I think the shift more than any other reason has caused strike outs to escalate.

Yep, and caused home runs to escalate as well.

Why?

Before the shift became so prevalent, many batters with 2 strikes would cut down their swing and just make contact. With the shift in play those same batters are still trying to smash the ball over the shift.

Okay all you arm chair managers. Do you send Porcello out for the 8th? He’s at 98 pitches.

If not, who are you bringing in?

Call it ahead of time.

I do bring him back because it’s been an easy 98 pitches since the second inning, and I like to see a guy finish what he started.

Its 7-0. I say rest him, don't really matter who they bring in. Johnson or Velazquez I guess due to score.

I'd take him out at 7-0. Maybe not at 5-0.

Velazquez just ruined a perfectly nice box score.

It was all Swihart's fault.

Had Leon stayed in the game, we'd have had a 1 hitter.

Little guys like Betts and Beni can hit the ball hard.

Betts looks like he is getting back in the groove. Having been out for so long, he did need to get his stroke back and today it was evident that he got his stroke and confidence back.

Bogey, too.

He's up to about .850 again.

Betts, Bogey, Beni and JD might be all we need on offense.

I hope other can up their game, but we have as solid a 4 as anyone else.

Hitting doesn't mean much to me today, sorry. This was Porcello day, period. The hitting needs to do a whole lot more to persuade me it's back.

moonslav is right about the big four--Betts, Bogie, Beni, and JD--however. They are real

JBJs bad luck at this point is truly remarkable. I don't think I've ever seen a guy actually hitting the ball so hard right at people.

For the month of June, JBJ has the highest hard hit ball rate:

Red Sox Stats

Hard Hit Rate in June

1 66.7% Jackie Bradley

2 65.9% Christian Yelich

3 62.0% Justin Upton

5 60.0% Aaron Judge

He really has been a victim of some bad luck.

Now that was a shut down inning.

Porcello was awesome today.

That is what you call an ace performance.
