Xander is homegrown talent and we gave up some younger talent for Sale in a trade. They are both getting a raise. Not quite similar to DD signing say Price in an open market.

So?

The Yanks had several homegrown guys that they had to re-sign yet Yankee fans had to hear sawx fans whine about buying championships and payroll every year.

These sawx teams are no different.

The Bogaerts and Sale extensions are evidence, if Betts needs any, that the Sox are serious about keeping this winning core of players together.

Per Fangraph...

Cliff? Nah, no cliff here.

No reset, Henry would rather have good teams and pay the tax. He's the greatest owner ever, and very shrewd as well. What the hell does a little tax matter when you're winning titles and the market value of your team keeps going up?

Some of us have been saying this since the talk of the cliff began. It is an odd conversation and a theory that has been promoted by not very many people, but those who believe in it have been adamant about it happening. We have seen all of the facts and figures many times over. We have been cautioned about becoming the New York Yankees. We have listened to constant reminders about what the best and according to some might be the only way of building a team - through the farm. We all have our opinions and mine is that there is no cliff approaching and there are numerous ways to build a team. We have a wealthy owner who loves this team. I'm just going to go with it.

It's not a free agent signings.

That's all......feel free to put me on 'ignore'.

Again, not all the Yanks players were free agent signings.

So how is it different?

If we stay just $1M under the max line every year, we can avoid a "cliff."

I still don't think that is the plan, but with all these extensions and talk of more extensions, I'm not so sure.

And it's possible that player or two will emerge from the minors.

I care. I feel like I'd be a hypocrite, if I didn't.

I didn't buy into the Evil Empire nonsense back then, so I don't think it impacts my viewpoint as a fan. Win by any means necessary.

And Sox fans have to hear over and over again about championships that happened before color tv was invented. Who cares?

Well, I was simply pointing out that these sawx teams should be viewed no differently than the Yankee teams they accused of "buying" championships.

If you don't care, why bother commenting on it.........

The Sox have two big FA signings on the roster. JD. We had Price a while back. HRam & Pablo combined were a big commitment. Lackey-Crawford- Manny...

As late as 2013-2014, the Yanks signed 4 of the 13 free agents offered a QO in ONE YEAR! (Ellsbury, Bektran, McCann & Kuroda)

The Sox have never come close tot hat kind of massive FA signings.

Well then you are a hypocrite if you think there's any difference.

Can you read?

I've said all along we are doing what we used to hate the Yankess for doing.

You can't have the highest payroll in baseball several years running and think you are not "buying" championships.

dude cant even type Red Sox. or even Sox. too funny. Boston is in his head big-time.

the % difference in what the yankees salaries when they bought their championships and for the first 8 years of this century when they couldnt get a parade vs what the rest of the league was spending during those same years is FAR and away a larger % difference then the Red Sox (or is it sawx?) payroll vs the rest of the league when we have had our 4 parades in the 21st century.....

We sure did hate what the Yankees were doing Moon but I think the question really is why? The high road says that we all felt that victories won through free agency were tainted. The lower road says something else. Much of the so called "hatred" was pure and simple jealousy. The Yankees were doing something that the ownership of the Red Sox was either unwilling or incapable of doing. It is a different world now. I like going into seasons now as a team to beat. Our ownership team has proven to be responsible and dedicated to putting teams on the field that compete year in and year out.

It took the Sox selling the team to Henry for this team to really become competitive year in and year out. Ownership was god awful before then.

Even before henry they still pretty much always had a top 10 payroll.

henry certainly stepped it up a bit though.

boston red sox payroll: $1,179,000,000 / $197,000,000 per season

new york yankees parades: 0

I don't think he's trying to make that argument. He's just still got sand in his underpants over the Jeter Sucks ARod Swallows shirts.

I agree, but you are wrong about several years running. Last year was the first time we were number 1 in spending. We are likely to make that two in a row, unless someone spends heavily this summer. 2 years vs 15 years in a row is a little different, don't you think?

Almost every Sox fan lambasted Yankee fans for "buying championships."

My point with the Sox was about going forward. Being the highest paid team for a year or two is no where near what the Yanks were, but by not resetting soon, I was fearing that we'd approach the Yankee record of decades of blowing other teams away in spending (by much more than the Sox.)

I've been thinking we'd reset. Now, I'm not so sure. If we keep spending like the Yanks did (on free agents or whatever), then the argument is sound, and I agree.

2018: Sox (SFG $27M behind)

15 straight years the Yanks blew away the others.

The Sox are on their way to leading the league for 2 years in a row by $27M last year and less than $20M this year.

But one doesn't have to have the highest payroll to be viewed as "buying" a championship.

And for the record, I have no problem with it.

I just think it's silly that you want to be viewed "differently".
