Meanwhile, as players were packing their belongings at spring-training facilities, the Major League Baseball Players Association sent out a memo Monday morning trying to answer questions and qualm their fears.

The players were told that if they leave spring training, they will receive an $1,100 per week living allowance until at least April 9 from the players union, with the belief clubs will then start picking up expenses until the shutdown lasts.

It would cover only players on the 40-man roster and non-roster invitees who were free agents after last season and finished the 2019 season on a 40-man roster or injured list.

This clause isn't listed with the CBA posted online. Wonder where it comes from.

What's called "paragraph 11," quoted above in one of my posts. It's the one ESPN was quoting (if you search 'emergency' in the CBA, you'll eventually find it.)

I have friends that live in Italy and Spain. The accounts of what is happening there are horrific Italy has a brilliant health system. They simply cannot keep up with the amount of people than need ICU beds. Spain is going the same way (well everywhere is), and the US response was so slow, so inadequate, so political that the spread will be almost impossible to stop.

Unless a miracle is found and quick, you can forget sport this year, this thing will wreak havoc across the US.

If you have even a tickle of a cough, or the slightest sense you might not be well, stay away from all your elderly loved ones (or anyone with bad health) for at least 14 days.

It's scary stuff.

I'm really hoping that it's not going to be as bad as you are saying.

I would never spoil the ending of a movie for my kids.

I spent all of last July 4th on Martha's Vineyard explaining to my kids how Jaws isn't a scary shark and that he was just trying to give everyone kisses.

Aww, poor kids. I hope they're not afraid of the ocean.

I was once in the water about thigh/hip deep off the North Carolina coast and saw a shark swim past me about 5 feet away. Scared the crap out of me!

That is May 25th! I would take the over on that bet all day long. Only shot I think they would have at that is to roll right into regular season games immediately upon opening the stadiums again. If we learn enough from China, SK, Italy, all the countries that are farther downstream than we are to suggest that there is little risk on the back side of the bell curve for contagion then maybe they make May 25th.

There will likely be a good deal of pressure to get back up and running across the entire economy as so much of the economy is going to get hit in this. So many people are contractors or part of the gig economy and they are really going to take it on the chin.

One of my friends does marketing promotions. She has had three of her promotions canceled just now with no new jobs coming up. Everybody is canceling everything.

From everything I'm hearing, it doesn't sound like May 25th is realistic at all. Unfortunately.

Calling Italy's Health System Brilliant is a joke. Also, they have the oldest population in Europe. The average age of their deceased is very old. Hopefully, the US system can surpass the lofty standards set in Italy.

MLB does have a doomsday clause and at this point, they meet the criteria. If the season is canceled, the MLB will only have to pay players for the portion of ST attended and that’s about it
Hmmm. This could get interesting. Would player service dates be tolled?

Italians have a higher mortality rate for this virus than do the other Europeans. Also I believe the number of smokers in both Italy and Spain is much higher than here.

The seven Bay Area counties have just went into lock down mode-no one is supposed to leave their house except for essential activities. Its about time they did this-but it is short of what is needed. Practically the whole country should follow suit.

The paragraph that addresses that is pretty damn vague, seeming giving the commissioner license to do what he wants.

Ah the stupidity of ignorance. Always a delight to come up against. You don't have to take my word for it, we could always listen to the World Health Organisation:

Here, if learning is something you're even capable of educate your ignorant idiocy away: https://www.who.int/healthinfo/paper30.pdf

Hopefully the US with its 37th ranked healthcare system and its 28 million uninsured will indeed meet the lofty standards of the Italian system, because if it doesn't there will be a catastrophe.

Which is missing the point. The WHO have said 1% will die. You don't need to have the 6% of the Italian numbers. I'm sure you can work out 1% of the US population and seeing as your response to this has been f***ing catastrophically bad up until recently, I think that number is very hopeful for the US.

The point is comparing Italy to the United States is apples to oranges. The Italian situation is different from ours. Every country has had to make adjustments to a rapidly changing situation. How ever this turns out I will always trust American crisis management over anyother.

Of course you will, it's bred into you. The point about comparing the Italian situation is how utterly rampant the virus was before real steps were taken. Just like in the US. Hopefully we won't see the same outcome, although I am not hopeful.

Some people have been rooting for a disaster for their own political agenda. Having been involved in crisis management and natural disaster relief at both the state and federal level for both democratic and Republican administrations I know both make mistakes but I also know both do their best under difficult circumstances despite the naysayers most of whom have never been in such decision-making or advisory positions themselves.

lol. I'll let you know when i'm running for prez. in the meantime, the actual/real/sworn-in president of the United States of America is in the decision making position. to continue to state "we have this under control" is f***ing idiotic. no matter what political platform he currently associates himself with.....
