(Cherry-picking alert) E-Rod has been very good since May 1. 13 starts with a 3.76 ERA, and a (by today's standards) whopping 6.08 innings per start.

He has been very good lately. Let's hope he is finally starting to put it all together. I think I've been hoping this for the past 2-3 years. His notorious habit of going from 0-2 to 3-2 is frustrating, to say the least.

Completely agree.

I don't know what's going on with our starters. It's not just one guy, it's all of them, except for maybe ERod. But while ERod is getting deeper into games, his other numbers have not been as good.

Our starting pitching has let us down.

It has been a strange year. E-Rod has been the one bright spot lately...... He really seems to be playing better and better as the season goes. Hopefully he continues this in the second half :)

I guess Price has been the only pitcher this season who hasn't been up and down. As E-Rod comes up, Sale goes down and vice-versa. All this accounts a lot for our poor showing.

The starters put us in a massive hole in April. Blame Cora, if you must, but the starters sucked for 5-6 starts each, except for Price.

The starters had a very good May, but other than ERod & Price, they have sucked ever since. 5 horrible weeks, 4-5 great weeks and then crappy ever since- as a whole.

SP'ers only:

First 30 games:

5.39 ERA

5.07 IP/GS

Next 32 games:

3.64 ERA

5.49 IP/GS

Last 32 games:

4.88 ERA

5.14 IP/GS

This year reminds me of 2014 and the bid rotation sell-off, let-down year.

If you take away Price from all 3 sample sizes and ERod from the last 2, the numbers would be shockingly horrible.

Yes, the pen has sucked, but they never were expected to be even good. Our starters were supposed to be top 3 or 4 in MLB at the start of the season. They have come up woefully short.

Some of those reliever innings are due to extra innings, but still...

Yes.

If a starter goes 6 innings and then lets up 3 runs in the 7th (2 unearned), we still say, "Nice start."

Our pen went 6 scoreless innings last night before Velazquez and Bogey's meltdown, but nobody thinks, "nice game, pen."

Bogey’s meltdown? Velasquez created his own mess, including that careless obstruction call...

Porcello rebounded very nice after a shaky start. Hope he can build on that. Take away his start against the Yankees and he’s averaging 6 innings again this year. 6 innings and usually 2-4 runs is more than enough to give this team a chance to win. Not many other 4th rotation guys in the league will give you much better.

Exactly. The late inning losses are always the most glaring and the hardest to take. It's what we tend to remember more than anything else. It's easy to overlook all of the great work our pen has done.

Those numbers are brutal, especially for such a talented group of starters. I have to believe that our second half will be much stronger than the first half. Make it to the playoffs, then anything can happen. :)

Bad news for Porcello fans:

Red Sox Stats‏ @redsoxstats 7h7 hours ago

The only qualified starters in the AL with a worse ERA than Porcello are Ivan Nova, Reynaldo Lopez, and Aaron Sanchez. I still don't understand how you can think you're winning anything without Eovaldi in the rotation. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It doesn't matter who is in that 5th starter spot if the other 5 pitchers don't start pitching better, which includes getting deeper into games.

On the whole, Porcello's start last night was not bad. He needs to be better, but he did rebound nicely.

5-0 lead in the 1st, then allowed them 4 runs to get back in it. Not bad. Lucky we played the Blue Jays. He gets the Orioles next. Edited by OH FOY!

Eeeek..... that is ugly..... Just like Sale, Porcello seemed very frustrated with himself last night. This has been one ugly stretch for Porcello. Jays, Yankees, Tigers and now Jays again have just been flat out bad performances. What is the killer...... Jays twice and the Tigers are bad teams. Porcello just can't perform like this against teams like them. The Yankees is understandable. They are in my opinion the best team this year (though Tampa has now beat them 3 times in a row) but to put up performances like this against bottom barrel offensive teams is just not right. I hope Porcello rebounds, and last night was definitely a better performance than his last 3 starts but far from great.

If you really want to sum up the state of the Sox starting pitching, using traditional numbers, Cashner is the Sox #2 pitcher behind Price.

One bright spot is E-Rod really seems to be getting it together. 4 runs earned in his last 18 innings and one of those games was against the Yankees. Hope this trend continues for him. Sale and Porcello however need to get it together. FAST.

Good Post, and he still might make it. You win 9 games with the Orioles, he's up for Cy Young for me.

Oh but Cashner is DD's prime acquisition this year. I expect DD to overpay to sign him to a 4 year deal unless Henry fires DD first.

Something that I mentioned a couple of days ago about how many pitches it takes our starters to get through the 1st inning:

Red Sox Stats‏ @redsoxstats 9h9 hours ago

Coming out of the all star break the Sox starters have had to throw 23, 24, 27, 14, 20, and 21 first inning pitches. Not ideal.

I know sometimes when I take a few weeks off typing tests and go back I am around 100 wpm rather than 115 wpm... So it makes sense..... That's the best example I could come up with

I suspect that opposing teams have a game plan of trying to make our starters throw as many pitches as possible.

And unfortunately, it has so far worked very well. The Dodgers worked the hell out of the entire pitching staff. Their ability to foul off pitches was amazing.
