One could argue that quality start was his second worst start out of this 6 game stretch:

IP - ER

5.0 -0

5.0 -1

6.0 -3 (Quality Start)

3.0 -7

5.1 -1

5.0 -2

It's high time to tweak the Quality Start parameters.

In today's game, 5 innings and 1 run or less is golden.

But a counter argument is the less stress you put on the bullpen, the better.

A team should have about 1450 IP per season. If your starters only give you 750-800 IP, then the bullpen has to make up 650-700 IP, which averaged out to 93-100 IP per pitcher in seven-man bullpen. Of course, teams will use in excess of seven relievers over 162 games. But even if all 7 give you 70 IP apiece, that still leaves your depth to cover 160-210 IP per season, or about the same as a TOR starter. (Having a LOOGY who only pitched 20-30 IP. not only inflates this amount, but leads to other issues as well.)

While 5IP 0 ER is golden, the idea does need to be to minimize bullpen workload...

Even 5 IP 2 ERs is better than 6 & 3. Or, something like this...

5.0 - 0-1 ER

5.2- 2 ER

6.2- 3 ER

8.0- 4 ER

True, but the importance of starter IP is vital. This is one big reason why the opener strategy will struggle to catch on.

A few years ago, both KC and TB simultaneously adopted the strategy of minimizing starter workload and going bullpen heavy. The teams ranked 29 and 30 in starter innings about 1/2 way thru the season but ranked 1 and 2 in team ERA. In both cases, their staffs fell apart as bullpen workloads increased...

I get that, but 2 ER for 1 more IP is an 18.00 ERA. I doubt the staffs suffered to that extent.

This apparently keeps the Sox in compliance with the little known " Ramirez Rule " , which requires organizations to maintain at least one Ramirez in their system.

Seriously!

Manny Ramirez has to be the most common first & last baseball name ever :)

Man, we are bored, aren't we?

Yes, we're at that "Hispanics have funny names and aren't there so many of them these days" time of the offseason.

Better than Buch!

(I couldn't resist!)

LOL

I was going to add "Buccholz should be next" but I refrained.

But in all sincerity, I think he should be.

I still think buchholz could be a great reliever for us.

As I responded before, I think that's an intriguing thought.

This depends on where any particular BP is at, for me anyway. If the likelihood that our BP would give up another run regardless (or is it irregardless? :) Oh no! Not that again) it could just be a wash for me.

Giving up one run in the sixth inning would still put you ahead in moon's scenario.

Some team with a lot less to lose than the Red Sox will sign Buchholz to see if he can have one of his good seasons for them. The Angels are indeed a good candidate for this, other candidates that spring to mind are OAK, MIL, CIN and PHI.

Personally I actually think he signs with the Reds. They've been announcing an expansion in payroll and they know the fans aren't happy with their pitching staff. That means they're looking to buy, and Buchholz is an intriguing buy-low candidate.

Buchholz is good enough that they could inspire at least some positive response from the fanbase by signing him to show they're doing something, and they probably have the money to sign him and accomplish their other offseason goals. Seems to me like a good fit.

More depth with the Ryan Weber signing. He can start or be a bullpen guy. We have now added 6 depth guys this offseason. Smart moves by desperate Dave.

Dave is finally starting to pay attention to us.

Plus the Reds didn’t re-sign Harvey, which leaves an open spot on their Disabled List...

Have to love all of these depth signings . Just hope we don't wind up in " the depths ."

As long as 2 starters aren't out at the same time, we should be okay.

I like our depth as it is in the rotation. Our pen depth will look okay, if we can add one solid arm.

Sale

Price

Eovaldi

Porcello

ERod

Wright (starts the season on DL?)

Johnson

Velazquez

Sawaryn

______

Brasier

Barnes

Hembree

Thornburg

Workman

Poyner

(Wright/Johnson/Velazquez)

Lakins

Walden

Brewer

J Taylor

Shawaryn

Shepherd

E Ramkirez

J Weber

Z Putman

D Hernandez

Feltman

I think it all starts with the health of our starting pitchers.

Price and Porcello should be ok.

Rodriguez is primed for a break out season if he can stay healthy.

Eovaldi’s arm looked strong at the end of the season. We will have to keep our fingers crossed.

Sale is a wild card. If he is right and pitching for his next contract, we are gold! If the shoulder has issues, we are in for a tough year.

The bullpen will cause us consternation, but really talented help is on the way!

Benintendi and Devers are ascending players. Betts, Martinez and bogey should continue to produce all star stats. Bradley, the cast of characters at second and the first base platoon of Moreland/Pearce could backslide. Catcher remains a black hole offensively, but our pitchers love throwing to them and happy pitchers are productive pitchers,

Two really good free agent relievers signings and I like this team to go all the way again, if sale’s shoulder is right!

If our catchers hit their career norms, we'll see a 100 point gain from 2018.

If the Sox do, it won’t be because of any of these signings...
