Tampa qualifies as a buyer by this logic, but they have already done some selling, trading Colome and Span...

So, that makes 12 teams out and 2 on the bubble as of right now. That's about half the teams as sellers.

Guardians got two relief pictures and Andrew Miller may be back too... makes them much stronger. And worse, we have to play them about 6-7 more times, plus 10-11 with the Yanks, plus a bunch with Houston...

Hold onto your hats... hard to see we run away with this.

Pom is simply not, & never will be a very athletic guy. Can he 'pitch?' Yes! Can he be highly effective pitching in the MLB? Sure. Still, if his mechanics are off just a little, as they too often are, he is below avg.

For your avg. Joe, the guy is just a bit soft. He's NOT an athlete with the raw strength to hurl. He never will be. If he's not 100%, mechanics 100%, & able to ramp it up & bring at least some soft cheese, good MLB players are going deep dish pizza on his squidgy pizza arss.

Crazy! The deepest dish mlb SP lineup is going THIN crust!

Can this Sox SP lineup possibly keep winning without Pom, E-Rod, ...... ? It's gonna be fun finding out! :)

Pom has 2 pitches. Cannot be a SP with 2 pitches. Kaat can suck a bag of D’s about his mechanics. Mechanics has 0 to do with the fact he is a 2 pitch pitcher (and always has been).

Four years and twelve days ago, the trade of 2 months of Andrew Miller netted the Sox 7 MLB seasons of Eduardo Rodriguez.

Thanks Ben!

If the Sox didn't nab Pearce, Jose Martinez would have been a platoon bench bat to grab. You don't want him playing the field though.

That and the fact that his velocity is down. I am guessing that his injury suffered in ST is worse than we are being told.

No one is running away with the division.

That said, I'd rather be in the position that we are in than in the Yankees' position.

Probably his second-best move, after signing Koji.

To me, these were Ben's best moves:

1. The Dodger dump (perhaps a top 5 Sox trade of all time)

2. Signing Koji

3. Trading 2 months of Miller for 7 MLB seasons of ERod

4. Signing Napoli (the first time)

5. Trading Jed Lowrie & Kyle Weiland for Mark Melancon

6. Trading Matt Albers & Podsednik for Craig Breslow

6. Signed Cody Ross to a 1 year deal

7. Trading Peavy for Hembree and E Escobar

8. Trading Cespedes for Porcello & extending him

9. Luis Ortega for Burke Badenhop

10. Signed Rich Hill to a minor league deal

11. Cash for Mike Carp

12. Trading Mike Aviles for John Farrell

13. Signing Scott Atchison to a mnor league deal

Honorable/semi honorable mention:

Signings:

Victorino, S Drew (the first time), J Gomes, M Scutaro, Dempster, David Ross,

Trades:

Cash for Scott Podsednik, Bowden for Marlon Byrd, Iggy & Montas for Peavy, Mortenson for Q Berry

How about draftings and international signings?

Absolutely !!! +100

Pom has proved he can be very effective as a two pitch SP'er.

He's hit a rough stretch that may be affected by an injury.

Sure, it would help if he had a 3rd effective pitch, but he may not need one, if he can just regain what he had the first half of 2016 and all of 2017.

Leon? He’s had his moments & solid enough backup w/ good defense.

Yes, he should at least be on the honorable mention list.

I could see the Mets hiring him.

Who was the poster who claimed Ben was a bum based on the fact that nobody wanted him as their next GM?

It was a good list you had there. Was hard pressed to find another name.

And that is why I could see the Mets hiring him, but he has to work for minimum wage and he will have to agree to join Amway. And he will have to finish last with a much smaller payroll than he had in Boston. Edited by a700hitter

Some decent moves on the list, right.

Some seem to forget all the good ones.

I have been following James Shields’ season. He is with a pathetic team that is horrible defensively and they play in a bandbox. He has put up a high number of quality starts, but the really notable thing about his season thus far is that he has avoided what has been his downfall throughout his career — the Home Run ball. I would think that he should be an inexpensive acquisition. If Pom and Wright continue to falter Shields would be a good alternative.
Shields with anothe good outing tonight:

103 PC, 7 INN, 7 HA, BBI, 5 K, ER, QS

I argued that his spending on Hanley, Sandoval, and Castillo would undermine his chances of obtaining a GM position. I stand by that argument. He may get some consideration but at the end of the day owners will have a hard time overlooking those three costly decisions. Trading for and taking on the contract of A.Craig isn't going to help, either.

Jonathan Schoop is a free agent after next season. The Orioles are in full blown rebuild mode. We can be pretty certain that Schoop will not be playing for the Orioles beyond next season. Schoop is also having a down year this season and that could possibly lower his trade value. Just thinking out loud here......

Maybe a package deal, Jonathan and Zach for Chavis and a prospect pitcher?

???

If this was Ben's 5th best move it doesn't speak very well for him. Melancon had a -0.2 fWAR in a Red Sox uniform, then was traded to Pittsburgh for Hanrahan and had 3 excellent seasons for Pittsburgh.

I also want to take exception to one of the "Trades", only because my silence could be construed as agreeing with it. I still don't.

Do you hate that 2013 trade worse than the Bagwell trade?

Do you hate that 2013 trade worse than the Bagwell trade?

I'm going to waffle on that question. Things tend to get judged on hindsight.

I believe the only reason the Bagwell trade is viewed as being horrible is because the Sox didn't win the WS that year. If Anderson had pitched well and the Sox had ended up being WSC the Bagwell trade would be seen as being a necessary part of the championship - and worth it.

OTOH, the reason "that other" trade is looked upon as being as good one is because the Sox won the WS that year. IMO if the Sox hadn't worn the WS that year more people would still be bemoaning the fact that that was the trade that necessitated acquiring Sandoval because the left side of the IF would have been set for years.

Interesting (to me, anyway) is the fact that Iggy's crucial error helped to propel the Sox into the WS. Had that trade not been made it's entirely possible that the 2013 WSC wouldn't have happened. But that's totally unforeseeable in terms of the whether the trade was a good one.

Besides the drafts... The Dogder Dump was brilliant. I never thought Signing Napoli was going to be that much of a drop-off at 1B for that ‘13 season and he kept plugging the holes with gamers like Nap, Vic, & Gomes. Most considered these moves a bit weak at the time, but these moves coupled with our core players at the time were just what the doctor ordered.

Later, some say Ben hoarded prospects and was afraid to make moves. But the timing has to be right to do that in my opinion. For example, we could have easily have Margot roaming our OF instead of Betts right now... if you think about it. And that’s nothing against Margot, but you get my point. It’s nice to know what you have first. For all the bad moves Ben, justifiably I might add, gets the blame, clearly there were even more opportunities to make even more bad moves under him. Anyone can choose a certain narrative and keep painting away at it, but to get a clearer more honest picture one needs to be a little more objective. Most teams could do worse than Ben Cherington.. and they usually do.
