What should Bloom's plan be?

  1. 1. What should Bloom's plan be?

    • Plug in holes in roster and compete
    • Hold steady and dump salary during the season
    • Trade Price for salary relief while taking on a bad contract
    • Trade Betts for prospects
    • Trade some combo of Eovaldi/JBJ/other to get under tax cap

If he trades Betts, I am not being harsh at all. No one in the fan base will think that trading Betts is part of a plan to keep him here for the long term no matter how they explain this reset mumbo jumbo. How did that work out with Lester?

as you are a season ticket holder your thoughts on this have true meaning. that said, lester was never on record saying he will absolutely be going to FA and looking for Trout money. i dont think we can compare the lester and mookie situations. lester wanted to feel loved by boston FO and sign a fair contract extension prior to becoming a FA. Mookie is adamant to go to FA and sign the biggest contract po$$ible.

Yeah dude. They didn't really want to pay Lester. It was the org philosophy back then.

Well, they did a fine job bumping up the price for Theo.

So let's accelerate the decline. That makes sense.

The people who still watch will always watch since there is nothing on tv in the summer anyway.

When the weather is nice, people are more likely to go outdoors.

At 7pm at night? Not likely. That's an issue with weekend games.

I don't think so this year -- not if they trade Mookie before the season, which basically says we're giving up on the season.

Once the s*** hits the fan, the fan will be washing hands seeking a clean break... if/when the new guys get back in contention, viewers will tune back in.

Even without Mookie, the team is more fun to watch than many other past Sox teams I watched everyday.

That remains to be seen. I think one or two young guys coming up and being exciting will make people tune in (like when Chavis was on fire after call up last year).

Not trading Betts may accelerate the decline beyond 2020.

It's the difference between a 4th round pick and whatever the prospect return is. I'd hope the Sox could get some guys better than a 4th round lottery pick.

And if the Sox re-sign him they don't even get the stupid 4th round pick.

He will not re-sign with the Sox because they are not going to pay him the "crazy money" that he wants. The 2013 Sox proved that you can take $30 million and get 3 really good $10M players rather than have one making $30M.

I'd rather Mookie than Dempster/Gomes/Napoli.

Who IS going to give Betts crazy money?

I'm thinking we can outbid anyone not "crazy."

Dodgers, Padres, Yankees, White Sox, Mets, Rangers to name a few.

Padres can't afford it. The other teams probably could, but I think Mookie is worth more to the Sox than to other teams just from a marketing perspective.

And they got one year out of Victorino for 39 million. And all those guys were useless in 2014. So those 2013 signings aren't really a great example.

If Philly and the Padres can pay $300 million or more for Harper and Machado, someone can definitely pay crazy money for Mookie.

Those signings won the Sox a World Series. I know Victorino didn't pan out after 2013 but no one can deny that he played a HUGE role in the title. Remember his homer against the Tigers? One World Series title is worth it. The point is, championship teams can be built without paying one guy 40 million a year. How many WS titles do the Angels have with Trout? ZERO!!!!

My son is a Cardinals fan. He was sad when Albert Pujols signed that 10 year deal with the Angels. He isn't now and hasn't been for a few years. The Angels are the ones who are sad about it. They have won nothing with him and they are still paying him big bucks when he is way past his prime.

We were very fortunate in 2013. A lot of things had to go right and they did. Like Lackey, for example.

But that team isn't really a blueprint for success. Especially when you look at what happened the next year.

You just contradicted your previous post which said ratings have fallen for years. Which is it; ratings have fallen for years or, the people who still watch will always watch?

I think they got their one big contract and aren't going to add another.
