Leon's fat ass cant play 2B. Vasquez is immediately more valuable.

Swihart can.

Makes you wonder: if Vaz is the better catcher, and Swihart the better 2Bman, then why flip 'em?

Have to pose that one to Cora. He makes move like these that leave the fans guessing.

Probably because Swihart was the catcher the last time Velazquez started, and we pitched a shutout.

There's usually an explanation somewhere.

So, pitcher-catcher match-ups is a much higher priority than some seem to want to believe.

I'm guessing the fact that Vazquez caught the previous 3 days in a row, and this was an early morning start, had something to do with that decision as well.

I was just reading an interview with Leon on WEEI in which Leon talks about how he calls a game. One of the things that made Varitek so good, IMO, was his ability to adjust on the fly when needed, rather than just sticking with the game plan and scouting reports. Leon talks about that same ability.

I think that too often, some catchers will stick to the pre-determined game plan, even when it's not working. The ability to know when to make adjustments and what adjustments to make is a skill that not only takes time, but it also takes baseball smarts and keen observation.

I think teams are getting better at identifying the strategies other teams are using against them and adjusting accordingly. That's where having a guy like Leon who can "counter adjust" makes sense.

And it’s the kind of stuff that drives dannycater nuts ;)

Well aware of it.

My post was a tongue in cheek response to moon's posting of the catchers offensive stats and the fact that Vazquez was playing second yesterday.

B-R is cumbersome for those type of stats. Fangraphs.com is easier....

Swihart to be DFA'd . I guess Leon will be coming up .

Leon is coming up, as is Erasmo Ramirez.

Walden to Pawtucket. Swihart to DFA limbo...

I will be very surprised if he is not claimed.

Me, too.

If he does, what does that say about the argument that Leon is useless, because nobody claimed him- an argument I felt made little sense?

That Swihart is cheaper and more teams have catcher injuries now?

I did not agree with that argument either.

Swihart can also passably play other positions; could be valuable to an NL club, especially with double switches.

Thank god Vasquez is in tonight. We have a chance when hes catching. Leon sucks.

Sox were 55-23 (.705) in Leon starts last year.
