Because August waivers are revocable, most teams will put most players on waivers to gauge interest if nothing else.

Who is placed on waivers really doesn't mean anything.

It means the GM is signaling for a dance partner

No - it just means a GM is looking to provide options. Almost every player will go through waivers in August.

[h=2]Cubs To Acquire Daniel Murphy[/h]By Jeff Todd | August 21, 2018 at 1:21pm CDT

1:29pm: Prospect Andruw Monasterio is headed to D.C. in the deal, per Jon Heyman of Fancred (Twitter links), along with a player to be named later or cash considerations. It is not known how the sides have divvied up Murphy’s remaining salary obligations. He’s earning $17.5MM on the season, with just under $4MM left to be paid.

1:21pm: The Cubs will acquire veteran infielder Daniel Murphy from the Nationals, according to Robert Murray of The Athletic (via Twitter). Reports last night indicated that Murphy had been claimed by the Chicago club, with Craig Mish of Sirius XM reporting moments ago on Twitter that the sides were working out a deal.

With this news, it’s clear that the Nationals are throwing in the towel on a disastrous 2018 season. While the club remains on the fringes of contention, it has failed to capitalize on several opportunities of late to make up ground.

Murphy is among several high-priced Nationals players slated to reach the open market at season’s end, so this is likely a precursor to further dealmaking. Indeed, the club has already made a move on fellow left-handed slugger Matt Adams. Other pending free agents could also be moved, though there’s no indication that superstar Bryce Harperwill be among them or that the team will move controllable assets.

It’s certainly also an interesting strike from the Cubs’ perspective. Murphy is as polished a hitter as any in baseball, as the Chicago organization well knows from its memorable postseason encounters with him in recent seasons. He has bounced back from a slow start to the year, turning in quality results over the past six weeks.

The Dodgers have put a claim in for Harper. It doesn't necessarily mean anything, but it's something to keep an eye on.

Anybody have any news on who, if anyone, the Sox have put up on waivers? I'm guessing Pom is the only one they would try.

The majority of the team will be exposed to waivers this month...

He was pulled back.

Why couldn't we get a guy like Murphy? That would have done wonders for our lineup.

Casue we have a better record and have last choices only.

The fact that almost everyone gets put on waivers in August isn't very interesting. :)

But some of the talent that gets moved in August can be surprising, like Murphy and Adams.

And of course our Punto trade with the Dodgers occurred in August 2012.

Only for NL waived players (like Murphy). For players waived by AL teams, the Sox are 15th in the waiver queue...

I do agree that trade should in the future always be referred to by the marquee names only. But can you at least call it “ the Punto—Loney trade” from now on?

Yes, it's hard to believe how many people forget we acquired Loney, De la Rosa, Webster, Sands and DeJesus all in that deal. :D

(Obligatory mention of Miley and Holt spinoff trades...)

One of the Sox best trades of all time.

Thanks, Ben.

That Rubby hype train was going strong for a while there.

Not surprising, though I would have liked to see Harper go to the Dodgers.

They could then have the trifecta of punks. LOL
