Two openers to start the year? I know games are spread out more in April, so maybe they can get by with just 4 starters (one being an opener)?

yeah, we can get by with 4 for a bit. i have a feeling there will be big chunks of this season where we have 2 openers each time through the rotation....

@alexspeier

Roenicke says Sale’s season-opening delay is entirely due to his recovery from pneumonia. Says he’s doing great with buildup of his arm now that he’s healthy. Sox want him to get 6 starts this spring before he pitches in regular season.

So you think Clay is just an opener now?!?!?!??!?

@OverTheMonster

Usually you can manipulate the rotation a bunch in the beginning of the year because of off days, but the Red Sox start off with eight games in a row this year.

I bet Eovaldi has a better market than JD if they are both healthy. JD is very limited in where he can play (DH only cuts out 50% of trading partners). He's also overpaid for what he'd get on the open market today. I think you move Eovaldi because of injury concerns and the need to reduce payroll for future signings and extensions.

Yuck.

Honestly are there any pitchers left who don't have injury concerns?

Roenicke says Sox could consider opener for two spots while Sale is on injured list, but team interested to see if someone emerges for a starting spot.

Left in FA this year? No. I'm not advocating moving Eovaldi today, just that it could be a midseason deal.

No I meant 'any pitchers left', period.

Strictly a guess, but I think if he pitches well they keep him.

We do need some starting pitchers for 2021. And by today's standards, 17 million a year for 2 more seasons is not huge.

I bet Bloom thinks he could find a better way to spend 17M.

bingo. the bad news is that just as all of us are finally learning/figuring out how this all works - there will be a new CBA soon and we will be back to square one of not knowing anything.

Likely so. But then we'll be able to hurl juvenile obscenities at each other for failing to understand something none of us knows a thing about.

Before he does that he just has to find someone willing to take on Eovaldi's remaining 40M or so at the deadline...

If he's solid and healthy, there could be a market for him. If not, they are stuck with him.

If he's solid and healthy, you ride a horse at the top of the rotation. Question (someone could start a poll): who do you predict will have the most innings pitched in the next three years: Sale, Eovaldi or Price? I rank them in the order I listed.

@alexspeier

With the return of a 15-day injured list for pitchers, and the ability to backdate spring training injuries to 3/23, the earliest Sale could be activated would be 4/7 vs Tampa Bay.

Why ride a horse if you're out of contention (which was my original assertion)?

The Red Sox still have to field a team, and a viable product, and good starting pitchers are the first priority no matter when they're ready to start competing again. Fans might accept trading one great position player if they know he's going to leave anyway -- and this remains to be seen -- but the Nation will never accept clearing the roster like the Marlins or Orioles. There's no need to hit rock bottom like small market teams if you're Boston, especially at the risk of losing your constituency.

Once the tickets are sold, they don't have to field a viable product especially if they are selling to the fans that they need to rebuild the farm.

The Red Sox NATION has already accepted fire sales. Have you forgotten 2012? 2014?

Tickets AREN'T selling well though.

Personally, I'm rooting for Eovaldi to have a good season, but not so they can trade him.

No, but those clearance sales didn't include beloved fan favorites who were stars (except for maybe Lester, a guy fans respected for what he endured to become a homegrown ace). The Punto trade got rid of a disaster in Crawford, and complainers -- chicken-and-beer boy Beckett and I don't-like-Sunday-nights AGon. Of all the vets the Sox dealt in '14, most were on the downside: Lackey, Peavy, Dubront, Gomes, Vic. Andrew Miller turned out to be the prize, but wasn't yet a stud.

The '14 purge helped win a ring -- four years later -- with staff additions like Porcello, Rodriquez, Kelly and Hembree. But besides Lester, none of the guys the Sox gave up were missed, bemoaned or as valuable as Mookie, or as prime-time special as JD's bat or JBJ's glove (assuming they're the next regulars to be moved).

No way -- Gonzalez was a good hitter in Boston, but JD Martinez has led the majors in RBI since he became a Red Sox, and has also had a positive effect on the batting order off the field, as a player-coach.

Bloom better get more than Allen Webster or Rubby De La Rosa for JD... especially since he won't be attached to an albatross like AGon was with Crawford or Mookie with Price.

Adrian Gonzalez 2011: 6.2 fWAR

JD Martinez 2019: 3.2 fWAR

Beckett 2011: 3.8 fWAR

JBJ 2019: 1.4 fWAR

Beckett was a postseason hero and a frontline starting pitcher. AGon was being lauded as the 2nd best offensive weapon and a great defensive wiz at 1b. People on here were freaking out prior to the AGon trade with the Padres when they thought Theo botched it. We may not think of him fondly now, but he was of more importance to that team than JD is to this one.

To be fair, AGon and Beckett were traded in late August of 2012, and their fWAR's for that year were much lower. AGon ended at 3.0 for the year and Beckett at 2.0.

To be fair, we don't know what JBJ or JD's fWAR will be this ASB either.
