Jaylin Davis

Austin Slater

Yaz, Pence, Hamilton

I don't think the Giants signed Hunter Pence to be a full time starter at age 37 one year after playing all of 55 innings in the OF.

Hamilton is on a minor league deal. You are showing have more faith in him than the Giants are...

Steamer projects 2020 WAR of 0.8 in 136 games for Mike Yastrzemski and 2.0 in 147 games for Jackie Bradley Jr. (who is four months older than Yastrzemski).

Does this maybe mean JBJ is being traded?

No, it means they realize they made another payroll blunder.....paying that stiff 11M a year. Hopefully they don't add this stiff.

They keep paying for all these bums, yet.....couldnt come up with the money to pay Mookie?

Be a little fair here. Betts and the Red Sox were not $11mill apart...

Matz makes $5M and has one arb left. JBJ is owed $11M and is done after this year. A one for one deal would not fly.

Maybe we pay $5-6M, but even then, I think NY says no.

We'd have to add someone (Houck? Chavis?) or take on some salary (Familia is owed $11.7M x 2 and the lux tax number is $10M x 2.) Familia & Matz for JBJ would save NY $5.7M, this year and $11.7M next year. To me, that's not fair to Boston, unless Bloom expects a Familia rebound.

Maybe JBJ for Matz & Familia +$5M?

I'd like JBJ, Houck & Chavis for Matz, Smith and Familia and $10M.

I really do like Matz this has to be a pitcher who Bloom must be targeting .He seems like a damn good teammate also and hard worker .I hope we get that kid .Maybe it is time to cash in Chavis but man he’s been hitting the weights this offseason and also seems like a damn good teammate and hard worker .Coupd we trade someone else at this point along with JBJ maybe a someone on the cusp say Bobby D and JBJ ? Mets seem to be needing a power bat in OF though ? They do already have a pretty full OF who are less expensive than JBJ .What about Pitt ? The cards ? Carlos Martinez ? Don’t know if they would need JBJ but maybe ?

JBJ 11M

Eovaldi 17M

M. Bradley 5.5M

David Price 32M

They had the opportunity to address this 2 to 3 years ago. They found a suiter for Price this year, they could have found one 1 or 2 years ago. Its not like anyone around here wanted him around anyway.

I railed against the Price and Eovaldi signings when they happened and for this exact reason. I’m still railing about Eovaldi.

But without Price, not sure the Sox win it all in 2018.

And who is M Bradley?

The thing that drives me crazy, is that people say Mookie wouldn't re-sign.

Thats wrong, he wanted to be paid as the #2 in baseball. You combine those s***** contracts over the last couple of years, and the deal is done.

EDIT: MARTIN PEREZ, Not M. BRADLEY

Oh ok. I was wondering if you meant Barnes.

Here’s the problem. The Sox have no pitching, and subtracting Price, Eovaldi and evening Perez doesn’t solve that problem. It doesn’t even help it break even.

Now they do have a ton of offense. Top 3 in runs scored in MLB each of the last two seasons. Pitching? Not so impressive. Does keeping Betts at the expense of the pitching staff help?

Of course that’s not why Betts was dealt. He was dealt for payroll and free agency reasons. Betts has a good but not great 2016 and turned down $200 mill. He turned down higher offers since. He wants free agency and as much money as possible. He never said a thing about wanting to stay in Boston until after he was dealt. He wasn’t going to sign any contract that wasn’t so absurd it hamstrung the team going forward. Betts was positioning himself to be the next Ernie Banks - Hall of Fame player on bad teams.

Betts was going to hit free agency and no amount of re-writing the past changes this. So are the Sox better off dealing one year of Betts for something and maybe trying to re-sign him? Or keeping him for one year, trying to resign him, and likely getting only a draft pick?

It’s a two way street. Betts has to want to re-sign for it to happen. And saying “all he wanted was $420 million” isn’t painting a picture that the Red Sox were the unreasonable ones...

They should sign Milton Bradley and Puig.

In my perfect world, they are subtracting Price regardless. Also, I don't expect much from Eovaldi, so that 17M in my opinion, is a complete waste.

When you look at it that way.....what team is better?

The team WITH Betts and without Price, JBJ, Eovaldi and Perez...........

or

The team WITHOUT Betts, Price and with Eovaldi, JBJ and Perez.

Either way, they have no pitching. One scenario is with Betts and average/below average pitching. The other is without Betts and average/below average pitching.

But how long do you have Betts for?

Don’t forget - the Sox had no pitching and Betts last year and won 85 games...

JBJ isn't blocking anyone better, he appears to have little to no trade value (or he would have been moved already), and the Red Sox are now far enough below the CBT line that they shouldn't need to engage in further payroll-dumping just for the sake of it. What purpose would trading him now serve?

I don't expect him to be traded, but if he were, for pitching. Take on a worse contract for a decent pitcher, on a team looking to save some cash.

Every time you propose a trade an angel dies.

Pillar is a good pickup and adds a right handed bat and good defense to the outfield. It makes sense that JBJ will be traded as perhaps he should have been last year. Looking forward to late 2020 or 2021, we have two candidate prospects who may come in and take CF going forward. Either of Gilberto Jimenez and Jarren Duran appear to be future Sox outfielders and both have plus-plus speed. Maybe Pillar is around for a couple of years as the outfield transitions to a younger group.

The Sox try to sign Kevin Pillar, and everyone assumes he is the clear starter. Why?

I assume most are assuming this means JBJ is being traded.

He'll most likely be mostly platooned, but I am also hopeful we can get an OF'er from within our system. It was looking pretty bleak for a while.

I'm not that high on Duran. I know his speed helped pad his ridiculously high BAbip, but I'm not sure he can maintain a high BA & OBP as he rises up in the minors.

I assumed it before this new assumption, but that's just me.

I am not for trading JBJ unless he brings us a decent pitcher OR the salary relief allows us to acquire a better than decent pitcher.

IDK, can we get a decent pitcher for him? (Maybe one paid more than he is?)

Can we work out a deal with someone to take his whole salary or $9M of it, and then trade someone else that is not part of our future plans for a good pitcher who is somewhat of a salary dump to another team and that will leave us some room on the lux tax budget to make a deadline more or two, if we are in the hunt?

I'm not sure.

I'm pretty sure Bloom is plotting moves on the pitching front.

And those moves may not involve or indirectly involve trading JBJ.I'd be fine with that, but I'm thinking there is not much of a step down from JBJ to Pillar, and $9-11M can help us get a pitcher or a much better pitcher than we could with his $11M on the books.

If Bloom can work his magic and get us a very good pitcher, leave some cap space and still keep JBJ, I'm fine with that.

Love it. Pillar is a great CFer and can still hit for power.

I can’t go all the way to “love it” for Kevin Pillar...

The fact that there isn't much of a step down from JBJ to Pillar means JBJ is redundant. He's gone. Bloom would not sign Pillar otherwise.

Any trade for JBJ will very likely involve a contract dump. If teams were legitimately interested in Bradley and similar players, Kevin Pillar would not be for the Sox to take at this point in the off-season.

I see pitches like (my oft-mentioned) Ian Kennedy, Danny Duffy, Tyler Chatwood, and Jeff Samardzija. Maybe Yusei Kikuchi, but I am not sure the Mariners have given up yet...

Kevin pillar is a worse version of JBJ. Their similar. Except JBJ is a much better defender. Pillars D is overrated. Like I said, I hope it's a cheap deal. His career OBP is 296.... 296. He only gets on base when he hits. He doesn't know what a BB is
