Anybody think we can make a run at this guy?

Just hit his 4th homerun. He'd be a very nice pickup.

Since we have Chavis at 3rd, i'd be willing to send Devers and a prospect for Merifield. I think he can help solidify the bottom of the lineup.

No way would I trade Devers for WM, let alone add a prospect.

Devers & Pedroia for WM & Ian Kennedy... maybe

Would anyone want him at this stage of his career?

No, but he offsets Kennedy's contract to some extent.

He would veto the deal.

at least Kennedy can play. Why would anyone want Pedroia? He has negative trade value

Devers and Chatham for Merrifield and the contract of Kennedy?

Cesar Hernandez of Philadelphia is another underrated 2b who might be available if the Phillies decide Scott Kingery needs to play everyday once he gets off the IL...

It's not about wanting Pedey. It's about balancing the money, and I think Devers is better than WM.

If KC threw in enough money to keep us under the max line, I might agree.

It was clear in the off season that we had a high risk situation with Pedroia. It was also clear that we had two utility guys either of which could fill in except Nunez was thought to be back healthy. He is on the DL with chronic leg issues as well and we need more than a single utility guy to back up the infield. Several of us suggested making a run at Merrifield at that time, but we either didn't have the interest, financial cap space or trade pieces to get it done. Too bad as we are in a bit of a pickle at this point. Chavis is doing okay, but it is likely the pitcing staffs will find holes in his big swing in the period ahead. Right now he is our answer at 2nd.

Or took Nunez.

Kennedy is owed $16.5mill next season as well...

My Pedey idea is a non-starter. He'll refuse that trade.

I just brought him up as a contract balancing addition.

I'd like to have Kennedy, but not his contract.

Nunez, Pearce and some cash wouldn't even get near $16M x 2.

While .780 is a pretty good OPS for 2B

I do appreciate that we are now at the point in the season where we just suggest trading for the best players on other teams for whatever dreck we don't want (not to say that Devers is dreck, just saying).

You could probably get Merrifield without including Devers, but it would likely cost some combination of D Hernandez, Chavis, Casas, and taking on a large unwanted contract from their books.

Why do we need Whit?

We have Chavis.

Whit Merrifield has quietly been one of the best second basemen in baseball over the past few seasons, so everyone could use him. Add in the fact that Chavis is a 1b in 2b clothing, and you could really use him. Now why would the Royals want to deal him? He just signed a ridiculously team friendly deal and is the face of the team. If you want to get him, you’ll need to give up more

than Devers, who at this point looks like a 1b and hasn’t proven he can hit major league pitching on a regular basis.

Also, those bandying Kennedy’s name around haven’t looked at his April as a first time full time reliever. He’s been absolutely dominant in short outings and may end up bringing back something strong if the Royals eat money.

Moncada has come a long way but we used him to get an even better player. He now would be our second baseman had we been able to wait for him to mature.

I mentioned him precisely because I looked at his April numbers.

Whit Merrifield has a four-year, $16.35 million contract that runs through 2022 and with a team option for 2023 Merrifield remains under team control for the same duration as Devers.

Devers may never reach the level that has resulted in Merrifield’s 10 bWAR in just over two years since the start of the 2017 season.

I get it.

I love Devers' potential. I know I'm a homer, but I would not trade Devers for Merrifield.

Pedroia is done in my opinion. Chavis needs to continue to play when they try to bring Pedroia and Nunez back.

WM is good and I think he’s more consistent than Devers so far in their careers but who knows Devers could start crushing the ball and we’ll stop thinking of trading him.

Maybe Devers is more of a warm weather hitter who takes his time to get going. He has been hitting of late and he is very young. His problems are more related to his lack of focus on defense. He'll make a couble of difficult ones and then blow a routine play. 8 errors in April sets him on an awful pace foor the season. WM is a better fielder right now, but so are just about any other 3rd basemen in the league.

Middlebrooks was so bad, he is no longer in baseball. He last played in 2017. Plus, he only had 70 PAs in 2016 and 2017 at the ML level.

After his great half season start with the Socx .835 in 286 PAs, he was pretty much horrible:

.696 in 374 PAs in 2013

.522 in 234 in '14

.602 in 270 in '15 with SDP

In 2604 innings at 3B, WM had a -0.1 UZR/150 and -19 DRS. (.957 FLG%)

Devers: 1769 innings and a -7.0 UZR/150 (-8.6 this year) and -15 DRS (.919 FLG%).

I think the WM he was referring to was Whit Merrifield, not Will Middlebrooks or Walter Mondale...
