I don't have a Betts jersey.

Nice phrase. You (and Kimmie) have chanced my thinking on this. It reminds me of what the great philosopher Jagger said, "You can't always get what you want, but sometimes.... you get what you need.'

We'd all like to see Mookie around for his entire career, but at what price? Do you want to see him here forever if it means we never win a WSC again because JH can't/won't spend enough additional money to put quality players around him?

We may not like this but it may be what we need.

Maybe now is the time to get one and store it for a year?

They're on sale!

This is a really thoughtful response. Thanks for that. I do bring up that "rich man's budget thing" - it is likely that there are some here who know why I do it. Out of respect for the posters here who actually sound as though they are capable of being wrong from time to time, I will stop. Yes, you are correct in saying that I was one of those posters who wants to be competitive year in and year out. It has always been about the hunt for me. I'm a regular season kind of guy. Don't get me wrong - i've enjoyed the championships as much as anyone but i guess it is what happens along the way that has the most meaning for me. I do think that the game I loved and grew up with is slipping away. I can accept that and still be a fan. I just feel sorry for my grandson who loves nothing more than to hit, catch, and throw a ball more than anything else. Thanks again for the response.

I hope he finds the joy of the game in another player and keeps throwing that ball. :)

When Jamie Moyer wore it, was it just his number, or for his age, or the speed of his fastball?

And it has done nothing to smooth out the distribution of salaries across ballplayers.

I do think the time has come to eliminate the guaranteed contract and come up with something else. If the players think the guaranteed contract has worked out for them across their union membership, they can pass me some of what they are drinking.

There is no way in hell the players are agreeing to non guaranteed contracts. There is no benefit for them doing that.

I guess they just don't like FREEDOM then.

Right. It would be typical of ownership/management to argue that something abstract and undefinable is of more value than the mere material things they themselves are willing to take in its place.

f*** Mookie Betts. The guy is a greedy imbecile. The Red Sox tried to sign him long term (more than once), and were willing to make him a rich man in the process, but that wasn't enough for Betts.

On the topic of free agency and greed in the sport, yeah it has been this way for a long time. Interestingly, small market teams continue to have a hard time competing. We sometimes overlook this, but nothing has changed. The fact that the Yankees could sign CC Sabathia, AJ Burnettt, and Texieria matters. The fact that a small market team couldn't sign Sabathia, Burnett, and Texieria matters. The fact that the Yankees could sign G.Cole matters. The fact that small market teams couldn't sign G.Cole matters. Look at the W.S. Champions from the mid-1990s onwards, how many of those championship were won by small market teams? Small market teams are at a competitive disadvantage in terms of winning championships. True, the Marlins of 2003 put it together, the Royals won a W.S. but most championships go to teams that spend.

When a small market team does win a championship, it is the exception, not the rule.

Yeah! Those greedy bastards! How DARE they ask for money that rightfully belongs to ownership??

There is also a lot of “small market” teams who don’t even make an effort. For example, what the f*** have the Pirates and Marlins been doing? Producing talent to trade to others teams every few years? And there is also teams who spend a lot of money and don’t win: Angels, Dodgers, etc.

Dodgers?

They haven’t won a World Series since 88.

They have won their division like 7 years in a row now. Let’s not lump them in with Angels and Mets just yet...

The other post I was responding too was referencing only World Series titles.

Both the Marlins and Pirates have teams that are so broken that it will take years to rebuild. Ben Cherrington for example stepped into a mess in Pittsburgh. He has taken steps to return that franchise to respectability after the 2019 clubhouse infighting.

No. Let's lump them in with the Braves instead.

The Marlins and Pirates are reminders of why we should be grateful for the Red Sox franchise's success over the last two decades.

Not to mention the Patriots franchise....and even the Celtics and Bruins. The C's last mediocre season was 13/14 and the Bruins last losing season was 06/07.

New England fans have had it good.

I’m kinda over the whole Mookie thing now where it took me a few weeks to get over Nomar .I know this is not a popular stance and we won a World Series without the pouter but Nomar was a better hitter than Mookie for same time frame in age except for 18 and I wonder how Nomar would have hit with technology backing him ? To me If Nomar was a player today how much would we pay him ? Just something to think about ? 400 million ? Nahhh 300 million ? Have to think he was born at the wrong time .We will be fine . That’s an oversimplification of winning.

Since the Dodgers last title, the Marlins have two. But which club has its fan base to more wasted seasons that were over by July?

The Rays have had some pretty solid success as a small market, even made a World Series. He didn’t give them credit, so why should I give dodgers credit for almost winning if he’s strictly only counting World Series rings?
