I would not trade away Kimbrel unless it upgrades the team as a whole. That means that any weakening in the BP would have to be more than offset by an upgrade elsewhere.

The only problem with that is a weak bullpen in the playoffs is an early ticket out.

That is what playoff baseball has become. It used to be that an ace would hand the ball to the closer in the playoffs. Now, an ace can hand the ball to a cadre of hard throwing relievers after 5 innings and he did well. The Royals really showed that the formula can work. The Yankees showed it last year as well. Heck, we won a play in game where our ace got 2 outs!

Or.... Why not trade Kimbrel?

Imagine what we could get for him? Maybe a really good closer? Or a DH? Maybe a good LF'r?

What the hell? Why not? Who cares about a playoff run?

Exactly.

Occasionally, a bullpen will show up in the playoffs and pitch beyond what they've shown in the regular season.

But, that doesn't happen often.

I would not want to go into the playoffs with only Kelly, Barnes and Hembree.

So KC relief pitcher Herrera went yesterday and apparently the Sox just had nothing to offer. "News" is that talks between the Sox and Orioles have broken down also over the Sox really having nothing to offer. I guess there is some musing over Britton and Machado for Devers. Thats not going to happen.

The Sox pulling off something meaningful is looking less like a miraculous job by DD and more like a work of hypnosis by DD. DD could probably get Britton by himself MAYBE.

Your guys did exactly that last night after Gray left, I think with 2 on, neither of whom scored. Chapman almost blew it in the 9th, but Judge saved him.

How about Kimbrel, Workman, Velazquez and maybe rehabbed Thornburg and/or Pom.

2018 Red Sox Pitching

Starters: 3.62 ERA

1.203 WHIP

.673 OPS against

Relievers: 3.03 ERA

1.195 WHIP

.648 OPS against

Yanks

Starters 3.76

1.176 WHIP

.670 OPS against

Relievers 2.87

1.116 WHIP

.618 OPS against

Astros

Starters 2.97

1.048 WHIP

.623 OPS against

Relievers 2.75

1.044 WHIP

.615 OPS against

Pretty close between all 3 teams with the 'Stros looking best, so far.

That's a little better, but I'm not a fan of trading any of the Sox top four relievers, while they are still in contention.

Punching a hole in the bullpen to get a bat is not smart, IMO.

Cora and DD need to get enough of a look at Thornburg pitching against MLB hitters before the trade deadline. Probably means he needs to get up here in the next couple weeks worst case.

I’ve seen Thornburg pitch to minor leaguers and it was not pretty. I can not imagine the results improving against major leaguers.

And ...... for the 4th time i'll repeat, "I was being facetious."

Clear enough?

I'm not for trading any bull pen help, unless it is for an upgrade.

The only real trade chip I think the Sox might have is Pom, and it would take a lot to happen in the next 6 weeks for his value to come up.

The main thing about trading Pom would be the money freed up for another trade for a salary dump sort of player.

Pom is under an $8.5M contract and trading him at the deadline would free up almost $3M for us to add elsewhere.

I just don't see us trading for anything significant, but last year, we did get Nunez and Reed without giving up too much.

I'm not convinced that it would necessarily be a weak BP. Weaker without Kimbrel, yes. But I think it could still be very good.

If it's a net overall improvement, I think you make the move.

Of all people, Dave D. is the last one who would do this. One of the big knocks on his Detroit years and the lack of playoff success was his bullpens.

Well Pom would be a good example of DD hypnotizing somebody. It is going to be hard to make the case that Pom is sound physically when the whole league saw him throw his first 92mph FB in weeks and immediately retire to the DL after that stint. No matter how he pitches if he pitches against ML teams again this year nobody is going to let DD forget that...unless DD is a hypnotist.

LOL Notin!!! Stop that!!!

Maybe I can change it up after all those years ending my part with 3 periods. I can try ending each one with 3 semi-colons for a while;;;
