How can we let an average at best outlet her like Leake look like cy young?

By not having Xander and Mookie. We had legit three guys in the lineup who are a threat (JD, Moreland and Beni).

Does anyone really buy this team right now as a contender? Too inconsistent. Likely will be in that wildcard play in game.

They just need to get hot at the right time.

Oh knock it off with your dismal bull crap. We are in the division with the one of the other three super duper teams that will make it to the post season, it's a sad luck story if you are a wussy, no need to bitch about it and the season isn't over.

We are a strong contender. Very strong. That's my view, and a few bad stretches doesn't change a thing.

With the Yanks in our division, maybe we will be a wild card team, but if we win 100 or so, there's no reason to hang our heads and get all pessimistic.

Mike Leake posted his seventh quality start in his last nine trips to the mound.

What an up and down career for Leake.

How about this Babe Ruth OPS 1.164 and was 94-46 with a 2.28 ERA as a Pitcher. And 3-0 with a 0.87 era in World Series games.

He didn't face many 100 mph pitchers, rhe slider or 5 inning starters

Or the equipment these days including balls and Ballparks made for HRS. Talent is talent. Philosophy too has changed, there was a time when 100 K's a year was considered not good at all, now its OK to swing for the fences, and K all you want. I bet Ruth would have loved it now.

Especially without the "last seen fair" rule and the addition of foul poles.

Of course, he would no longer be credited for home runs on what would now be ground rule doubles...

What an up and down career for Leake.

Mike Leake has not quite reached the heights of an up-and-down Red Sox starter who stands seven inches taller:

ML DOB 12-12-87, 254 G, 249 GS, 1547 IP, 3.99 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 99 ERA+, 16.0 fWAR, 12.2 bWAR

RP DOB 12-27-88, 294 G, 290 GS, 1771 IP, 4.21 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 102 ERA+, 24.7 fWAR, 18.0 bWAR

Of course the second pitcher is Rick Porcello.

Other than Porcello's Cy Young season, he's been pretty consistent.

Most notably, his IP'ed have been over 162 every season and between 170 and 205 every season but 2.

His ERA has been between 3.96 to 4.92 in 7 of his 10 seasons and between 3.15 and 3.44 the other 3. His ERA- has been between 87 and 118 in 8 of his 10 seasons with his Cy Young and this season being the only two outside that range.

One could argue that Porcello just got better. After his 87 ERA- his rookie year, 3 of his best 4 ERA- seasons have been in his last 3 seasons (72, 102, 80). He was at 89 in 2014. So, after his rookie year, 4 of his best 5 ERA- seasons came after 2013. 4 of his worst 5 came before 2014.

He's not as up and down as some seem to think he is.

Leak's numbers don't look as inconsistent as I thought it was. His IP'd has been fairly consistent (168-214 every year after his rookie season).

His ERA and ERA- have yo-yo'd a little bit but not to a major extreme.

Starting in 2011:

ERA-

100

114

88

100

96

115

93

103

It's a pretty tight range, but every year it goes up-down-up...

Given the amount of time Mookie has been out, JDM going through a rough patch (hitting below .265 for the last 30 games), the only player above .300 being Beni, the next closest guys being in the .260's, Pedey out, Hanley gone, terrible D at 3rd, JBJ & Vaz being a black hole at. The bottom of the lineup, Devers being exposed. With major holes in his swing, Mooreland cooling off big time, up & down starters, and the offense struggling, it's frankly pretty amazing that we are still winning.

I have to believe that our boys start to heat back up soon on offense. I think our pitching stays relatively speaking strong. Our BP stays relatively good. Even JBJ finds his stick & hits somewhere near his norm, around .255 - .265 (God willing he even has that 1 month per year hot streak), Devers settles down & stops hacking away at flying high cheese, our catchers start to heat up on 0, JDM & Mookie heat back up, Bogie hits more for avg. As he is more than capable of, but keeps his launch angle going as well, Beni continues his BREAK OUT ALL-STAR YEAR, Mooreland picks up on a power surge, & the Sox go on a bit of a run.

We have a legit shot at finishing on top of our division.

If the Sox make no moves at the deadline, and we go 1 & done in a Wild-Card elimination game, the s*** will most definitely hit the fan. I'm not sure DD is willing to take that risk? I think he makes some interesting moves to make this team better. I think there is a small chance that he puts together a package deal to find a R hand bat with power.... Outside chance he puts together something for Machado (5% chance). Not at all likely, but he simply must add a power RH bat.

It's hopefully going to be a dog fight down to the final week with the Yankees. I think the 60% beat us out for top of the division, but we still win the 1 off, and eventually meet the Yankees in the ALCS. It's an epic series. One for the ages! Win or lose in game 7, it will be one to remember for our lifetime. Winning will be fantastic, but even in the event of yet another heartbreaker, it will be a series worthy of these two baseball GIANTS! A series that any true Sox fan will love.
