The Hunger Games: MLB2020

How do 7 players and two staff test positive for COVID? These are young guys who have a responsibility to be careful but probably aren't. Is it the nature of guys this age to be careful? We are seeing the answer. The team management can do only so much to create a safe environment, after that it is on the players and it appears too many of them don't take this seriously and that could well end the season. I had hopes the 60 games would be played but the Marlins experience may lead to an early shutdown.

Let's say you're your 20s, strong and virile, and make six to seven figures playing a sport. And one night after a game in Atlanta, you and your teammates visit an establishment noted as "the Southeast's most renowned gentlemen's club and home of the legendary CheetahGirls"...

If there's one thing we've learned from this, it's how the hell can anybody expect to play football in the fall?
Posted
it was a serious question.

Now.... Admittedly, i've been crazy busy + work this summer, but i hadn't heard of any players dying, and almost none getting even really really i'll.

I get, as well as most, the unique risk of passing bodily fluids with athletes.

It just seems to me to be the classic risk assessment analysis.

Like with most teachers.

Agreed, and it's incredible that anyone thought it possible. That the NCAA has its head in the sand is not surprising (that's where they leave it to rest when it's not up their butt). But I foolishly expected more from the NFL. Both seem to have adopted the strategy of "hope", which is fine ... as long as everything goes well (which it isn't and won't). I'm trying to imagine any semblance of social distancing in, say, the middle of the line.

There is definitely still time for things to improve. I personally don't think they will improve enough, but at some point you have to stop acting like everything is normal

Not sure why you expected more from the NFL. The NCAA schools at least have other means for making money. Tuition. Donations from alumni. If the NFL is not playing football, what else do they have?

So.... You want the season shut down?

Are you watching the games? If so, I'd say that's a bit inconsistent?

My question was a serious one, as I've been exceptionally busy this summer working and doing major work on my property.

You answer with "dolt."

ok.... I was simply asking if any player has died or become gravely ill... i.e. hospitalized for any length of time. If so, WHO and for HOW LONG?

Pretty simple questions.

I've been clear. I want the season to continue, but from what Ive seen with players, it does not appear that the mlb and individual teams are doing a great job insuring that players are social distancing. You've seen the videos of guys being mock hand shakes & such, without masks & in each other's faces. Just dumb, but understandable for young guys.

I've been clear that I want the mlb to continue this season, but that requires extreme caution.

Again... are you watching the games? Do you want the season to continue? and do you understand that some are likely to be infected? I'd add.... Do you think these young men should have the right to return under strict guidelines ^ mandates?

Did you expect some might contract the virus?

I did.

Then comes the question... How sick did we expect most will get?

Finally.... Is it a reasonable risk for these young men to take to make 10's of millions?

That is up to them, their families, the league, and cities.

So.... Dolt? ok. Whatever floats your boat.

It seems to me that many of the players are having trouble focusing on the game . The danger has to be constantly on their minds . And the whole spectacle is becoming ludicrous, what with cardboard " fans " in the stands , fake noise , extended playoffs, etc. I think it might be best to just throw in the towel on this season .

With all due respect, I don't think ANYBODY is acting like everything is normal.

Most Americans are returning to work under strict guidelines.

CONTACT SPORTS are unique in this age of Covid reopening. Perhaps football is the unique considering the extreme contact?

Baseball? Seems they should be able to keep it at a reasonable risk, but having a 22 year old, I know that these young guys have a hard time taking it as serious as they should. If they are in the workplace... clubhouse, there needs to be strict oversight. Not sure if that's happening?

In hotels? Does anybody believe these young guys are being vigilant?

Sure. Some are, but we can't control all behavior, and I don't think it is the job of an employer.

These are tough times, and most conduct is "risk v reward."

Even the most cautious I know, are getting together. even 3 who I know, who are amongst THE MOST EXTREME social distances & Covid crazed, have been to small gatherings. Mostly outdoors, but with their guards down, it's surprising what THEY will allow THEMSELVES to do....

i.e. hug, bro hug, sit too close outdoors, etc.

Anyway.... football is certainly a concern. No doubt about it.

MLB? They need to tighten oversight!

(I really didn't. I was just trying to be kind. ... Then again, I held out a small particle of hope that, given what the NBA came up with, the NFL might consider a 'bubble' format, something the NCAA of course cannot do. That shred of hope vanished as soon as they adopted the 'oh well, something will surely work out' policy.). One good thing about this pandemic (can't believe I just said that), is it will, and in some cases already has, exposed the ruinous amounts of money most athletic departments end up losing.

Imagine being a teacher and trying to enforce wearing masks and social distancing with pre-teens all day, every day?

This sprint season may be the best time for the Red Sox to tank, but the next draft may be the worst to have the Number One pick, considering no one knows if college or high school sports will even happen before then. Hopefully, the wily Bloom has been monitoring some Little League ace pitcher with a mustache the past five years.

Shut the f*** up. Seriously. Keep the political s*** out of here. It's not that hard. Stop acting like a petty child

I was responding to 75, who happens to be a teacher. Maybe if you were a teacher like 75 or Moon or Kimmi, and could relate to the task facing them, you could better appreciate how connected everything is. Meanwhile, others on this thread post about college sports and the NCAA, which are also totally dependent on whether schools reopen. This isn't political s***; it's reality.

In fairness Thunder, I think it's a fair question, and a reasonable parallel. I'm not totally sure I understand what you are asking, but I think you are asking if I believe the mlb is capable of maintaining a HEALTHY WORKPLACE? Can they hold players accountable to maintain social distancing and wear masks?

If this is what you were asking, I would say YES. Tough, but I think they can. Will there be outbreaks? SURE!

* But.... Some who are arguing otherwise are STILL WATCHING THE GAMES? Right? So, they implicitly support the season going on.

To answer his general question, I do believe MOST people can return to work, if all reasonable precautions are taken, most need to return to work.

Are there risks? Ok course! Is the death rate for healthy young men extreme? NO. Scientifically speaking, NO.

Should I dictate to a young MLB player who is generally speaking EXCEPTIONALLY HEALTHY, and at an EXCEPTIONALLY LOW RISK of death or even being hospitalized, that this young mlb player, with perhaps no other means of supporting himself, that his season MUST BE SHUT DOWN?

My answer? NO! I sure as hell don't have the right to tell this kid he is an idiot for taking this, IN MY OPINION, "very reasonable risk."

JUST AS, I believe, neither I or the government has THE Constitilutional RIGHT to close down any business, except in cases of EXTREME DANGER or RISK. For MOST citizens, going to work does not constitute an "extreme risk" in most counties in this country. Cities? Sure. Some cities are still under "extreme risk." BUT EVEN CITIES in NY, NJ, MA, Conn, & others all over country, restaurants and other businesses are opening.

The way the mlb is doing this, they seem to be taking pretty decent precautions?

So.... should they be playing? I think so. Unless of course the Sox just keep sucking balls.

As for teachers. Yes. I am a teacher, and argued vociferously for schools in our ZERO COVID DEATHS county to open with precautions. I literally just found out that I lost that argument, and we will open with distance learning. I don't agree with the district not following the science of almost NO RISK WHATSOEVER HERE, but that is not my call. We will see what teachers have to say when austerity measures are instituted to deal with devastated budgets? In our situation, I believe we are decimating budgets because of hysteria. OTHER DISTRICTS in HOTSPOTS are a different case altogether.

The MLB is a different ballgame altogether.

p.s. I do honor Thunder's request to keep politics out of this, but in this case, & I could be wrong, the gentleman was pressing me on a reasonable parallel? IDK.

Talking about other sports is acceptable because it relates to what the MLB is doing and is based a lot off of what the MLB is doing and how it responds to the Marlins outbreak. Talking about politics has nothing to do with any of that. This place has rules, which have long since been ignored by you and countless others, but most of us don't give a s*** about politics and don't participate in the political thread. Now that baseball is back, talk baseball here and talk politics there. It's really that simple. This is a baseball forum.

Thanks for making it your business to announce to the forum that it's ok to discuss college, but when educators see parallels to middle school or elementary school in a thread about the pandemic, that's too "political". I never realized two teachers weren't allowed to post to each other about their profession... until I was called childish by someone with the maturity to type "shut the f*** up."

We're not talking about colleges reopening, we're talking about college sports, or at least I have been. College sports leaders have flat out said that they are watching the MLB restart model the closest since it is the only major sport not playing in a bubble as playing college football (or any other college sport) is not feasible. Nothing about any of that is political. What you did was import a discussion about opening schools from the political thread, thereby contaminating this thread with political information. The tone of your comment to Sox75 is obvious to anybody that has been paying attention here over the last month. You made it political by saying "Imagine being a teacher and trying to enforce wearing masks and social distancing with pre-teens all day, every day?" We all know how Sox75 feels about schools, and we all know that you feel differently. Leave it in the other thread. There's no reason to bring that into a discussion about the baseball season and whether or not it will get shut down because of this Marlins outbreak or other factors. It literally has nothing to do with it. You teachers can argue all you want about your schools reopening in the COVID Anything Goes Thread, because you guys have done a great job of making that discussion as political as humanly possible over the last month. Just keep it in there. This is a BASEBALL forum first. Some of us just want to talk baseball/sports in general. I don't know why that's so hard to understand. We have a designated thread for your political shenanigans. Either comply or go away

It was a joke to 75, because I'm actually on his side about schools. But I'm also glad he and Kimmi won't be going back right away and will be safe. I know you agree, too, but I hope you get to go back to live classes and live football soon. I really believe this MLB summer, and whether they finish, is actually a test case for a lot of what happens in the fall. I hope they make it to September... and not just so the Sox can reset and spend more money. Take it easy.

I'll take it easy when people around here start following the rules. Kimmi, the nicest poster here, left and refuses to post here again unless the mods come in and clean up all the political s*** that has leaked into virtually every nook and cranny of this place. That to me is a travesty.

Why go somewhere else when you can just do it all here? Gee, people on a baseball forum that don't want to talk politics must be the crazy ones

It is done deliberately. Instigating is some people's favorite pastime.

Again, a thread on Will MLB Suspend the Season is 100% about the virus and various responses to it. It is also bound up in whether other sports, including college sports, will be able to begin their seasons. I'm happy to hear what anyone working in academia is planning to do (whatever their politics), since, being retired, I don't have to make such a decision myself. No one is 'breaking the rules' by dealing with these issues.

Yeh,

I honestly didn't even take his comment as provoking me.

There was a comment about keeping mlb YOUNG MEN vigilant in social distancing, directly connected to the mlb outbreaks....

I TOTALLY GET why Thunder has become disgusted with the politics, so I understand why is sensitive to anything remotely political.

Interesting segue .... We just found out today that our school will ONLY open with distance learning.

THIS is killing kids .. ...

Imagine all the Fall sports that will be cancelled .....

Imagine if you are a senior, borderline on making the cut for college football? Soccer?

I'm afraid that feelings are going to rule the day in college sports? That is what ruled the day on our school, in a county with ZERO Covid Deaths. It certainly wasn't the science. Other districts? Hot spots? I get that.... But ... OUR COUNTY? Jesus.... If sports can be s*** down in my ZERO Covid county, it can happen anywhere.

I sincerely hope that wasn't political!

Much love and MAD RESPECT to Thunder!

Your point is very much taken!

According to Ken Rosenthal and C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic, Mike Moustakas (illness) and Nick Senzel (illness) have filed an appeal asking to be allowed to return.

This is the situation that teammate Nick Castellanos was referring to in his postgame Zoom call with reporters late Tuesday night, when he expressed frustration that both Moustakas and Senzel had passed the necessary COVID-19 tests but weren't going to be allowed back onto the field until at least Thursday. Cincinnati has gone 0-3 since the two players self-reported symptoms on Sunday morning. Rosenthal and Rosecrans write that Moustakas and Senzel have been deemed "ineligible to play as MLB grapples with the fallout of a reported outbreak among the Marlins." Their case will be heard by a joint committee panel of league and union representatives on Wednesday morning.

Hitler took over the National Socialist German Workers' Party, and he was just advocating for Getman workers and the little guy.

Stalin was just a member of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, and wanted "reform" for the Russian workers.

Seriously.

I understand the occasional mistake. But keep the politics on the political thread. It’s getting obvious that you respect nobody’s wishes that way...
