If the Sox replace Betts with Springer and Urquidy, are they really still non-contenders?

I look at it this way - Springer has to be more open to an extension than Betts is...

I agree he'd be more open to an extension, but he's also open to sign with us in 2021.

I'm just not for trading Betts for any one year players, unless the team insists it is needed to balance the money.

Instead of trading Mookie, why not trade JDM? We might have to eat some money, of course. But if they really are desperate to get under the 208, it's an option.

The sox aren't dealing Betts to the Astros for those two. Houston would say no because they love Springer and are inclined to try and extend him. Everyone knows Betts isn't interested in re-signing. Also, the Astros need Urquidy with Cole and Miley gone

They might also want Eovaldi- like they did last winter...

The Trade Simulator accepted this deal:

Betts & Eovaldi

$3M cash

for

Urquidy

Reddick (to help offset Eovaldi's money)

Jeremy Pena

Cristian Javier

The market for both Price and Eovaldi would appear to be depressed by health concerns. Which only makes sense. Other teams are as concerned about their ability to stay on the field as we are.

Or trade Bogaerts?

Unlike Price, Eovaldi and Martinez, there is a market for Bogaerts.

It’s also an option...

Very true, but when you have a gaping hole in your 4 or 5 slot, you may take a gamble on one of them.

Fans here seem to have no problem thinking there's a significant chance we compete next year because one or both will rebound in 2020.

When you see what some injury-prone pitchers are signing for, these days (including Eovaldi's signing last winter), you can guess some GMs are willing to settle on potential value.

And if they could stay on the field, you wouldn’t be looking to deal them

I would. Neither looks to be part of our longer term hopes and plans.

I said the same about HRam after his first season here-something like, "If he hits .300 35 120 next year, I'd want to trade him even more..."

That's a 1998 Marlins fire-sale option.

Eovaldi has never been able to stay on the field, but teams were still all over him last year like dung beetles on, well, dung...

There's nothing wrong with fans having an optimist bias.

Oh trading Bogaerts could really backfire . The Sox might enter 2021 with Price and Eovaldi still here, but Bogaerts, Betts and Martinez all elsewhere...

Yep. Because when last seen he was pitching at a very high level. And by today's standards, 68 million is not going overboard.

What Eovaldi got is about 20% of what Cole got. :D

They won again soon after though.

That they did. And the Cubs and Astros did quite nicely with the tank and rebuild approach too.

Somehow I don't think that's what the Sox FO has in mind.

Telling someone to calm down never works. Ever tried it with your wife?

My wife and I have never raised our voices toward each other in 26 years together ... which may or may not be a good thing.:)

Other teams wanted him, too. The Astros were one. (That doesn't mean they still want him, but they do need SP'ing.)

No, and I try to stay positive. My point is, I think some GMs would like to have Price or Eovaldi as options or "hopes," but only the money gets in the way.

One can be quiet and still need to clam down.

They both just repeatedly swear and curse the other when alone in the room/car/subway/movie theater...

But while there is certainly some Recency Effect, it could not have been be the impetus behind the Eovaldi Lust of last off-season. There’s no way any GM entrusted with managing a a nine-figure payroll is less thorough than I am...

Every day I come here and check to see if the Sox made any moves. Looks like we're going into 2020 with the team as presently constituted. Let's just hope Price can make his starts this year.

I'm good with our GM. You make good trades. That requires patience. I can't get upset with our new GM over that fact that apparently no one wants to take on our bloated salaried players.

Oh he's been given a tough task when it comes to off-loading some salary.

But so far 45 players have signed minor league contracts, and Bloom has not signed a single player to one. (He has signed two players, Marco Hernandez and Josh Osich, to split contracts. But that was also after non-tendering both of them.)

And while the majority of these players who sign minor league deals won't amount to much, they do occasionally pay off. And while rare, some pay off very big. There were a lot of players who signed MiLB deals elsewhere who were worth a gamble. After all, there is no such thing as a bad minor league contract...

hahaha. saying "calm down" to someone is like asking them to punch you in the neck.
