Was a hard-throwing starting pitcher for about 10 years. Then he was made a closer. . That change made him an all-star.

Know someone in a similar situation? If you were around 40 years ago you would know what I'm talking about.

Eckersley was an all star and a 20 game winner as a starting pitcher. Chris Sale will not close games in the regular season.

Little trivia here - what team did both Eckersley and Smoltz pitch for in the last year of their respective careers?
Posted (edited)
My property professor in law school was a huge Red Sox fan who worked into his lecture on the Rule Against Perpetuities the image of Dennis Eckersley pitching in the 88th inning. The rule was violated if a property interest was not guaranteed to vest "within the lives in being." In other words, an interest that would vest at the end of the Red Sox season in 1980 violated the rule because Eckersley theoretically could pitch into perpetuity. Edited by harmony

(Not looking it up.) It's either St. Louis or Boston.

I know Smoltz played one more year after Boston. I think it was STL.

Simple fast. Eck became a Hall pf Famer after (and because) somebody had brains enough to say. "Exk, you're now my closer!".

Note: My 94 year old Macr D is worsening by the day. This could be my last thread/ Even with a glass I cannot read the comments!

In correct.

Smoltz did finish his career in St. Louis, but it was only in the latter part of 2009 after starting out in Boston that year.

And Eck finished with the Red Sox.

Of course the answer is the Red Sox. It’s a Red Sox message board...

True, but Eovaldi could.

He could, but then you've got Brian Johnson starting every 5th day.

Better that DD picks up a reliever on the trade market, I think.

Hey Mal, I too was having vision problems until I zoomed in. I use Google Chrome as a browser, and in the upper right corner of the screen are 3 vertical dots. Click on these dots and a window opens with a 'zoom' choice. Click the + sign until the comments are large enough to read easily. We need your continued presence on the forum as you consistently represent the voice of reason.

It might not be a stretch that Dombrowski picks up another starter, then moves Eovaldi to the pen for the remainder of the season. I do not advocate putting a solid starter in the bullpen, but it might be the way to go, depending on who's available and on the health of Eovaldi.

Try Zoomtext. It has a feature where it will read to you. It’s like talking about the Sox with Stephen Hawking.

I have a few visually impaired family members who swear by it.

THANK YOU AL! I use the Google enhancerm but that has its limitations. Makes thefeed a little largerm but also a lttle blirrier. Last night I watched the Rays/Yankees game with the sound off, and th Sox with the sound on. Just peeking back and forth waiting for Devers lose a hanging curve ball!

Mal, sorry to hear about the vision difficulties. Go ahead and post verbally, we'll still hear you coming through

True, but Eovaldi could.

I think Eovaldi ends up in the pen when he returns, which means they need to be in the market for a #5 starter.

And regarding Dennis Eckersley, his career was almost over before he ever threw a pitch for Oakland due to alcoholism. An injury to Jay Howell opened the door for Eckersley to close, who threw 115 innings as a reliever in 1987. If I remember right too, he traded his ability to throw 95+ for the pinpoint control be became to be immortalized for.
