Probably because Swihart was the catcher the last time Velazquez started, and we pitched a shutout.

So, pitcher-catcher match-ups is a much higher priority than some seem to want to believe.

I'm guessing the fact that Vazquez caught the previous 3 days in a row, and this was an early morning start, had something to do with that decision as well.

One of the things that made Varitek so good, IMO, was his ability to adjust on the fly when needed, rather than just sticking with the game plan and scouting reports. Leon talks about that same ability.

 

I think that too often, some catchers will stick to the pre-determined game plan, even when it's not working. The ability to know when to make adjustments and what adjustments to make is a skill that not only takes time, but it also takes baseball smarts and keen observation.
