Is Duran a high enough prospect to bring back a starter even in a package? I'm not really high on him.

Seems like we'd be better able to move current major league talent for younger cost controlled players (i.e. the Miller for ERod trade).

I'm less high on Duran than most, but he's a decent prospect, closer to MLB, and plays a position the Sox have some depth at. Jimenez also works for me, but he is further rom MLB.

What curret MLB talent do you view as tradable for cont controlled starters? Maybe Barnes? I'd do that. He has the talent to be a high leverage reliever, but I do not like his stamina issue in that he cannot be used on consecutive days. (And that is why I would consider him the best option if the Sox employed the opener strategy.)

Anyone else in mind?

For what it's worth here are the trade values for Sox players on the website, remember value includes salary and years of control as big factors:

(Highlighted in red means I think the number is higher than actual value.)

128 Devers

89 Bogey

48 Verdugo

39 Beni

29 ERod

26 Vaz

22 Casas

22 Downs

20 Dalbec

18 Chavis

12 Mata

12 Barnes

12 Duran

11 D Hernandez

9 Jimenez

6 Lugo, JD, Taylor, Walden

5 Workman, Chatham, Ward

4 Wong, Song, Groome

3 Murphy, Perez, Decker, Houck, Plawecki, Gonzalez

2 Bonaci, Cannon, Howlett, Wilson, Arauz, Flores

1 Lopez, Chacon, Esplin, Feliz, Marcano, Rafaeta, Vaughan, Lin, Bello, Netzer, peraza, Politi, Brannen, Northcut, Zeferjahn, Diaz, Hart, Liu, Aybar, Castellanos, Crawford, Ockimey, Perales, Poyner, Ramirez

0.0 to 0.5 Hall, Reyez, Baldwin, Feltman, Moreland, JBJ, Shawarn and more

-9.8 Sale

-14.3 Castillo (his pay)

-24.8 Pedey

-29.0 Eovaldi (owed $41M)

So you think Song is high at 4, but you're ok with Plawecki at 3?

Song can't play for a while.

Plawecki is probably over-valued, but it's hard to place value of catcher defense and handling of the staff- just like Leon.

What would a package of JBJ, Chavis & Duran get us, in terms of a SP'er who may be getting paid much more than JBJ, and the team wants to cut budget?

Or, just JBJ and Chavis, since we may need OF depth after trading JBJ?

This is assuming a try to be more competitive for 2020. Assuming a look at 2021 and beyond...

What could we get for this?

JBJ & Workman?

It's nice that Cleveland has dealt away a lot of their best talent.

Houston did not add much, although they have some nice young talent maturing.

MN, TB and Oak should be good, but they are not "crazy good," and anything can happen in this great game.

One key aspect to our chances is what we end up doing with the newly created budget space. I'm not sure we'll see a whole lot of moves before opening day, and maybe waiting for the deadline might work out better, anyways as not too many quality players are on the trading block, right now,

As of now, it seems like the Red Sox are OK going with some type of creativity for the 5th rotation spot. We'll see how that goes. I agree that it might work out better to wait until closer to deadline, but I really think that we need some more starting depth right now.

Rotation looks shaky, but I’ll hold out hope.

The rotation is shaky. I think Bloom will get us more pitching sooner rather than later.

We'll probably be best served doing both:

Acquire a 5th starter now and make a deadline trade, assuming we are in the race. Usually, the best deals available, in terms of not having to send a nice package back in return, are the ones that involve modest to highly paid pitchers, where the team is looking to dump salary.

A JBJ for a SP'er at the deadline seems less likely, since salary dump teams that are out of it won't want JBJ. I guess we could do two deals or a 3-way trade. To me, it might make best sense, assuming there is a trade partner at this late point in the spring, willing to trade us a SP'er for JBJ plus someone else (Chavis? Dalbec? Walden?) or again find a 3 way deal. We may have to pay part of JBJ's salary and pick up a pitcher with a salary that is more than JBJ's. We will need to leave enough budget space for a deadline deal that keeps us under the tax.

It could be a fine line to walk, financially, but without trading JBJ (or DFA'ing him early in the season), I think the budget space left will be too small to allow us to get higher impact pitchers.

Workman?

JBJ, Workman and Chavis for Matz & Smith (maybe Marisnick- the cheater?)

If I’m the Mets, I’m ok with swapping Smith for Workman, but not so keen on depleting my starter depth...

Could Tanner Houk or Mata break camp with the Redsox ? Didn’t the Rays push their pitchers through ?

I'm certainly not high on many of the players on this list, but chances are a few look good enough in ST'ing to be chosen over Houck and Mata.

If healthy locks (9): Sale, ERod, Eovaldi, Perez, Workman, Barnes, Taylor, Walden, DHern

Out of options (3): Hembree, Weber & Brice (will have to DFA)

Assuming no or 1 DFA, that leaves 1-2 slot for...

Brasier

Velazquez

Brewer

Shawaryn

Osich

Mazza

Hart

Springs

MHall

Not on 40 man roster:

Johnson

Poyner

Houck

McGrath

(Projected to start in AA)

Reyes

Mata

Ward

Feltman

Do they still want an OF'er? (JBJ?)

This is off the wall .We just extended Benny for peanuts right ? What would we get for Andrew with 2 years control ? He’s a good player no question but do we already have someone to replace Benny in the system ? Just asking because sure seems like he could fetch Matz and a prospect .Just a thought

Beni has one more arb after this deal, so 3 years of control.

I wouldn't trade Beni. He's got a lot of upside, still and he's underpaid. We need underpaid players.

The only reason I mentioned Matz & Smith , is because I heard the Mets want a CF'er and don't need D Smith. I'm not sure they need or like Chavis, but I'd change him to Dalbec if they insisted. I love Workman, but he's got one year left and may be a sell high type player.

I've considered suggesting deals where they dump Familia's deal on us ($11.7M x 2 but just $10M x 2 on lux tax). He's basically cancelout JBJ's deal and give them savings next year. They get Workman to replace Familia, and we pray Familia bounces back. What sucks for us is, if he doesn't we've eaten up much of the savings from the Price deal for 2021.

There's lots of moving parts, but I'm thinking some combination of JBJ, Workman, Walden, Chavis or Dalebec might get is Matz and Smith. I realize it hurts their rotation, but they have a good history of replacing SP'ers from withing their own system. We are not.

I agree that it would serve our best interest to pick up a 5th starter now from the scrap heap, then see how we look and what we can do at the deadline. And no, I don't really expect an impact starter, but more along the lines of someone who can eat some innings and keep us in the game.

It's looking less and less likely that JBJ will be traded due to Verdugo's back issues.

We are apparently not getting fat Beni this year. Look for him to improve over last season.

Keep him away from the buffet. ;)
