You should look at Joakim Soria, he could be an interesting option

https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/soriajo01.shtml

Joakim Soria could be a viable option if the Red Sox can afford the residual of his 2018 salary of $9 million (plus performance bonuses). With a $10 million mutual option for 2019, Soria could be a candidate to replace closer Craig Kimbrel next year.

With a potentially expiring contract, Soria should cost less in trade than Brad Hand or Blake Treinen.

Yeah ....ill take Machado .

What is the point?

1. Machado puts us over the limit, so right there tells you it's not going to happen.

2. Devers potential is too much to give up for a great rental.

3. Yes, Machado would be THE PERFECT rental. Good D, great bat. I would BUY HIM on rental for a few months, BUST the cap, & GLADLY spend the money for an almost guaranteed WS run. If you'Re talking about a couple low level guys from the farm???? BUT, I simply wouldn't want to give up this much for a couple month rental.

4. Now.... if somebody could guarantee that we were going to sign Machado long term in FA, move Bogie to 3rd, and make Machado our SS, then I'd be all in. Of coyrse, this would be an impossible guarantee. The kid is going to get A HUGE CONTRACT, and the Sox will not overpay on a situation we already have covered. Suddenly.... or not so suddenly, the Sox have a gaping hole at 2nd.

Personally, I'd like to see Tzu-Wei Lin get some playing time before even contemplating trading for a second baseman...he's been hitting well in Pawtucket and would be an instant upgrade over Nunez defensively.

I'm not saying JBJ is going to have a hot streak, but it only takes a few days or weeks to add over 100 points to an OPS.

JBJ in 2017

.537 May 14

.644 May 25

.765 June 1

.850 June 25

Yes, he has more PAs at this point, so the OPS does not go up or down as quickly, but I still think it's possible JBJ ends up over .700.

2016

.586 April 23

.805 May 3

.906 May 11

1.001 May 14

The guy went 15 for 25 from May 8th to May 13th.

One stretch like that soon, and JBJ's numbers would not be an issue.

2015

.426 August 8 (24th game)

.559 August 9

.658 August 14

.840 August 15

.951 September 4th (46th game)

1.016 Sept 7

He had mini streaks of 13 for 17 with 3 HRs and 6 2B+3Bs and 15 for 26 with 2 HRs and 6 2b+3Bs.

Three years in a row, JBJ has had some red hot (but short) streaks. He looked pretty bad most of the other time.

I'm not sure this year will be any different.

Exactly. There is no need to make a move for a 2B right now, with over a month still to go before the deadline. Holt has been serviceable. Lin deserves a shot. Pedroia just may come back and be able to contribute a fair amount.

Getting a 2B might end up not being a need.

MLB trade rumors saying we are trading for the equivalent of Darren Bragg and Way back Wasdin .Not a chance we go far with standing pat like that .

They say we're looking for a right-handed bat and a reliever. It makes sense. And yes, there's a chance we go far.

Yep..I've always liked Lin. Give the kid a shot and hopefully Pedroia will return for the final stretch.

To land Darren Bragg (who hit lefthanded) the Red Sox gave up Jamie Moyer, who produced more WAR for his new team than any player exchanged between the Sox and the Seattle Mariners in 1996-97 (including Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe).

Less than two months after the Bragg trade, the Mariners traded David Ortiz to the Minnesota Twins for Dave Hollins.

Ouch.:o

Just a tough position to be in having no idea when or if Pedey comes back with any ability. At this point not getting a second baseman, or getting one, is just rolling the dice. As Mr. Eastwood was known to say "Do you feel lucky punk?"

And in 1986, the Mariners traded us Dave Henderson, who almost earned a Papi-like place in Red Sox history that postseason.

Very true.

I think the Sox will have a little better idea in 3-4 more weeks though.

The Red Sox reportedly have been in trade discussions with the Oakland Athletics:

Scroll down.

... and have asked about A's outfielder Mark Canha.

He's killing lefties this year (.969), but he has reverse splits over his career:

.739 vs RHPs

.680 vs LHPs

I'd say, no going by the stats only.

Who kills lefties and plays on a team that is or will likely be out of it by the deadline?

2017-2018 OPS vs LHPs

1.015 Beltre

.993 H Renfroe

.990 J Abreu

.979 E Suarez

.977 R Chirinos

.976 Avisail Garcia

.973 N Castellanos

.970 Donaldson

.928 B Dozier

.909 Merrifield

.904 A Duvall

.895 J Smoak

.895 J McCann

.894 K Morales

.877 T d;Arnaud

.871 J Soler

.871 J Schoop

.853 M Sano

.852 Asdrubal Cabrera

I'm not saying all of these guys are available, or that I want every player on this list, but hitting lefties is a big need area and some of these guys play OF, 2B and C (or can DH).

Wonder if Cora thinks he should keep players out with the sniffles. I come from a time when guys stayed in the lineup if they were in any shape at all to play. Cora's approach is a new way for me and I question it. Tingles, sniffles and boo boos are resulting in weaker teams on the field. When it gets down to crunch time in Sept., will the loss of a game here or there be what keeps us in the wild card? Maybe Cora's way will give us a healthier team, just a different approach than I would use. I wonder how the players feel about it?

I feel pretty much the same way you do. There have been some lineups put on the field that truly do not look particularly strong. Rest of course is necessary but how much, how often , and scheduled days off are things that are ok to question. I think that Cora is a good young manager but that doesn't mean that he his exempt from questioning whether in his first year or not.

Jose Abreu seems to be the guy who always pops up for us doesn't he ? just go get the guy already .The guy may be the missing piece to a championship .

White Sox are building a very strong team for the future, they will want good Prospects for Abreu. Sox don't have enough for him. White Sox can afford to be patient on him.

They have grabbed some of the Best Minor League Prospects from the Cubs, Red Sox, and Nationals. If things work out that team could be a force as early as next year. Here's just one promotion this year. I'm starting to admire their GM.

Theo Traded away 3 of his Top 5 Prospects, and they still have a pretty strong Farm. That's the difference of Ben and DD.

If the White Sox promote Koppech, they will have rebuilt a whole starting staff and young staff through Trades and the Draft.

Next year could be Rodon, Giolito, Lopez, and Koppech. With Dylan Cease a couple of years away. Might be some growing pains, but the talent is there.

Kopech got off to a good start this year but has been struggling badly of late, issuing a crazy number of walks. Last 9 starts - 40.1 IP, 6.69 ERA, 37 BB
