I thought the rumor was he slept with Manny's wife

Hahaha. If that happened I'm not sure OCab would still be alive.

I heard something about Foulke's wife.

In any case, I'm pretty sure there is nothing confirmed.

We need to delegate someone to do some research into stories about this. Relying on the vagaries of our memories isn't going to do it. (All I found was a reminder that it was Cabrera who called Manny out and prevented him from taking a day off during the playoffs.)

I heard Foulke's wife slept with Manny's wife after Cabrera introduced them to each other. But I welcome better rumors.

The widely-reported stories about his behavior in Chicago were all about his selfish play, like repeatedly (and impolitely) calling the press box during games to have scoring calls on his errors changed, throwing teammates under the bus, etc. And as believable as all that stuff is, it's not like I can prove it even a syllable of it. But all these stories about domestic abuse and infidelity are even further buried in gossip, speculation, and internetuenndo (And yes! I just made up that portmanteau!! Feel free to use it) starting to make me wonder if a lot of you were just watching "Real Housewives of the Boston Red Sox"...

I don't think that would be enough to get OCab gone-unless he was in the room at the time.

These rumors are certainly more fun than "Theo's love affair with compensation picks"...

I heard Theo cheated on his wife with the compensation picks...

This is not "vagaries of memories;" it is a correct recollection of what the rumors were back then.

It may be hard to prove the rumors were correct.

I do not think there were any rumors of abuse. If I'm wrong, then my memories can be called vague.

i did not just start the domestic abuse rumor. Doesn't make much difference now I guess though. i just need a little more Rick Burleson.

I guess there were two separate rumor mills back then, apparently with no overlap.

I would say that that is quite likely based simply upon what I have observed over the past year. Personally, I could not care less about Orlando Cabrera right now. i think that in general most people think that he wasn't that nice of a guy. Works for me. He helped us win a title. Other than that, he is simply a footnote in history for me. A piece of trivia.

Never heard that. Heard Manny’s wife forced him to quit on the team because he knocked up a waitress.

And he bounced around from team to team for the rest of his career. He was great for 2004 and that’s all that matters.

Sox would’ve still won it if Pokey played SS for the rest of the year. With Nomar, it was addition by subtraction. Guy went from legend to “remember that guy” overnight.

The winter meetings are underway. Lets go after Zach Wheeler's remaining contract with the Phillies. They are anxious to make a trade where the trading partner would pick up the bulk of the contract. The Sox are in a position to do that both from a need and the wherewithal to do it. Would give us a #1 or #2 starter we need for a fairly short contract.

The new rumor is the Phillies are really not trying to move Wheeler...

I'm not sure if Wheeler was on the market this year that they'd sign him for 4/94M. Wheeler is only a year younger than Sale, so he's not as young as most people think he is. I think it depends on how much the Phillies would cover, but I don't see the Sox making that type of deal right now.

The cost for getting Wheeler would go way down (perhaps to zero), if we took McCuthen, too. (Not saying I'd do it.)

The real rumor is that they need a f'n GM.

So, we'd go over the lux tax. Not even get a guy that can play CF or 2B and we'd piecemeal the relief corps again just to get Wheeler? That doesn't sound like a Red Sox move to me.

No, I'd expect Philly to kick in enough money to keep us under the tax line by enough to add a RP'er or two.

If they are willing to kick in money for Wheeler, they most certainly would be for A.M.

The trade values site has Wheeler + McCutchen as a net -8. In theory, we could ask them to add 2 RP'ers to bring the value to zero and give up nothing for the 4 of them.

(I was thinking AM could play RF and Verdugo CF, but his D has dropped off a lot. You are right, it makes little sense to take AM.)

Oh that's not a rumor.

I filledout my application. But so far, no response. No idea why they're stalling on me. Clearly they need to get their butts in gear and make a f'n decision..

Or, we could forget about Wheeler altogether.

Famous denials followed by trades are not uncommon.

Trade values accepted this deal:

Duran, Chavis & Groome

for

Wheeler, Kingery, Eflin, Romero & $3M.

If they are saying they would not accept Babe Ruth for Wheeler, either that means they are upping the trade value or they have reached the point where they refuse to make deals for corpses more than 70 years into the decaying process. Either way, it makes the deal very difficult for the Sox, which is not something they need to consider for Zack Wheeler, who is at best the #4 starter in a rotation made solely of guys named Zachary...

McCutchen was a minus defender in LF last year. The roster would have Beni/JD/Cutch all who are minus defenders IMO. Tough to do that. They really just need a glove first CFer, like a JBJ type.

Here's the available CFers:

Albert Almora CF

Jackie Bradley Jr. CF

David Dahl CF / LF / RF

Delino DeShields Jr. CF

Jarrod Dyson CF

Brett Gardner CF / LF

Brian Goodwin CF / LF

Billy Hamilton CF

Jon Jay CF / LF

Jake Marisnick CF

Haruki Nishikawa CF

Kevin Pillar CF / RF

Danny Santana CF / 1B

George Springer CF / RF

Bubba Starling CF

Michael Taylor CF - (ED: oops signed with Royals)

Obviously, you wouldn't sign Dahl to be the CFer, so you'd have to move Verdugo to CF. The only way they bring Dahl in is if they move Beni and Dahl plays LF. That doesn't really solve the CF issue.

Pillar or Gardner may be the best economical short term options if you just need a bridge to Duran.
