Spoke with an Infectious Disease friend who says they don’t expect the heat and sun to limit this as we have zero immunity and zero prior exposure to it. The ID community is expecting half of all Americans to get it. This is going to be an arduous summer

At what point do they just stop ST activities?

Jacko, should I go see the Sox in West Palm this weekend, or just stay home?

We shouldn't be having fans in close quarters at this point. But I would also take advice from the local responses. If there is a state of emergency in Florida or if the schools are closed in the area, then you shouldn't congregate in that area.

Thank you. I value your advice.

Florida is a hot bed for this outbreak if they don't take measure now. Disney is suppose to make an announcement today.

Florida also has many older population. They don't need this.

My fantasy baseball league comprises a bunch of old guys as the league enters its 30th season. The annual auction has always been a big social event but because of the coronavirus this year we may auction remotely instead of meeting in one location. The old-school league only last year moved to a fully online auction. In previous years all bids were made orally (including one owner via Skype from Puerto Rico the past half-decade).

780 MLB players. I think it is a safe bet that someone gets it. Would that be enough to shut down the season? I would hope that they would quarantine that team. There isn't a lot of physical contact in baseball.

No, but they do toss the ball around. (I keep thinking that with my various tennis groups--how do we possibly not get exposed to every cold/virus/flu that anyone on the court has?). And they do share locker rooms.

The ball is changed more frequently than once per AB, and only the defense touches the ball. If a team gets an infected player, that team should be quarantined, but I see no reason why they can't continue to play the games. There is no physical interaction between teams except tag plays.

My over 70's softball league continues to play regular games but doesn't shake hands afterward now. I was at Cool-T park for the Sox game Monday to a nearly full stadium and went to a play last night with a decent crowd. Things are pretty normal where we are in Florida except for my stock holdings. They, along with those of others have taken a serious hit.

the average lifespan of a major league baseball is 2 pitches.

hopefully the guy rubbing up the balls with mississippi mud prior to the games isnt infected.

I am healthy and not elderly. If Tom Hanks who is older than me with type 2 diabetes comes thru this in good shape, I will have no worries. I will continue to enjoy traveling the country without the annoying crowds.

And if you pick it up and pass it to somebody not so healthy?

That will be the case for only the next few weeks. If that.
Let's revisit that in a couple of weeks. I will take precautions, but I will continue to live my life.

Hmm. Likely right. But with the large rosters they have, it's a virtual certainty that each team is going to end up with an infected player, no? It's just a question of when. And since there aren't enough test kits out there (thank you, For Profit American Medical Industry!), by the time a team realizes this, everyone will have been exposed.

People are really in a state of hysteria, imo. And I don't need to give Mrs. A700 any government imposed restrictions on physical contact.

Plawecki has been really good every time I've seen him.

The risk of that is minor.

i think it is transmitted fairly easily in close quarters. the 14 guys from Cali that went to Italy all have it. it's not like only 2 or 3 of them contracted it. they all did.

and the outbreak in New Ro was from a gathering at a synagogue.

It is not hysteria!

Coronavirus outbreak numbers in Italy by date:

Feb 18: 3 cases

Feb 21: 20 cases

Feb 27: 655 cases

Mar 1: 1,694 cases

Mar 7: 5,883 cases

Mar 12: ~10,000 cases

Spain is going the same way. They are literally deciding who to try and save and who to leave die in the corridors in Italy at this very moment. I know this as indisputable fact. Health systems are not set up to deal with high numbers of ICU patients. If the heat doesn't kill this thing (and there are signs so far that it doesn't) then the numbers are going to be horrifying. This isn't government sticking their nose in, or media over-blowing things, this is a pandemic which the US has not reacted to at all.

I can't overemphasise the horror that is happening in Italy right now. 3 weeks ago they were going about life as usual.

There is a thread for the Coronavirus. This is not it.

Right. This is the realistic view of 2020 thread. The reality for 2020 is COVID 19.

At this point, everything is about C-19.

Stay safe, my friends.
