someone's race

Varitek played a key role in us winning two titles. Crawford was a colossal bust for us. I don't think he had the cred to be 'calling out' Varitek for anything.

I'd say the current ranking should be:

Fisk

Tek

Vaz

Geddy (though he's really a toss up with Vaz because of how good he was in 84 - 86)

Ferrell/White

Defensive stats are pretty much non-existent prior to 2003, but offensively the top two Red Sox catchers in OPS (200 PA min) are actually Victor Martinez and Mike Stanley. However, both played a lot of 1B and DH for the Sox, so I can see leaving them out. Martinez only caught 133 games and Stanley only caught 120 games...

VMart playes 1 f-r-e-a-k-i-n year. That's why I excluded him and Stanley. I did love Stanley while he was here though.

I reserve more 90's Sox talk for the next time SCM33 comes out of hibernation. He's always up for some good Tony Pena convo.

OK, no more Little League/Cupich rants...

Plus, the cardinals around my house are red... but those are just the competitive males (some even try to outpeck their own reflections in the window). Of course, you risk the wrath of the orangey-grey girl birds if you say the boys are more striking.

It's hard to say much about the guys who played before I was alive, since all I can do is look up stats. But my only question on that list would be Sammy White over Bill Carrigan. I have no idea who was better defensively. Both hit similarly. But I can give Carrigan some extra points for managing the team while he was the catcher...

Same boat. I can't say anything about Carrigan/White/Ferrell especially now that the Sox fired their team historian!!!

Nah. That's normal for birds. The females drop into the background and look at that colorful plummage while thinking "Ok, he is definitely doable, if he doesn't get eaten by a hawk first."
