One bad thing about no season - it guarantees Mookie does not return.

Mookie gets his year of service time and becomes a free agent regardless of actual play. But with no season, the Sox cannot reset, which kills any chance to bring Mookie back

And then there’s the Dodgers, unlikely to let Mookie walk without ever donning a uniform. Although signing him could have ramifications on their ability to retain a couple of their own stars...

I didn’t know that about the reset. That sucks.

Was thinking about that too.... I’m kind of chalking it up as he is gone, and if he somehow comes back it’s a bonus. I don’t see how a season is likely to happen with Tampa closing their facilities to players. This is hockey but I’m sure it’s gonna happen in baseball if it hasn’t already. Either they go ahead with the season, and expect there will be Covid going around (until there is a vaccine there’s just no way around it) or they shut the season down.

I have not been to Fenway since Mookie's career started, but how is he treated by fans? I know most fans absolutely LOVE him, but anyone ever hear or hear about epithets in his direction?

I was wondering in light of the news about Torii hunter and Adam Jones, and what we all knew about Carl Crawford and what someone (you?) said about Jim Rice on another thread. Anyone ever hear fans saying anything derogatory about Betts?

If anything like that ever happened to Betts, it obviously would make him coming back a pure fantasy, season or not...

And the players voted against the proposal.

Looking more and more like no abbreviated season...

Didn't MLB just respond by implementing the 60-game season? Again, the owners' stupidity is beyond me. They COULD have offered 64 games, and for that, the union would have given up its right to file a grievance, PLUS they would have started off the 2021 CBA fight on a good note. INSTEAD, they now have declared war (how does that help?), and risk having to fight a grievance, which it seems the Union is in a pretty good position to win (although even having to go through that legal battle is a loss--probably for both sides). WHY DO THIS? Because they didn't want 3 or 4 more games on the schedule?

9:26pm: The players are indeed expected to respond favorably to the league’s requests regarding reporting timeline and health and safety protocols, Jeff Passan of ESPN reports on Twitter. So long as the final points can be tidied up, it seems the resumption of play will be underway within a week.

Wow! "Within a week." Do they mean the regular season will start within a week?

I think there will be some resumption of spring training. Actual regular season might be closer to late July...

No, the players must report within a week. The season is due to start somewhere around July 26, provided it is not derailed by the coronavirus.

The owners' last proposal, which was rejected, was for a 60 game season at prorated salaries with the following concessions:

1. Universal DH for two years.

2. A guaranteed $25 million in playoff pools.

3. $33 million in forgiven salary advances.

4. Overall earning for players which amounted to 104% of prorated salary.

5. Removing expanded postseason in 2021.

So, the players rejected a 60 game season with the above concessions from owners, only to be given a mandated 60 game season without the above concessions, just so they could file a grievance, which they will undoubtedly lose. Not to mention this does nothing to help restore relationships between the two sides, and it does nothing to help restore the faith in fans. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Per Rotoworld, players agree to report by July 1...

I don't see any reason why the players would not agree to report by July 1. They want as many games as possible. In fact, they were pleasantly surprised that the owners are still going with 60 games rather than 48 or 50.

Apparently, the two sides are still hashing out a few of the safety protocols.

Well, if they are reporting in Florida/Arizona, that might not end well, given the Phillies and Blue Jays camps shutting down this past weekend. I say bring them all up to New England. Life up here is almost back to normal and guess what? Everybody wears masks

I think there was a recommendation/suggestion that teams would finish spring training at their actual home parks, although no idea whatever happened with that...

I think the teams are planning on doing the training in their own city / ballpark.

I’ll consider that a confirmation...

I'm concerned that playing in front of no fans in the current COVID hot spots is going to be an unfair advantage. The Rays and Marlins play in front of no fans every single night.

Beautiful. Much better option

^ everyone but Toronto.

There’s a question if Canada will allow them to do much of anything.

How should I respond? What would Brian Boitano do?

He’d make a plan and he’d follow through. That’s what Brian Boitano would do.

I'd love to get back to the rhythm of listening to baseball (wait ... is my radio still working? Maybe I should replace the tubes.). But here's $100 saying the season will never get done. (Well, I don't have $100, because ... I forget why ... but still. ...)
