Graterol was a Twin.

Fine, they wanted Graterol as part of the trade for Mookie to the Dodgers. Seems like the Dodgers would have only spared pitching prospects that were of lesser value than Wong and Downs.

Screaming quite loudly, yes indeed.

I'm not screaming, because I sense Mookie wasn't signing here, and know Price had to go; as much as this season sucked, imagine how much more fun it would've been having Price around folding all the cards, and mocking "Manager Ron" and "GM Brian" and "Officer Chaim".

I just think it's unrealistic to think Boston will be better off without the longterm "burden" of paying for a Hall of Famer in his prime. Betts may well be less productive in the second half of his contract, but the next six years sure would've been better watching him win more MVPs for the Red Sox than for another team.

I assumed that when the Twins and Graterol got involved at all, it spoke volumes about exactly how available some of the Dodger pitching prospects like Dustin May and Josiah Gray were...

I don't really disagree. Mookie is a huge loss. And if he stays healthy, that deal will only hurt the Dodgers in its latter years. If I was a Dodger fan I would be thrilled about the deal. At the same time I understand the Red Sox balking at the risk.

The Twins seem to have done well by getting Maeda.

Kenta Maeda? The guy who was on he short list of free agent pitchers I said were better options than Price? That Kenta Maeda? ;)

As much as I think the Sox were right to trade Betts, I live in a world where that became a foregone conclusion with DD's reckless spending on starting pitching. Betts was on my very short list of players I wanted signed to a mega-extension...

Yes, the very same. He was a great pick, in hindsight.

Actually not sure why the Dodgers let him go...

Here's the thing. Even if DD hadn't done that reckless spending and our payroll was in much better position, it doesn't change the fact that it's a monumental and arguably irrational risk to sign anyone for 12 years and $400 million.

To get Betts.

They also clearly liked Graterol and revised the deal to keep him once Boston bowed out on that iteration.

(Wait!! Is this a trade where the Dodgers dealt a pitcher and not for prospects or a salary dump?!)

I think you're just trying to save John Henry some money :)

Yes to the question. I guess it could happen in a 3 team trade involving a young Hall of Famer like Betts.

A question for Red Sox fans is why didn't we just take Maeda? The Dodgers would have been in the same position except for not getting Graterol or giving up Downs.

I assume Bloom wasn't that high on Maeda.

Maybe he should have been. Maeda could have been controlled for 4 years at $12.5mill total. That's a crazy good bargain...

Even better than that-the Dodgers kicked in money!

I wanted us to get Maeda with Verdugo, but I think Bloom wanted prospects.

Oh notin now I can't help myself - a softball lobbed perfectly into my minimal power zone. Almost everybody on here is trying to save JH some money. "Talksox Forum" has fiscal soundness as a top priority! lol

LOL I’m guessing it’s time to retire if you’re missing those easy lobs by that much. Might be time to consider shuffleboard...

the Boston Red Sox have a budget. does anyone not believe this to be fact?

Yes, they have a budget. It's why they've been laying off office staff recently.

Do you ever get the feeling that the whole world is a carnival , and we are the marks ?

I'm pretty cynical about a lot of things, but I'm not quite that cynical.

I would much rather see the Sox keep these employees on their payroll and not pay the players so much.

In the recent CC interview, Mookie explains how the Red Sox had an understanding with him that after he turned down their offer they'd try to trade him. It doesn't sound acrimonious at all, and basically confirms a mutual parting (for those who suspect Mookie was planning not to re-sign in Boston, no matter what).

Did you hear or read the part about how CC picks a player on the opposing team to hate (for no reason) so that he can build up his hatred/intensity against that team? That's his explanation for why he hated JBJ. I guess doofus-ness just runs rampant on that team.
